Those who have purchased a Recoil IV

Hi all.

This is an amalgamation of a post I previously had in a non-tech help section, so posted here instead:

I have just received my Recoil IV yesterday and I have just installed my own Windows 10 Pro copy. I have installed all the software and drivers from PCS and updated drivers further where necessary. Windows is also up to date.
However, I'm having 2 huge issues at the moment.

1st is - insane, and quite frankly unacceptable, fan speeds/noise that I wouldn't even use it if I can't manage this somehow.
Even after installing everything and setting everything to either eco, best battery life, office mode etc. I think the fans still are way too much for just general browsing folders in Windows or searching Google, writing a document etc.

I even set the fan curve as low as I could and it still was kicking in loud without really doing anything that I would call strenuous.

The fans turned off really briefly for a few seconds and it felt like it was definitely the way it should be, considering the low level of constant utilisation needed for the tasks in hand. It didn't last long and fans randomly kicking in with high speed when it really shouldn't.

I noticed another user had mentioned that they were able to get the system to run quiet under light gaming, which is my expectation really. Currently I can just be sitting idle and it's very noticeable in a room with plenty of other noise going on.

And 2nd issue - the battery life. Now, the spec suggests a "huge" battery with "typical" usage of 8 hours. I am experienced enough to know that 8 hours is not likely to be achievable most of the time BUT - just with a clean Windows 10 install and the the battery settings set to eco, I'm getting just over an hour at best while I'm simply configuring Windows and settings etc. This can't be right? I had the battery on charge over the night and today it's just not going to last me much more than an hour. Yikes.
I restarted my system during a driver install and the percentage dropped 10% with the "1 hour remaining" ending up giving me close to 40 mins in reality.

I'm a new member here and any further tips and advice on setup here would be much appreciated.

Cann you post the full specs from the order page?

So what method did you choose to install windows, can you describe the process?

When installing drivers, you allow windows update to install all it can, then if there are any left over, you install them manually from the PCS downloads. Also, you need to install the management driver otherwise the system isn't configured and it will run hot and so the fans will be loud at all times.

Until windows is configured, it won't be running properly.

Regarding installation of Windows: as it had HOME installed, I needed to clean install Pro so did so from USB as is the way. I removed the original system partitions during installation and created a new one and the then the installation did it's thing.
I let Windows update work itself away in the background and then updated further Intel drivers found by their tool all good. I installed the drivers from PCS for any outstanding devices flagged in Device Manager...like the Thunderbolt one.
I believe I have installed everything and there wasn't anything specifically called Management Driver so if you can let me know which this refers to?

Thanks again for your help. 👍🏻

Ah, great, yep, perfect way of installing. Personally I wouldn't suggest the Intel automatic driver sourcer, I've had issues with it in the past, but hopefully it will remain stable.

The management driver will be in your PCS downloads, but can't remember for the life of me what it's called on Tong Fang... could be Gaming Center or control center. If you take a copy of the drivers on your PCS account, we should be able to identify it.

Yeah, have that installed and have tweaked the settings. The only way I can get it to not constantly kick in fan bursts every time I do something like open a browser window or download something, is it set the fan curve flat and set it to office mode and then Windows to eco power mode. Which kinda makes it pointless having a nice, zippy system if I have to run it all pared back just to not have the fans constantly clicking into action.

I dare not even start to use it properly, like editing some videos or editing photos etc.
I'm sad..haha.

have you tried the default mode settings first - what one is it set to- I have three - Office, game and turbo mode - I leave mine on Game mode and it manages the fans perfectly for my liking (although appreciate i have a different machine - but its tongfang chassis too so assuming the GamingCenter is similar.).

Silly question and apologies if already covered as didnt re-read posts above, are you monitoring temperatures at all just in case there is an issue with temp? HW Monitor - leave running - see what max it gets to.

Hi. I have mine set to Office in order to keep it quiet but as I intend to use the Laptop for more media creation (Adobe video and photography based stuff) and some gaming, I'll probably need to move it into the other modes. I'm just bothered if it is really intense fan noise. I know a friend has a decent spec Dell XPS 15 and it's much quieter under load and wonder if I'm ever going to be able to tame this Recoil IV.

I noticed that just idle, the CPU temps are around 60 ish, which is double that of my PC. I know laptops and PCs are different beasts but 60 seems high to me.

Would there actually be any way to further mod the cooling solution to make to better and quieter? I'm thinking I may have to request a different build/chassis altogether that is decent spec with more pleasant acoustics. 🤔

Yes, those temps are too high, it could mean a bad paste job.

I would repaste it personally to get those resting temps down, they should be in the 40's

What are the temps if you run a stress like Prime95?

I'll run Prime95 when I'm home later and see what the temps are.

Cheers.

Right. I ran Prime95 and while I couldn't run it for 24 hours, it didn't crash.

However, I'm still having major issues with unbelievably high CPU temps and fan noise when barely even doing anything. It shouldn't sound like a PS4 Pro when just downloading an update in the background on Battlenet, with just 10-20% CPU utilisation and fans set to office and the curve low...it's unacceptable really.

Look at these videos:

Also, I couldn't even sit in a coffee shop and edit some photos without it being sooo distracting that I just packed up and left.

Hi again....

While I have contacted support regarding my issues (and they have suggested RMA), I haven't been in a position to send the laptop back over the Christmas period. However, I tuned it on recently and I am now unable to boot beyond the BIOS while on battery. If I connect the power supply, it boots to Windows fine - totally random! I have tried it many times and I can't figure out why.
Anyone have a clue what is going on there? :(

As above, it's likely a paste issue, that's the first thing to try, need to get temps normal and then can start troubleshooting.

I'm sure you have already checked this, but does the battery have sufficient charge to boot up the laptop?

Yeah, it does, it's full. And the time & date are still correct in BIOS so I know it's not a CMOS battery issue.

It's really annoying.

Very likely... once you get the control center installed and working, it's so easy to control the noise. I don't get why so many people have the same issue.
Control centre is installed and does work - in that changing the settings does have an observable effect.

It may well be installed, but control center is a management driver which means it ties to all the drivers on the OS.

If the OS and drivers aren't configured correctly, you'll get constant fans and high temps.

Still no really luck with this problem of going straight to the BIOS from power on. I can 'save and restart' a few times (could be 2, could be 10) and it magically boots into Windows. I don't get it. Nothing was changed to instigate this behaviour as far as I'm concerned.
