Windows 11 update problem

Windows update was showing this message: "Re-install your current version of windows to repair system files and component "

Tried a recommended update to "Windows 11 Version 24H2 (repair version)" but after 8% download, got this message: "This update can't be downloaded and installed because it's not yet ready for your device"

PC Health checks out 100%. The PC is only a few days old. No added hardware, only installed about 3 apps.

Any solutions?

Update 23 Nov: Can I update to "Windows 11, version 24H2 (repair version)" manually (ie. not through Windows udpate)?
Not sure where to find this.

What version of windows are you on?

If you click on start and then type in run "winver" then post a screenshot?

You can check if you have any incompatible software installed, namely anti-cheats in games

I would also be suspect of your wifi card, as you'll see in that article, Asus is trying to work out compatibility issues and there's a block on some of their hardware until they can roll out a fix

I'm on Windows 24H2 (OS Build 26100.1). I thought there might be an Asus issue: but I also thought the error messages would be more informative. I don't play games, I don't have any special anti-virus software.
May be I'll try removing the Asus WiFi card.

Why? What did you do? PCS will have installed a perfect copy of Windows 11 Pro for you so this shouldn't happen.

I wasn’t aware of this, this is according to a Microsoft tech:

The "Repair version" is offered via Windows Update if you recently quit the Windows Insider Program to stop receiving preview builds. In that case, the repair version update is offered, which, when installed, performs a repair installation and takes the system to a stable version.
Another possibility is that a user on that computer has clicked "Reinstall now" in the "Fix problem using Windows Update" option on Settings → System → Recovery.

I am not aware of having done anything I shouldn't. I may have had a perfect copy of Windows 11, but Windows update gave me half a dozen updates, and all I selected was to accept them. The first I knew of an issue is when one of the updates failed, and it then suggested installing the Repair version.

I don't think I have ever been in the Windows Insiders Program, so I would not have quit it.

That's entirely normal on any new windows system.

Did you select the Fix Problems after the updates failed?

Winver tells me I have Windows 24H2 (OS Build 26100.1) (Windows 11 Pro).

Windows update is showing me (screenshot attached):

Doesn't make any sense, that's a pre-release build of 24/H2 before it even went to gold status

I would simply accept defeat and do a clean install.

Personally I wouldn't, you're upgrading a beta, never good idea.

Thinking about it, the reason you can't may be because it's an expired OS as it's a BETA that went gold in September, it's entirely possible support for that version was pulled a long time ago.

Before you reinstall try the following....
  1. Open an elevated command prompt and enter the following command...
    Code: 
    dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth
    If that generates any kind of error message then a clean install is your best option. If it completes without error then enter the following command...
    Code: 
    sfc /scannow
    If that generates errors that could not be fixed then a clean install is your best option. Otherwise reboot and try installing the Windows updates again.

  2. If you still can't get the updates to install then reset Windows Update by entering each command separately one after the other...
    Code: 
    net stop wuauserv
net stop cryptSvc
net stop bits
net stop msiserver
Ren C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old
Ren C:\Windows\System32\catroot2 Catroot2.old
net start wuauserv
net start cryptSvc
net start bits
net start msiserver
    Then try installing the Windows updates again. If they still fail then a clean install is your best option.

It’s a BETA version, it’s not an official release, this version is from April, the official release wasnf until September and was 10.0.26100.2033

Microsoft highlighted one of the bugs was that you were stuck on this version without a clean install

No idea how I could have gotten on to a Beta release. I didn't get the PC until 19th Nov, and then it would not have been offered to me during Windows update. Very odd.
