When I was staying in London, and if I wanted something within walking distance of the office, I was looking at £1000 per month for a room in a shared house (shared bathroom, shared lounge, shared garden, shared kitchen, no parking).

It ended up being cheaper to stay in a decent B&B close by, where I had an en-suite and a pub next door - and didn't have to deal with 'roomies'!

Did you know that in WWII Stoke-On-Trent was never bombed?

After the war they learned that Stoke-On-Trent was never bombed because when the Luftwaffe flew the photo reconnaissance missions they thought they already had bombed it.....
Its not changed a lot in 80 years...............

Can you still get fish and chips in newspaper over there?

FWIW you can't get (decent) fish and chips at all over here! Some years ago I came over to the UK to do a sailing presentation for the Cruising Association. All the presenters went out to a fairly fancy restaurant for dinner in the evening. I had fish and chips - to the amazement of all present. Why? Because you just don't get it here...

You can't even get decent fish & chips in some major cities (unless you want to pay £50 in some celebrity restaurant). When I was working in London, I had to drive about 7 miles to get a 'fair' fish supper...all the ones closer did frozen fish with fries in a polystyrene box.

Seaside fish & chip shops are the best...but our couple of local ones (Liverpool, not London) have been complaining about the cost increases and passing them onto customers...whilst giving bigger portions...so I don't know why they don't go back to the smaller portions and reduce the price?

We order 1 large fish and a portion of chips between 2 people (costs £9.50), and there's usually about 1KG of chips left over ;)
