1060 hasn't been announced yet afaik. The rumours at the end of April were saying it wouldn't be seen at Computex, which means it won't be around until 3rd quarter of the year at the earliest if that's right.

I'm personally not really too "blown-back" out of my seat by the comparison with the 980 ti on certain benchmarks with the founders edition card: it's simply an overclocked 980ti.
Also, it's not that great of a performance boost as they were boasting: "Better than 980 sli".

However, with manufacturers such as ASUS (Strix), MSI & EVGA going at it there might still be a chance of redemption even though this is the nr. 1 card that will be on the market.

I am optimistic that overclocked versions will provide a significant boost in performance. There should be more headroom for overclocking the GPU. 2 x GTX 1080 should be good for 4K.

But if there is so much headroom for safe overclocking then why isn't the default speeds higher. I'm sceptical that they either don't have as much headroom as Nvidia claim or there are a lot of binned chips being sold that couldn't sustain much higher than default clocks.

To make more money, to extent the life cycle of the GPU. Why show the full potential at the start? With aftermarket coolers or with a waterblock it should offer better performance

Show the full potential to really impress everyone and shock the competition. Why only put in 80% effort when you can give it a full 100%? They could have put in a higher default clock and charged an extra $50 for it.

Impressing everyone is not as profitable as letting customers speculate and there is no real competition at the moment.

The competition is expected in the very near future. What if AMD came out with something that topped this? Nvidia would then look like the weaker one.

Based on previous releases that didn't really happen and I am sure there are other expected releases from Nvidia like the 1080 ti or something else. We are speculating here though and I will wait until mid/end June to see whether or not performance is higher than what we have seen so far

Exactly right, the 1080ti will be extremely expensive, and is another leap forwards in price. From what we have seen, will it be worth an upgrade? If you have a 980ti or even a 980 at the moment there is no massive point in upgrading unless you are set on sli to hit that 60fps 4k target or the bragging rights involved. What AMD are doing this time is letting Nvidia have the top level/enthusiast market share at least for the moment until Vega and will be competing against them for volume sales in the sector where more cards (they hope) will be bought. I.e. the 960/r9 380 970/r9 390 range. I think they were counting on the fact that this 1080, although impressive, is not mind blowing in terms of an advancement, and many people will be forced to wait to see whether to upgrade and maybe wait long enough for the Vega flagships to come out where I believe there will be massive improvements. Not sure they are right to do so, but its an interesting tactic.

Fact is, the 970 was the card most people bought in terms of volume sales, and AMD are trying to being proactive rather than reactive this time. If they can come up with something that will rival the 1070/beat it in terms of price vs performance then they will be winning the volume battle. Its a fact through benchmarks that the r9 390 is a better card than the 970; albeit after driver improvements, although AMD still occasionally drop the ball temporarily like with the recent release of Doom; which was fixed pretty quickly (and AMDs OpenGL support has always been inferior), but they released this card too late. The battle had already been lost. This time they will intend to release a "970" beater earlier to grab this slice of the market. Its a wise strategy for them as they are well known to be struggling for sales. It will be wise though only if they can come up with a card that has a substantial gain in price/performance, as Im not too sure people are that interested in power efficiency at this level when they buy a gpu.

Personally I think if you really need a top level card, then there will be only one choice and thats the 1080ti, but for a max settings 1440p card or mid range price max settings 1080p card you would do well to wait and see AMDs coming offerings. Vega may well smash the top level too, they really have a chance this time; but again I think they will have released it too late; who knows when this will be out in 2017. As soon as enthusiasts see a top level performing card, they go out and buy it. They don't wait on what might be from the competition.

At least its getting more interesting this competition between them, its needed as if Nvidia only dictates the prices of these cards at any level you will be seeing rises. Personally, that's why even though I have no interest in the very top level cards, I hope AMD comes up with Vega sooner than later or a lot of people are going to be paying big prices for the benefit as there will be 0 competition at the top level. What I find slightly worrying is that although I think AMD has a big chance of bringing out the top performing card this time, (as I truly believe they have the better technology) they have chosen to "give up" in the initial battle, which is when the card can be brought out. We are used to direct battle over the top cards between the manufacturers and this will not be so much the case this time.

If anyone is really interested in this, you would do well to watch Adoredtv's videos on Youtube which is geek heaven for the ins and outs of the Pascal/Polaris release. Its really good stuff and some of the best info you will find on Nvidia/AMD. I have never donated to a youtube video but for this guy's research and work into this, I can see why people did. In fairness a few of the games it seems to blow the 980 ti out of the water in seem to be games that perform so terribly with SLI that a single 980ti beats SLI, or is barely outperformed by it :S

The 1080 seems to be about 20 to 25 fps ahead of the 980ti at 1440p. Now that I have an up to 100 Hz monitor, I find it starts to look really good at 70fps and above. Currently I dip into the 50's in GTA, that extra 20 fps will keep me in the sweet numbers, it's a crucial 20 fps.

Not sure what I'm going to do, Nvidia may be the better cards but would kind of waste my FreeSync monitor. I can still use 144Hz but its not quite the same and I have no idea what AMDs offerings are going to be like. Will have to wait and see and if Nvidia offer a much much better product for my price range which I haven't decided on yet then I may just get that and skip the Freesync.

I currently still play most games between 60-90 except CSGO but that's because I'm a sucker for the pretty graphics. Would be nice to have a card that did both. As well as run my other 2 screens.

Well, I'm playing the waiting game now, I'm 90% sure I'll be getting a 1070 when I order my new rig (which has now been pushed back a month due to the new Pascal stuff).

Didn't you get a new rig last year?

Nope, last one was back in early June 2013 so it's nearly 3 years old now I'll start a thread when I get back from my hols in June.
Anyways we should probably try and stay on topic :)
