Laphroaig won’t eat through my stomach lining. 25 years north of the border and longer drinking Islay malts has made me immune.

What’s the appropriate drink for watching this? Perhaps the Arbroath Kiss could make an appearance. If I remember correctly, there was an alternative version of 1 part whisky, 1 part Irn Bru with deep fried tablet sprinkled on top. For those not familiar with it, tablet is something like a...

Also, 550W will limit your ability to upgrade in the future, especially with the CV series which is designed for office computers. The 128GB SSD is pretty pointless- too small and much slower than the slowest M.2 drive. If you are now needing WiFi, select a motherboard with it included or the...

Whisky in a longer drink - sacrilege!! Proper whisky needs only a dash of water and only then if it is cask strength. Alternatively, you could try an Arbroath Kiss

PCSPECIALIST New to custom builds - all advice very welcome

The 3080 would be wasted on a 1440p monitor. You can’t really future proof GPUs. By the time you could use the extra performance, a new range of graphics cards will likely be here with more power for lower equivalent cost. It is always best to match the graphics card to the monitor.

    PCSPECIALIST New desktop spec advice

Just depends how tight the budget is. We wouldn’t want to be taking food off the table. I went for a 5900x myself.

The graphics card doesn’t affect the motherboard recommendation. With a 5800x we usually spec a TUF X570, with a ROG STRIX X570 for the 5900x. The latter won’t be a problem with the 5800x, but isn’t essential.

You can get closer to the £2k budget by dropping back to the 5800x, which should still perform well for your uses. Case CORSAIR iCUE 465X RGB GAMING CASE Processor (CPU) AMD Ryzen 7 5800X Eight Core CPU (3.8GHz-4.7GHz/36MB CACHE/AM4) Motherboard ASUS® TUF X570-PLUS GAMING WIFI (USB 3.2 Gen 2...

PCSPECIALIST First Gaming/Streaming PC in a while.

Doesn’t really need a 3080 if aiming for 1440p (ASUS 3070 is much cheaper and 3060Ti cheaper still) and could benefit from a ROG STRIX 570 with the 5900x.

The 500GB drive is super fast and is for your OS and programmes. Your games go on the larger drive. if you need to reinstall,Windows, you don’t need to download all your games. Also, using 2 disks is faster.

I don’t think the shorts wearing philosophy would work well in Aberdeenshire if you value your legs. A better philosophy is to wear shorts in months with no vowels. A few years ago we took my mum to Balmoral (no my name is not Charles, Anne, Andrew or Edward). We were told that August is the...

PCSPECIALIST Can this be better for the price, or cheaper in any areas?

This build saves you £600 and is better in several areas. A 5900x will be better for gaming. A 3070 is a good match for 1440p - you could even drop to a 3060Ti. I have changed the storage and cooling, upped the PSU, added a WIFi card and Silver warranty. Case COOLERMASTER MASTERBOX TD500 MESH...
