My CPU is running at 800Mhz, 45 degrees (on battery) and the fan comes on full speed every couple of minutes. My wife is telling me to send the laptop back

I am not happy with the laptop i have to say, i honestly feel this is a flaw worthy of a return

As it stands, i am regretting buying a Clevo.

I contacted PcSpecialist and they're sending me an updated Bios for the fans i think to control them maybe you should send them a message too explaining the problem :)

Had my Optimus 5 for a few days and the fan really is loud. Its not quite hair-dryer loud, but its close. My cooling setting is already on passive!

Have you received the updated bios yet? I've sent a message to PcSpecialist, but not had a response yet.

I really wish it did have all these options in the BIOS available to change.

For reference guys mine has no fan problems and BIOS version is 4.6.5, 11/04/2013

Received the USB stick with the BIOS on it. No instructions on what to do. Just a readme file that tells you the very basics with no true step by step instructions (for example when the key boots, choose option 3) etc

Got version 1.09 on the BIOS now, will see how it goes.

Just can't understand why a company that prides itself on customer service can't seem to go the extra mile and get what i would consider the basics, correct.

Include a printed document with step by step instructions (you should assume your customer is a complete novice) on how to upgrade the BIOS

I'm an MCP/MCTS/MCITP and i didn't find it particularly easy to upgrade the BIOS.

When contacting their technical support I found their service exemplary. I don't work for PCS but I could assume it was either a human error or instructions are provided with the instruction manual that came with your laptop.

To be fair you're one of the first PCS customers to get the new Optimus V, a laptop that few people have any real experience of. PCS are dependant on Clevo for the BIOS (I doubt they modify them themselves). It seems that PCS have rushed to get the BIOS update to you and, in that rush, they may have cut a few corners and not sent you step-by-step instruction to update it. A quick phone call would have got you all the help you needed though.

I understand your frustration with the fan, but I agree with keynes, I have found their after sales service to be perfect. I am sure they are doing the very best they can to help you, especially since they probably don't know why this is happening either.

BTW. Did the BIOS update fix the fan problem?

:)

Not really had chance to use it this morning but ill post some feedback later. What exactly does the BIOS fix though? I'm not quite sure as the fan isn't mention in the revision notes

I've no idea, I don't work for PCS. It will be very useful to other Optimus V users to know whether the BIOS update sorts that fan issue though.

Thanks! :)

Well new BIOS fitted and unfortunately the fan is still coming on full pelt for no apparent reason.

OK I give up... how do you get the laptop to book on the BIOS update USB stick???

I finally managed to book to the blue bios screen by hammering on the F1, F2 and Del keys (don't know which one actually worked!), but I can't find boot options that allow USB booting. There is a EUFI boot or windows boot manager option - do I use one of these?

F2 to enter BIOS. Then on the exit tab choose a boot override at the bottom, this allows you to immediately boot into your chosen option. I've noticed my BIOS is updated, but other bit hasn't, so i wonder is that the issue.
You have to manually update the BIOS and EC yourself, its not an auto boot/auto install one.

My BIOS is on 1.00.07 and my KBC/EC firmware is 1.00.03 which i think is the same as before

Well, my experiences so far haven't been great (talking about email correspondence)

I emailed asking for a replacement part to be sent out as it was damaged, on the 20th, still have not received it and i suspect it's not been sent. Each time i email support, i receive a reply from a different person who is utterly oblivious to any previous correspondence and i have to explain the problem again. I emailed to ask for some more information on updating the EC as i don't think it has worked (as the fan is still ridiculously loud) and i received an email saying they will send me out a BIOS. One i have already received, which they should already know.

It's very frustrating to feel like you are getting nowhere fast and i don't have the luxury of ringing during the day as i am very busy at work. If there was some kind of call logging system in place, it would ensure that customers who call up, have their details logged and the next person to deal with the customer has all the details to hand. This is what my company does, every single phone call or action gets updated - it ensures nothing is missed.

I currently have a sound card driver that won't install, so i can't use the Sound Blaster Cinema software, a damaged back strip, and a fan that is causing my wife to throw me looks of "seriously?"

Oh dear, this is not good. I was on another site asking for help to buy a new laptop and after a few 'trials' the choice came down to this one, almost the same spec in fact. Now, having read this thread I'm not sure. Is the fan noise a deal-breaker ? And moreover the customer service ?
