Optimus V Fan Noise

I have just received the following and after 2 days am considering a full refund due to fan noise, I have 3 days to decide !!!!!

Chassis & Display Optimus Series: 15.6" Matte Full HD LED Widescreen (1920x1080)
Processor (CPU) Intel® Core™i7 Quad Core Mobile Processor i7-4700MQ (2.40GHz) 6MB
Memory (RAM) 24GB SAMSUNG 1600MHz SODIMM DDR3 MEMORY (3 x 8GB)
Graphics Card NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 765M - 2.0GB DDR5 Video RAM - DirectX® 11
2nd Graphics Card NONE
Memory - 1st Hard Disk 240GB KINGSTON V300 SSD, SATA 6 Gb (450MB/R, 450MB/W)
2nd Hard Disk 750GB WD SCORPIO BLACK WD7500BPKX, SATA 6 Gb/s, 16MB CACHE (7200 rpm)

unfortunately the fan issue is very prominent.....

spoke to support today and am being supplied with 1.03.01 bios and ec firmware tomorrow.

In advance on pcspecialist own supplied bios etc, I downloaded and installed from the above links...

At 1st I thought all was good, and it did spin up/down fan and was quiet, but now after an hour it is on constantly, and all I'm doing is browsing the net

speedfan shows temp at only 37C.......

I'll update with the one I receive tomorrow, but the dilemma is can I stand the noise, over what is a good laptop so far....

Rich

Weird, it did resolve pretty much all issues for me. It even stopped the fan from going 100% while booting for me.

I have a work colleague who recently bought an almost exact same spec from one of PCSpecialist competitors, internals and chassis exactly same model, his is experiencing no fan noise at all, only difference is the OS, mine windows 7 professional N and his windows 8.

his ec is 1.00.09

It would seem this issue is not across the whole of this type chassis etc

But I'll flash with PCSpecialist bios when I get it, I expect it to be same as I already have.
2 days to make a decision !!!! :)

About the fan noise itself: Mine is quiet and the fan only kicks in when I start a gpu-intensive application so no problems here. Running Windows 8 Pro with the latest drivers. Not sure about the BIOS version though.

Installed EC & Firmware supplied by PCSpecialist last night and initial tests are looking good :) fingers crossed I'll use it lots over the weekend for a proper test, but happy that I will not be sending back...

Is now quiet on boot with only a few short bursts of fan over 2 hours usage, which is pretty good

Why can't I get this update? I have asked several times and been told there is no fix. Then keep on reading that there is.

There is a new BIOS from CLEVO but there is no confirmation it changes any fan tables, its main fix is to add 8.1 support.

Well... my Optimus V is also ramping up the fan while on idle after doing nothing intensive for a while. CPU is only 40 degrees. Seems like it's all too common on these models. Shame to be honest. I need to use it in lectures without it blow drying the persons hair in front of me.

I have the Optimus V from PCSpecialist with the i7-4700qm, 8gb ram, 750gb WD scorpio black and windows 7 pro for nearly 3 weeks now and initially (first two days) I had the problem of the fan for about 3 seconds on idle about a handful of times throughout the day. However since (once the laptop/drivers/programs got sorted) it rarely ever comes on randomly without justification like a heavy load (maybe once every couple of days or even week on idle for like 3 seconds). I was worried about the fan being loud and in particular this fan problem, but it seems to me that I got lucky reading from these forums and that there are a lot more people worse off. Apart from the drivers from PCSpecialist and well other program drivers and such that I put on I have not installed or meddled with anything towards the fan problem. When I use the laptop even when browsing the Internet I have the Notepal U3 on, on either maximum or minimum (depending what I left it on after a game) on a table and when I do experience an unjustified fan blast (very rare) the laptop is off the cooler and temps are normal 50C-60C. To me this problem is nonexistent due to the rare instances it occurs, and there may be many more like me but you will likely complain about something especially a product you bought than praise it on a forum. To those waiting on the fabled fan fix from clevo I wish good luck since it's been A WHILE!

Bought a very similar spec to this for my son. It came today and although I've just fired it up and checked it out, the fan has only briefly spun up once and that was very briefly. Stupidly I never expected that it would need an external drive so I never ordered one. I have now and when it arrives my son will put some of his games on it. They are quite graphics intensive so I expect to see how it performs then. Initial thoughts are positive and hopefully everything will be good. It's running Windows 7 and has an Intel SSD, i didn't go for 2 drives, maybe that will help and I also opted for the Arctic cooling paste, not sure if that will help but it may do

Well... I have to say that I run a cooling pad on my Optimus most of the time now and it seems to be very quiet for me indeed. The fan barely has a reason to trigger at full speed, and even shut off after being at full speed on desktop for a while, where before I never expected it to quieten down.

Seems the fans are a little erratic on these things. But to be honest, I don't personally mind too much, just other people might in lectures. :)

The people need a hero!

could anyone, please, summarize this whole thread; means:
... try to make an easily understandable kind of tutorial how to solve the fan issue. for dummies (like me)
For instance, how do i install this:

I think Clevo got rid of the fan issue with their 1.03.01 bios and ec firmware. It seems to be even better than it was on EC 1.00.07.
Again they are downloadable on the site where I bought my w350st (optimus v).
http://www.btodownloads.nl/index.php?dir=Notebooks (Drivers)/15CL58 - 17CL58 (W350ST - W370ST)/Bios/

how do I .. "Enter CMOS setup to disable "Intel Anti-Theft Technology" if the item is available."?
etc.

there should be a way to fix this also as a no-windows-pro.

A million thanks to that person

So, just to follow up since I updated via latest firmware 1 week ago.... Fan bursts are definately few and far between now, and very controlled unlike the full on fan experienced before.

As for the comments about the latest update having no fan fixes - I def can't comment, whether it was this update or whether it just sorted itself.... but as PCSpecialist supplied me with this after concerns about the fan alone, I think it's a worthwhile exercise.

Andi, full and very simple step by step instructions come with the firmware upgrade, how to get into Bios etc, give PCSpecialist a bell, they we're very helpful and friendly and def understood the concerns expressed.

I love my new laptop it flies and with how my support call's we're treated, I'm very glad to have bought from here :)

Is there someone that can sum up everything and post a small tutorial on what to do? I am a little confused and don't want to mess up my laptop.

I am using a Sager-np7352 laptop and the fan has been going on and off and even started making some weird noises, so any help would be appreciated to a noobie like me.

You need to contact the retailer/manufacturer of your laptop. Not sure if your laptop is the same chassis/model as the optimus V.

Well I have an Nvidia Optimus sticker next to my Geforce GTX sticker, HDMI, etc. Does that help or are there different kinds of the Optimus?

Optimus V and Sager NP7352 are made from same Clevo W350ST.

While restarting you PC, press 'F2' key to go to BIOS. Note the current versions of your BIOS and EC/KMC. Then email reseller/sagernotebook with serial number(back of the notebook), current BIOS versions and ask for the latest BIOS updates.

Please can anyone tell me if the Optimus V 13.3" has this problem? If so, which is the best way to go about fixing it? I'm going to receive my laptop soon so I hope that it doesn't have this problem, but asking just in case. Can list the specs if that would help.

Hi I have had a Vortex III for about a year and I would like to reduce my fan speed: I guess I am looking at the Passive setting in the power management and also a possible bios update. I have noticed that IAStorDataSvc is using 1GB Ram and my 32 of RAM is a 98 % :)() so will shortly do reboot. In my case I need to host VMs in win 8.1 hyper-v so I am pretty memory intensive.

I can't say anything but being quite upset at the way this issue has been handled.

I love the optimus v in about every way, except for its fan control. This post is just about the fan control, and by extension the way its been handled.
The Optimus V (Clevo W350ST) has faulty fan control. For one it doesn't know when to stop, secondly when the fan is switched on to cool, the bios knows no levels of speed, just full on and idle. Which for all intents and purposes can be considered "off".
(I must admit the really short bursts seem to go at half speed sometimes, but this might be the signal being so short the fan never powers on full. This is however an exception not the rule. I have never experienced or read anyone experiencing long periods of quiet cooling)

The problem
Its great the laptop has a strong fan, the stronger the better the laptop is able to perform. For the laptops price/performance, its no wonder it doesn't sport a expensive body with multiple fans, or a special design for better cooling. With just one fan, its no surprise this fan runs quite loud when the system is performing at its max, which again, is a good thing.
However, when the system isn't, the bios occasionally fires the fan up fully. On a low resource system like mine, this means the system slowly heats up over the course of an hour, until the parts are at a temperature they decide they want cooling. Because my system barely works, and thus barely heats, I get a 1s burst of noise, every 20 - 600s when the laptop has been on for a long time. And yes, it sometimes happens I get a 1s burst 6 times in 2 minutes.

When I was using a more resource intensive system, the laptop would stay quiet for maybe 30 min, then cool for 10 sec, and go back at it again a minute or 10 later. This meant that when I went to a meeting, I'd have to be ready to suspend my laptop or have my laptop be very present and annoying for 10 sec, every 10 min.

Lastly it sometimes doesn't know when to stop cooling. Once you start using your laptop seriously (no games but things past entering text, that require some cpu/gpu, 1080p video for example) the cores will usually get to 65 degrees, and start dancing around below that with the laptop applying some idle cooling (very slow, near noiseless cooling, unheard from across a room). Unfortunately, at some point, whatever bad driver or chip controls the fan decides it has had enough. This is where the last problem comes in, it cools all cores to sub 38 degree temperatures. Usually they dance around below 39 degrees. But then for some reason, the cooling doesn't stop. 38 degrees is extremely low for quad cores on laptops. Some cores even reach 32 degrees at this point and for understandable reasons hit a low point. This continues for 10 minutes after which the chip again for unknown reasons decides its time to stop cooling.

None of these scenarios are normal. Neither happen on other laptops. This model and its motherboard/bios simply have a problem.

The solution

There is no fix. People who say they fixed it in here are lying.
The bios updates seem to improve things. The cooling is less frequent, and long periods of cooling on idle systems are reported gone as well. However the fact remains, that when the fan powers on, it powers on full. Something that isn't supposed to or happens with other laptops.

PCS involvement
Let me be clear I have not contacted pcs, but are merely speaking on a basis of the comments I've read here. However this may definitely be seen as an invitation to explain themselves.

This is were I get upset. PCS knew when I purchased my laptop, this problem existed.
PCS did nothing to either inform or reach out to people affected by this problem. As far as I can tell (I'll be sure to mail them), nothing is being done to alleviate or solve the issue.
This is a severe lack in quality control. Know its there, do nothing, and worst of all, keep selling a faulty Clevo model.

Concluding
PCS offers laptops at prices I couldn't find anyone beating in western Europe. They offer a lot of customization, and deliver fast in the scope of things.
They are definitely a retailer I would buy from again. However I'll always be sure to check the parts included in the build for reported issues, because I have lost all trust in their quality control. (outside of the building)
My advice, don't buy this laptop, unless you don't mind noise that is present normally, and dominates quiet rooms or two person conversation.
