Optimus V Fan Noise

My contact with PCSpecialist has been great. I contacted them via the online chat while my Laptop was in pre-production to ask for some things. I also emailed them about the BIOS update and all the responses were from the same person. I can also tell you that I did a bit of looking around before purchasing and PCS is the only one I trusted. I also knew people, and had seen their laptops, who purchased from PCS. I can't tell you which company to go for but I can ensure you that PCS do take you seriously. Sounds like baram has had a bit of bad luck.
As for the fan, yeah, it can be a bit loud but I'd rather have a laptop that can cool itself down quick and keep temps low. The lower the temps the more performance you will get out of turbo boost and whatnot.

To be fair my fan has settled down a lot.

Bedded in more maybe.

It can be loud when gaming but its not as bad as say an Alienware m14x

Yeah, mine has settled down a bit too. Its just every now and then it still comes on full when in light use. Apart from that it only comes on while gaming.

Received an email from them today, faulty part has been shipped and also an apology for no instructions being sent with the BIOS update. Fair enough, so will see how i get on

As stated in my email Bararm, apologies that you did not receive a Top letter with instructions for the BIOS flash. I believe this has occurred as we have changed the structure on the Pen Drives. If anyone else does not receive the instruction sheet either PM me or email enquiries and we will forward it on for you.

No problem, appreciate mistakes happen. If it finally fixes the fan issue i will be very happy!

Thankfully my Optimus seems to be near silent apart from a 2 second cycle every hour of aircraft worthy fan noise. Might be because im set up in a cold living room at the minute.

That's how i'd want mine to be :p I only had temps of 45c and the fan was going crazy still hopefully the Bios will help out it's a great laptop!

Has anyone had success with the BIOS update yet? I'm still waiting for it to arrive.

That's what I'm waiting for, confirmation that the BIOS update works then I'm good to go. I feel a lot more confident now though that I have read what other posters have said.

Just a slight update. I used my V for the first time in a proper gaming session on Friday night. Its a good test, played Dayz, BF3 etc for about 7 hours and the fan noise was fine.

It was never random or loud. It got louder of course than idle but noise levels were actually quite reasonable to my ears. Much quieter than the m14x and not far from my old Asus N55SL (which only has a gt635m).

So, in summary for me, a bit random at the start but it seems to have bedded in well to an acceptable level :)

This is great news thanks :)

Is it possible, do you think, that Clevo are using a new design of fan in the Optimus V perhaps with a different type of bearing? That might explain why it needs to "bed in" and why its quite noisy at first.

Just thinking out loud again. :)

Reading through the start of this thread caused a lot of uncertainty, as I'm getting ready to order an Optimus V, but I'm glad things have gotten better for people and it's become less of an issue. Just to clarify, did the fan noise settle by itself after some time using the laptop? Or was the bios update necessary?

Still all the same model. Unless they got bored half way through the shipment and changed. :p

I'm turning the laptop off. It is absolutely infuriating. If this isn't fixed soon, i am returning the laptop to PCS as i consider it a bad enough flaw to warrant a return under distance selling regs
