Hi,

I have the standard Matte Screen for the Vortex III Elite available through the configurator page and I can confirm that the specification for the one I have installed is as follows

AU Optronics B173HW01 V.5 - 17.3" Matte 72% Gamut for 17.3" Vortex III Elite

I think that this ticks the boxes for what you have been looking for

Enjoy

Hey Torgan.......Where did you find the make of the screen? I looked in device manager but it just says generic monitor. It says nothing about it being AUO.
Thanks in advance.

I had to replace the screen due to dead pixels (like a fool I never took out the guarantee....), and ordered it through the "my spare parts" section of my PCS order summary page.

The only one that was available to order was the AUO, and when it arrived (next day delivery by the way) the product description on the receipt note was

AU Optronics B173HW01 V.5 - 17.3" Matte 72% Gamut

I still have the old one as backup and just checked it out and there is nothing written on it at all that shows the manufacturer so guess we have to take it on faith. It is however an excellent screen and everything I use it for is vibrant and colourful.
I'll be honest and say that the glossy screen I had in a previous Vortex II laptop was ever so slightly sharper, but the difference is extremely small as far as I can see, and the lack of glare using the matte far outweighs that tiny drawback in my opinion.

Hope this helps :)

Well ive always had glossy screens and i will say the matte screen ive got not is not as vibrant as the glossy i had, but still very nice. Ive got to say tho, the reflections on my glossy screen were horrendous.
Back to the vortex 3 elite screen......Im still none the wiser whether it is a AUO screen or not in my machine....i guess i will have to take pcs word for it. And if it is...prehaps its a standard AUO screen rather than the 72% gamut one that everyone talks about. Does anyone know a way of finding out??? In my device manager it just says generic monitor!!!

I thought you had to pay extra for the 72% Gamut screen and it was a special option. It used to be. I have asked what the gamut rating of the "standard" screen is and was told no figures were available...I was told it was AUO rather than Chi-Mei, though. Darsmi - what is the quality of your screen like ? I expect you DO have the AUO 72 as that is what you were told you were sold. My only pause is about whether the "standard" is comparatively disappointing - if you've been sent the best - there's no way to tell.

Ok guys.....well for a starter.....I wouldnt know the quality differences from the 2 differnet screens. It turns out that ive been told a load of rubbish anyway. After doing some research, i went into device manager, then monitors......when i click on monitor it says "generic pnp monitor". So then i double clicked on generic monitor.....then the details tab......then on the dropdown menu i selected hardware ID.....and it says this"MONITOR\CMO1720"............The CM part gives you a clue to what make it is........so i googled it and it is a CHI MEI screen !!!!!

So basically ive had 2 emails in the last 3 days both telling me that the vortex III elite that arrived at my door yesterday comes with a AUO screen from the manafactuers (clevo).
Im not impressed with being told lies !!! I have emailed PCS and told them im not happy....still waiting for a reply. When you spend a lot of money (in my case £2300+) you expect to get what youre told.....and not an inferior product (assuming the AUO screen is better...which nearly everyone says is!!)
Im not saying the CHI MEI is bad.....but apparently the AUO one is better.

Is the 72 Gamut model sharper, brighter, clearer and less prone to dead pixel issues or other faults ?

I'm in a similar situation except that my Vortex has not been shipped yet, it's in 'testing' now but I have told them that I'm not going to accept it unless it has an AUO screen fitted, as I have previously requested. They said I would need to wait 2 weeks for an AUO but I don't mind waiting; just got the impression that PCS are trying to fob people off with the generic screen.

***UPDATE***

Spoke to Jack @PCS this morning. Told him that i had emails from pcs saying my screen is a AUO one. Also told him that my screen is the Chi Mei screen and not AUO as stated on the emails. Also ive now found a dead pixel(only had it 4 days).
He was very helpful and has told me he will check on monday if they have any AUO screens in and if so he will get my laptop picked up and changed for the AUO one. So hopefully this will be resolved soon.

There are AU Optronics B173HW01 V.5 - 17.3" Matte 72% Gamut for 17.3" Vortex III screens for £85 available now as an upgrade under 'My spare parts' in My account. I've ordered one to go with my laptop.

@Darsmi Great to hear your issue is being resolved. You'll also be a customer who has seen both types of screen. How long did it take you to notice the dead pixel ? How good do you think the Chi-Mei is ? It would be really helpful if, when you receive your replacement, you could comment on the difference in quality. I've only seen one YouTube video directly comparing these two screens and I have to watch them on a Lenovo that I know has a TERRIBLE screen (it is definitely vastly inferior to the other ThinkPad I have seen). From that clip, I can only really make out colour differences. The viewing angles look the same and I can't really tell about brightness, sharpness and general clarity. I've read reviews that criticise the Chi-Mei for being "grainy" - but I don't know if these are just remarks from people who would dismiss ALL matt screens with that term.

I was thinking that. I know it's been a pain for you, but you will be in the rare position of being able to compare the screens with one pair of eyes. Would be very interesting to know how they measure up.

Just to confirm, the AUO screens are now listed on our website again and available to order. :)

Regarding being "fobbed off" - this is never our intention, please therefore let me put the record straight. Some chassis have arrived into stock with AUO screens fitted by default, but we get new deliveries weekly and therefore the model of screen fitted can change. Unless you have specifically ordered an AUO screen, there is no guarantee of the screen model that you will receive.

The employees in our call centre are aware that some stock has had AUO screens fitted, but they never come into contact with our production facility who go off what the order states, nothing more. If a call centre employee has written you an email promising an AUO screen, it is an error and they should not have said this. If however they have stated that some models at present have AUO screens fitted, this does not translate as a promise.

If you want to be guaranteed an AUO screen, please either order this directly or use the "amend order" facility to ensure this is fitted to your existing order.

Ok thats fair enough.......But i sent Jack @PCS the 2 emails i received.....and it clearly states the chassis i ordered comes fitted with the AUO screen....This is a line from 1 of the emails...... "Please accept our apologies, I can confirm that the laptop is fitted with the AUO screen as standard by Clevo." So to me and i think most people it would indicate the AUO would have been fitted to my laptop, but it wasnt !!! It does not say its sometimes fitted with different screen. Im just stating what the emails say !!!
Anyway....regarding the chi mei screen....i wouldnt say it was grainy, in fact i think its ok......but ive heard the AUO is better. But i have found 1 dead or stuck pixel on my chi mei screen after owning it for about 4 days. In the meantime, im still waiting for PCS to get back to me regarding swapping my screen.

Hello Darsmi

I am so glad that you put a detailed description here of what you need to do to find out the type of monitor that is installed on the machine. I waited MONTHS for the AUO and paid extra for it as soon as it was back in stock on the evening of February 11th. When my machine arrived the monitor was faulty and I had to return the computer immediately. The screen was replaced and the computer got back to me today (despite being supposed to have been redelivered last Friday).

I started it up and was quite surprised by how grainy the screen was. It is identified as a CMO1720.

I am supposed to be receiving my Vortex back tomorrow after its second return to PC Specialist. My fault report says that it has been fitted with an AUO screen. I have paid for the upgrade (£85+) AUO Matt LED. Am I correct in thinking that its code number is B173HWO1 V.5 ? How will that show up in Windows ? This is supposed to be a 72 Gamut display. Having read in this thread that there is a "standard" AUO panel - I don't want to find that I have a machine that has been fitted with the wrong screen AGAIN.
