Glad you kept your job, a worrying time.

I was also lucky with redundancy but the other way round. We had a new editor and he was a disgusting creep but there were strong rumours of major redundancies in a few years.

I did just enough to avoid getting the sack but also to make sure I would be on the redundancy list. Same time did an OU language studies degree and got my TEFL qualifications.

Following redundancy had a great few years doing short term teaching contracts and enjoying holidays in Germany and Austria.

Well done on the Job :) Just a perfect excuse now to get a second Ultragear ;)
The OH got one of the reduced ones on Amazon before they were gone as he was jealous of mine 😂 They'll all gone now, I wish I'd got a second one!

That sounds like a really interesting time, I'd love to so something like that. Sadly my redundancy pay wouldn't have been very reasonable as I haven't been in this job for long yet after losing my previous job at the start of the pandemic. At least I'm keeping this one now, hopefully for a long time!

I'm presuming your language studies degree covered German? My brother used to live and work in Germany so I have spent many years out there and learnt enough German to get myself by. I've worked there myself a couple of times, lovely country. I would like to go back when it's safe to travel again.

It was German, always found it easier than French but a lot of that was down to my school. The German teacher was an amazing person, one of those you just automatically respected, whereas the French bloke was an old fashioned bully type and no one got on with him.

I was lucky with reduncay as had 15 years with the company. Am also single with no dependents so if it went wrong was not hurting anyone else.

The German is another reason I love PCS, as always use a QWERTZ keyboard now.

Ah as good as any reason I suppose. I always found it easier to pick up than other languages, French frustrates me and I'm currently learning Finnish....which is pretty challenging! 😅

I could have also guessed the language was German by the art is freedom quote you have as your signature that I've just spotted! :)

Good luck with Finnish, probably the hardest language to learn.

I love the work of Klimt and the others of the Seccession, the quote is their motto. Been to Wien many times, love the local accent, some Germans even struggle with it.

After waiting patiently my new gaming PC has arrived. I must say I am very impressed! My last gaming PC was bought back in 2006 so I've been out of the PC master race club for a while now. 😅

What a nice thing to get on a Friday afternoon, especially as I find out if my job is at risk of redundancy next Wednesday.

I went with the great recommendations of this forum and adapted my spec to suit my needs and I also picked up the LG Ultragear 27" monitor on another good tip, when I can afford to I'm replacing my old work screen next to it with another LG Ultragear as it's great quality.

View attachment 21832My spec for those interested, my budget was £2k:
