Windows 11 update problem

Open an elevated command prompt and enter the following command...

Code: dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth

If that generates any kind of error message then a clean install is your best option. If it completes without error then enter the following command...

Code: sfc /scannow

If that generates errors that could not be fixed then a clean install is your best option. Otherwise reboot and try installing the Windows updates again.

Looking promising:

Code:
C:\Windows\System32>dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth

Deployment Image Servicing and Management tool
Version: 10.0.26100.1

Image Version: 10.0.26100.1

[==========================100.0%==========================] The restore operation completed successfully.
The operation completed successfully.

C:\Windows\System32>sfc /scannow

Beginning system scan. This process will take some time.

Beginning verification phase of system scan.
Verification 100% complete.

Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.

C:\Windows\System32>

I'll try the other options when I'm feeling confident!

So I think this might be related, so I'll wait and see.

Do you have (KB5044284) installed as you don't have KB5046617 installed?

You may be right. The last updates I am showing are:

  • 2024-10 Update for Windows 11 Version 24H2 for x64-based Systems (KB5046683)
    Successfully installed on ‎19/‎11/‎2024
  • 2024-11 Cumulative Update for .NET Framework 3.5 and 4.8.1 for Windows 11, version 24H2 for x64 (KB5045934)
    Successfully installed on ‎21/‎11/‎2024
All subsequent updates have failed. The machine was finished building on 18/11/2024, so Windows 11 Version 24H2 was my first update.

Is there an option to rollback and uninstall 24H2?

That’s not a solution.

The issue is that you’re on a BETA version of 24/H2 that was even before it was in gold status. BETAs don’t have the same support as official public release versions and aren’t eligible for updates.

I've just checked "Uninstall updates", and there is a link to uninstall 24H2 for x64-based Systems (KB5046683).
Does this suggest that I was already on a beta version of 24H2 before I received my PC?
Indeed OS Build 26100.1 is showing as installed on 18/11/2024. I didn't get my PC until the day after. This suggests that PC Specialist installed it. Surely they thought it would update?

Note: Just found that Windows 11 build 26100.1 is described as a base-build here:

Suggest you re-read the thread, this has all already been covered

OK, all fixed!

In the end after going through the MS troubleshooter, and running MS diagnostics (which failed), I had the option to connect with a MS Agent. He connected to my PC, and I think he did what was suggested earlier, which was to start Window services, stop some others, and the repair edition successfully downloaded and install. I am now on Win11 Pro 24H2 Build 26100.2605.

Thank you all for being patient, and offering suggestions, it is always a little scary when it involves problems with windows itself.

Thanks again, Ian
