New desktop spec advice

This is my first custom built pc. I currently have a Dell desktop that has survived 11 years until my graphics card failed. I looked at Dell and I really was not impressed with whats on offer, and then I found this site!

This is a baseline spec - very open to modifications/ advice....

Price range: up to £2000 for the PC although clearly if I can get it for less than thats a bonus...I will allow up to another £200 max for a monitor

Purpose.....I do limited if any gaming! My son is a gamer, but he has his own high end laptop for that! However I do work with high resolution images, photoshop.....and I often have 50+tabs open on chrome at a time, with microsoft office running in the background. My current PC with 16GB RAM certainly struggles now.....

I want to have it future proofed...I realise my current PC has lasted an exceptionally long time, but ideally I want at least 6-7 years from it if possible.

I am very mindful of both heat and dust...I thought some case has dust filters but maybe I am wrong with that one......

Before I give my spec a couple of questions:
- when I configured this model I could only find series 10 Intel chip - why is that? Would not the more modern 11 series be better?
- RAM - is that the best arrangement....
- hard drives - is it best these days to stick to SSD? Presumably I would run windows off the smaller drive and keep everything else on the larger one? Or is there a better way to do that?
- power supply - when I tried to configure it I got conflicting messages - is that the best option I have chosen? IT said it was too powerful but then it also said I had to chose an Rmx supply...not sure what that means tbh

Here is the build and really appreciate your advice as I fine tune things.......

Thank you for your v helpful advice - so much I was unaware of - embarrassing! Here is a better informed attempt thats getting close to what I want....but a little over budget now. What do you think bearing in mind my intro thread regarding use - any obvious fat that can be trimmed off to bring it down a little in price? I would not want to sacrifice quality or longevity significantly....
Thank you

I reckon we can help you improve this just a little bit to get the most value for money. It looks like a really good start.

First, I'd change that monitor, and get something either like the AOC 24G2U (1080p 144Hz gaming monitor) or, if you're not going to be doing any gaming, the AOC Q2781PQ, which is 27 inch, 1440p, 60Hz, IPS. Terrible for gaming, but for photo editing probably much better. That's around £215. Or, if we're pushing the budget, the Gigabyte M27Q, which is overkill in terms of frame rate, but is apparently a very good photo editing monitor.

Then I'd modify your build like this:

Case
CORSAIR iCUE 465X RGB GAMING CASE
Processor (CPU)
AMD Ryzen 9 5900X 12 Core CPU (3.7GHz-4.8GHz/70MB CACHE/AM4)
Motherboard
ASUS® ROG STRIX X570-F GAMING (USB 3.2 Gen 2, PCIe 4.0) - ARGB Ready!
Memory (RAM)
32GB Corsair VENGEANCE DDR4 3200MHz (2 x 16GB) - I doubt you need 64GB, but you definitely want 3200MHz - you can always add 32GB more if you need to
Graphics Card

6GB ASUS DUAL GEFORCE RTX 2060 - HDMI, DP, DVI - for some reason the cheapest 2060
1st Storage Drive

3TB SATA-III 3.5" HDD, 6GB/s, 7200RPM, 64MB CACHE - I doubt you really want 6TB of slow hard drives, do you?
1st M.2 SSD Drive

500GB SEAGATE FIRECUDA 530 GEN 4 PCIe NVMe (up to 7000MB/R, 3000MB/W) - ultra-fast boot drive
1st M.2 SSD Drive

2TB INTEL® 670p M.2 NVMe PCIe SSD (up to 3500MB/sR | 2700MB/sW) - SSD for your current projects
Power Supply

CORSAIR 850W RMx SERIES™ MODULAR 80 PLUS® GOLD, ULTRA QUIET
Power Cable
1 x 1 Metre UK Power Cable (Kettle Lead)
Processor Cooling
Corsair H100i RGB PRO XT Hydro Series High Performance CPU Cooler
Thermal Paste
STANDARD THERMAL PASTE FOR SUFFICIENT COOLING
Sound Card
ONBOARD 6 CHANNEL (5.1) HIGH DEF AUDIO (AS STANDARD)
Network Card
10/100/1000 GIGABIT LAN PORT
Wireless Network Card
WIRELESS INTEL® Wi-Fi 6 AX200 2,400Mbps/5GHz, 300Mbps/2.4GHz PCI-E CARD + BT 5.0
USB/Thunderbolt Options
MIN. 2 x USB 3.0 & 2 x USB 2.0 PORTS @ BACK PANEL + MIN. 2 FRONT PORTS - you already have loads of USB ports (10); you don't need any more, surely?

Absolutely, though when the price difference is just £200, I'd be very much inclined towards the 12-core 5900X build.

Just depends how tight the budget is. We wouldn’t want to be taking food off the table. I went for a 5900x myself.

Firstly - thank you so much for the great advice as I narrow this spec down. I feel I am almost there.....I really appreciate it!

- I think I will push it out slightly to the 5900 - its more than I planned but I think I will definitely notice the benefit longer term....
- good advice re the drives.
- USB ports - how do you know there are 10 already? I am obviously missing where it says that somewhere? 10 would definitely be enough lol!
- I will definitely look closer at those monitor suggestions....
- is there anything else I am obviously missing?
Thank you......
