Optimus V Fan Noise

I'm seriously wondering why the firmware I posted last week (EC 1.00.07) hasn't been acknowledged yet. I'm pretty sure it at least fixed some of the fan problems. Or has this firmware not been officially released by Clevo (I got it from my re-seller their website so I'm assuming it is official)?

But I was told that there was no firmware fix for this issue by support.

Should I email someone else apart from [email protected] ?

Hi there

Thank you for your email.

At the moment a BIOS flash for your chassis is not available, as soon as this is sent over to us by the manufacturer we will forward this onto you.

Thank you for your email.

It is definitely working for me and i notice the difference.I must admit I'm quite an advanced computer user so i had no problems flashing it,but i can understand that some people maybe uneasy about doing it.
I'm trying to get the updated hotkey drivers to turn my brightness down as i can't do that on windows 7.There was supposed to be an update, but all support keep going on about is the bios.Which i no longer need now,as the fan is fixed for me.

There is no Bios they are right, there is only a Firmware out and it's not official to their knowledge and that was posted on here and picked up by the Pcspecialist team to look at, they definately know it's on here you need to ask Jack he seems to know the most about all the problems regarding this thread, all other staff i ask have no clue to any of it, they just simply say "I do not know" as with Jack knows completely everything and will give you an answer and he seems most informed
ask for the Firmware that is on this forum thread that Jack is sending to people.
in other news i was told i'd be sent the firmware along with instructions first class on saturday, but i haven't got anything or heard anything since.

Hi mate.
when you say it is working for you do you mean the fan is behaving properly now ? Normally you would say ? Could you elaborate a bit more on this as I am on my way to buy an Optimus V and starting to be a bit concerned about this whole story of the fan.
Thanks in advance

I have acknowledged this and thanks to both of yours and bully's experience with it, it is my fallback option if when I buy this laptop, PCS have not got a fix themselves. I do however feel as surprised as you do about how few people have actually given it a go as I thought people who go for personal spec'd computers would be comfortable with things like installing their own hardware, software and flashing.

You do have a point, in effect I would say there is quite a bit of uncertainty about voiding the warranty on the laptop. I completely understand they want to play it safe. I am more concerned about the fact people are actually forced to come up with a solution for the problem themselves...it does not make any sense to me.
I am actually asking the owners of the Optimus V in this site, would you guys still buy the same laptop or given the fan issue, would you suggest something different ?

I had the same problem many people have here and it was driving me mental.I could hardly hear the tv in the background and the fan would come on at full speed just browsing the net!.

Since installing the mentioned firmware the hovercraft noises are non-existant.Obviously if i increase the cpu usage via video encoding or using my ps2 emulator, the fan does increase still, but that's normal and to be expected. The difference is it pretty much quietens down as soon as i finish, and i no longer have the random blasts i used to.

It has 100% made a difference to me and i flashed mine nearly a week ago.

I would still buy the Laptop, despite the fan sounding like a jet it's brilliant.

I would still buy it yes, as acffordyce said it's brilliant infact mine has gone pretty silent! the only that bothers me is the fan coming on while i'm idling, which is apparently fixed with the firmware :)

But if you get it and you're thinking "jesus christ that's loud" i thought that too at first but it did eventually go alot quieter itself after a few weeks or so of using it.

Also is it possible to help me get the firmware sorted so i can also confirm alongside bully that the fan can be sorted for everyone
I downloaded Rufus, did USB, added files on it, went to boot screen, tried to boot but not sure how this is the part i'm stuck on i can't find the directory.

Under the option 'create a bootable disk using' did you select msdos?.
That's what i did,i then formatted the usb and added the files in my computer.I then rebooted the laptop pressed 'f7' to select to boot from usb (before windows starts). An msdos (command prompt) screen popped up then i entered the name of the .bat file that's listed. It asked for the firmware so i typed the name of the firmware, and the .bat file took care of the rest.
To make sure it worked i rebooted and loaded the bios (f2), underneath where it says 'bios version',it says somehting along the lines of kbc/ec version. If it reads 1.00.07,you know it worked.

btw a quick tip,if you don't want to type the full name of the files in dos, type the first few letters then press tab.It makes things easier.

good luck!

Update: The firmware has done nothing to my laptop, i've checked it's fully working but the fan is still going on while idle at high speed.
And Pcspecialist are ignoring me on asking about the Bios fan fix, All hope has now flushed away - guess i gotta deal with it
only way i can get it to stop after gaming is by shutting the lid and making it go sleep then open it again, but as you can imagine this is frustrating is you're doing work.

I'll have to give this a try. I used to shut it down and leave it for a minute then start it up.

I think voiding the warranty certainly is an issue to delve into but this isn't a hacked bios that sparky has linked. It is from a re-seller who looks like they are one step ahead of PCS with a fix. I don't think we have been left to our own devices though, I don't think any decent company would supply a product that they know has these issues and not offer a fix I just think the fix is taking time. It sounds like a simple solution either ramp down the fans top speed or gradually increase speed but what a lot of people won't realise is although they say it is a simple bios option, it isn't. It requires revision of a hardware-software-hardware interface which is the temp sensor sending the system a message sending the fans a message. At the moment the sensors say "toasty" and the fans say "game on!" and no idea why it goes on when idle, but for clevo to give us 3 or 4 variable speeds they need to find the appropriate temps for each speed of both GPU and CPU to initiate and make sure the laptop is still safe so it isn't an easy job really and could require trial and error. And ultimately it can turn out that having variable speeds is ineffective because effective heat dissipation could require a minimum air flow under which it is almost irrelevant having a fan is irrelevant. I have gone much deeper into the problem but I am just thinking as an engineer but just wanted to give some idea as although it looks like nothing is happening, it is probably because this forum always so active it gives the perception that a lot is said and not much is done.

Taking a breather, onto your other question, I don't have this laptop yet but I am definitely buying it. Clevo have a nice laptop build. Thinking "bang for buck" this laptop is the best one I have seen and I have been looking for over 4 months. To get a similar spec from a named brand costs at least 200-300 more (MSI, Toshiba), and that excludes premium named brands which you can add 500-1000 (alienware, Razer) for the same spec.
Here is a point I made in another thread too, someone suggested getting a vortex iv le because of an extra fan, different chassis and option to upgrade gpu but the vortex iv le is tagged "extreme gaming" and the base gpu in that is 765m like the optimus v so that implies PCS/Clevo consider the 765m entry level extreme gaming making this laptop a steal. Also the fact that the optimus v has 2 HDD bays without sacrificing the optical is a massive bonus as is 3 ram slots. For people who don't really understand the significance of 2 HDD bays, the best setup is a boot ssd with the OS, and a mass storage hdd for drive 2 giving you speed and size. Also with msata caching available you can install an msata which can take your most common applications you use and cache them so they are also quick. It feels like a safe option for the next 3 to 5 years for gaming, 5+ for general laptop use and for a price mark in the 700-800 region it will be more cost effective than a basic highstreet laptop that doesnt cost much but doesnt last long either. Long story short the fan issue is fixable and far outweighed by the sheer impressiveness of this build for the price

Are you sure you are absolutely idling? It just seems your laptop is an exception to what other people have experienced on more than one occasion. Could you check your system tray and also can you upload a snippet of taskmanager with your active processes? I just have a funny feeling something is sitting in the background and preventing true idling and causing the fan to come on. I only say this because I use OpenVPN a lot and that alongside antivirus antispyware and other software like that will sit on in the background and use up power. Although it may not be by much if they decide it is time for a system scan or if you just have a lot of these services running it adds up.
