Optimus V Fan Noise

Hi Guys,

I am seriously thinking about buying the Optimus V but after I stumbled across this thread and (as you would expect) I have concerns about the performance of the 'jet engine' of a fan lol....I would not mind if it was 90-100% if i was playing games but not when the system is idle, so my question to you lovely people is if you knew about the 'jet engine' would you buy one? also whats the screen like?

Many thanks

I too was concerned after viewing this thread, but still went ahead and bought one, as I was confident if there were any problems, then fixes would be made either by PCS or Clevo. Just received my laptop 2 days ago, and I must say I'm extremely happy, the fan issue seems to be worse for some people than others. I think I must have been one of the lucky ones, as I can have my laptop on for hours and not hear a single sound. There has been a few times the fan has randomly kicked in at full pelt, and yes its VERY noticeable and I sympathise for those people who have got it worse, as I'v heard what it's like and it would definitely drive me mad hearing it constantly.
As for the screen... No complaints at all from me, I think its excellent. Takes a little getting used to the 1920x1080 resolution if you've been using laptops with 1366x768 before; everything is smaller, but looks very clear. And I know once I start trying out some games, it will look brilliant.

Thanks for coming back to me paigey :)

Ok cool so it seems to be a random event? I am sure not every user has this problem as there would most likely be an uproar! What's it like for everyday use? I was either going to go for this, MSI G60 or Alienware 14 (pretty lights) lol....but this is cheaper and I can build a high spec, only absence is the DVD/Blu Ray drive but I am not bothered about that.

Thanks

Yeah, I guess it's just luck of the draw at the moment, my laptops been on since about 9am this morning, and don't remember hearing the fan even once, whereas other people are saying the fan goes off every 15minutes like crazy...

Can't really comment much on what it's like in everyday use, all I've been doing so far is copying files and installing programs / games on to it, but from what I've seen so far it's very quick and responsive... Hope to get a review going as soon as I start testing out some games on it :)

As price for performance goes, I'm fairly sure you won't get a better deal than what's offered here :)

only absence is the DVD/Blu Ray drive but I am not bothered about that.

Does this mean you're thinking about getting the 13.3inch model? If so, then all this issues with the fans shouldn't matter, as it's only been brought up as an issue with the 15.6" model

Yeah i'm pretty sure only the people who got the 'Pre-built' ones are having the issue did you manually choose the specs for yours?
Cause since the pre-assembled ones have been taken off no one has been having the issue, i guess i was just unlucky with going for that
hopefully Clevo get things sorted for me it's definately a great laptop as you say screen is amazing, runs beautifully, just the fan is the only thing that irritates me currently other than that i'd recommend ;p

Not sure why the Pre-Assembled ones are different, but maybe they're adding different fans in or something now, just a guess but everyone who has bought one since seems fine with it so i'd say it's safe to buy

Yeah i went from a 1366x768 myself and thought my god the screen is small, but got used to it VERY quickly, such beautiful resolution. :D

Mine was not a pre-built one. When I ordered I don't even think there was one. I chose all the parts using the configurator.

Ah just a guess, i'll have to say though mine had bedded in abit now, still pretty loud and comes on while idle but slightly more bearable
it just has it's completely random moments of sudden 100% and stays on it how is yours doing?

Yeah, it's improved over time. It comes on a lot less but still a few times randomly. It tends to stay on for a while after a game too. The temps usually return to normal after 5 minutes but the fan will stay on for another 30 or so.

Does the fan kick in with a cooler pad underneath? My Optimus V arrives on Monday and whilst fan noise isn't of major concern to me (yet) I would rather minimise the chances of it occurring than just let it drown out the TV and get grief from the missus.

Unfortunately mine does, i use cooling pad constantly and it still happens, however Pcspecialist are still trying to get the fix from Clevo, but clevo are taking a while
as soon as the fix is out the fan should be normal i hope!

Not for the fan though :(
The brightness fix has been out for ages already as i was offered it about 2 weeks ago
As for the bios i think it's just an upgrade, not for the fan yet >.<
If it is for the fan could you let me know?

I have the Optimus V currently on order. 5th working day in pre-production so a while yet till it'll be delivered :whistling:. Mine is the 17.3" version. Am I right in thinking that the fan noise problem is just with the 15.6" version or is it the 17.3" version too? I'm starting to get a little worried.

Ta, Matt

Judging by what Mooseh posted before, i think you should be fine as it's a different motherboard :)
It's only known with the 15.6" so far.

So I've got the Optimus V 15.6 inch and am having the problems which are mentioned in the thread, unchangeable brightness + fan noise. How do I get "offered" the fix? Would I just have to wait around? Do they e-mail you or send a cd to you by post?

You may need to request it directly from PCS.

Send an email to enquiries/webmail and let us know you need it.

I have to manually create the BIOS flash and driver package, so I'll probably be doing them in bulk over the weekend.

The BIOS update and brightness fix is for Windows 7 customers, the BIOS is a revised one but may not fix the fan issue, but the fan table as been slightly modified, with another update due to completely rectify the fans later.

So if you need both let me know, but if you're only on Windows 8, let me know so you don't get the backlight fix, if you're on Windows 8 it will make things worse.

Do you have an ETA on the full fan fix yet?
