Meanwhile I'm just going to wait til they've sorted it all out so you don't need TPM, as I cant imagine that'd stay otherwise there would be far too many who cant go to Win11
Well with Windows 10 supported through 2025, that gives plenty of leeway for people to upgrade their hardware.

Any mobo within the last 4 years or so should have TPM functionality.

Now you mention it through @Rakk IIRC didn't they initially try pushing TPM requirement for Windows 10 and then rolled it back due to public outcry?

This was from 2016: https://www.onmsft.com/news/windows-10-machines-will-need-tpm-2-0-enabled-default-summer

According to this, it is 1.2 TPM that is the minimum, not 2.0.

Appears microsoft screwed up what their hard and soft support was. If you don't meet the "soft" requirements you'll be recommended not to upgrade - but what does that mean, in the end?
Good find....

and what on earth is S Mode as a hard floor??? Not heard of that one

  • Smode: Smode is false, or Smode is true and C_ossku in (0x65, 0x64, 0x63, 0x6D, 0x6F, 0x73, 0x74, 0x71)

By the way, for my Asus board, to enable firmware TPM I just had to search for 'TPM' in my BIOS and find it. Should be helpful for anyone else running a recentr ASUS bios.

TechRader has an article covering S mode here (there's also a Microsoft one but its a bit covered in marketting speak).

In 2017, Microsoft added a new feature to its Windows 10 operating system: S mode, a stripped-down, tightly-locked, and low-end PC friendly way to run Windows 10. There are a lot of good reasons to put a Windows 10 PC in S mode, including:

  • It's more secure because it only allows apps to be installed from the Windows Store;
  • It's streamlined to eliminate RAM and CPU use; and
  • Everything a user does in it is automatically saved to OneDrive to free up local storage.

Switched to from "Discrete TPM" to "Firmware TPM" in the BIOS and now I can have Win 11. If I want it. Which I don't.

No firmware TPM in my aged Asus Z170-E BIOS but the board does have a 14-1 TPM connector. Amazon.de have an Asus 14-1 TPM module so I've bought one. The postage was stupid - it was more than the TPM module[!] but for a total of €34 it's probbaly worth getting one now, even if I choose not to use it they'll likely be in demand later in the year.....

Good call getting in there now I’d say

I don't think I'll be in any rush to upgrade to 11 to be honest. Unless there's some serious gains, I'd assume my build should be fine as it was only bought in December and received in January but I'll double check this TPM stuff later

In the Run command box enter the command tpm.msc. That will quickly show you whether you have one.

Does Amazon Germany use the same warehouses as Amazon UK? We only buy from amazon.de since Brexit.
I guess they do as i just looked on there, and they are temporary out of stock, or i assume that's what the message said
