Optimus V Fan Noise

Been told the issue is caused by the firmware update on page 15 which is not supported by PCS

I would recommend not installing this firmware.

Since i installed it my laptop has been pure beautiful, had no issues with performance
and the fan is normal now! :D
No way i would remove the firmware since it's done such a good job :p

And before i downloaded it, I asked pcspecialist if it was complety safe and would not harm my laptop since they had looked into it for me, they told me it was safe and the worst that COULD happen is no changes to your laptop at all

Now you make me want to go and take the risk. I'll have to hold back and wait for something official though.

Pcspecialist assured me it was completely safe, so if something is going wrong for some people then that's dissapointing :(
But yeah perhaps wait for official just incase

Here are some other sources of more up to date Clevo BIOS files. I've not used any of these, use at your own risk etc!

http://repo.palkeo.com/clevo-mirror/W3xxST/ - an unofficial mirror of clevo ftp for this laptop, files listed but not always up to date.

http://repo.palkeo.com/clevo-mirror - same, other Clevo

ftp://ftp.clevo.com.tw/ALLBIOS/W3xxST/ - official clevo, but doesn't list the files, so you need to try different filenames - eg...

ftp://ftp.clevo.com.tw/ALLBIOS/W3xxST/B14.zip - current latest BIOS

ftp://ftp.clevo.com.tw/ALLBIOS/W3xxST/E08.zip - current latest EC. The md5s of these and B14.zip files match the md5s of the files that pcspecialist sent me the other day - BIOS 1.00.14 and EC 1.00.08, although the pcspecialist usb stick has more files on it - scripts to run the right commands, boot logs etc.

ftp://ftp.clevo.com.tw/ALLBIOS/ - other Clevo

http://forum.notebookreview.com/sager-clevo/416916-clevo-bios-thread-354.html - a useful thread on another forum...

Again, I've not used any of these, pcspecialist sent me a USB stick with new firmware. The md5sums of the downloadable files match the md5sums of the corresponding files on the USB stick. Use at your own risk!

Hi, just read this whole thread. Is there definately an authentic confirmed fix on the way for this fan issue?, I ordered a 15.6" Optimus V a few weeks ago and after a brief problem with cpu stocks it should be with me very soon, I have known about this potential fan problem for a while so I am anticipating it happening to me (I use large isolating headphones whilst gaming so atleast for now I can endure it) but talk of official fixes is what has made me not cancel my order thus far. Is it something that is definitely still coming for the fan problem in particular?

Haven't heard anything about the official fan fix at all in months, you may want to ask Pcspecialist i gave up with asking and installed the Firmware and the fan is alot better for me but i would try asking

When my Optimus IV comes out of sleep, it won't clock higher than 1.6Ghz until i reboot the machine. Then its back up to full speed. Just means i can't use sleep or hibernate which is a pain

I have my Optimus V about 3 months now and am having the same issue mentioned previously. Updated to the latest BIOS that they sent but the problem still remains.
If CLEVO are working on fix its fine, but it would be good to get some feedback from PCS regarding this.

Thanks

I think Clevo got rid of the fan issue with their 1.03.01 bios and ec firmware. It seems to be even better than it was on EC 1.00.07.
Again they are downloadable on the site where I bought my w350st (optimus v).
http://www.btodownloads.nl/index.php?dir=Notebooks (Drivers)/15CL58 - 17CL58 (W350ST - W370ST)/Bios/

Promising news - can more people confirm?

Considering biting the bullet, would prefer this but was erring towards the Cosmos II due to lesser negative/problematic feedback

As far as I know it is not applicable to the 13.3" as it is a different motherboard (so shouldn't have the fault).

http://www.digitaltrends.com/laptop-reviews/avadirect-clevo-w230st-review/

It sounds like it still has the problem in this review, as it's said the fan goes loud even when relatively low-stressed (not gaming)? A few other reviews mention it though they aren't as bothered. Still, sounds like it has a similar issue, or is this unavoidable for the laptop's size and specs?

Regarding the Optimus V and it's fan noise. What are acceptable temperatures for the 13" version carrying a GTX765? I'm getting around 95 degrees Celsius with Speedfan (With the Arctic MX-4 Thermal Paste). Normal temperatures, or a bit high for extended periods of time?

No laptop cooler. And yes, during games.

When gaming I would use it with a laptop cooler or at least elevate the back to help dissipate heat. Not sure if you are able to increase the fan speed on an Optimus chassis but if you can I would also try it.

I have just received the following and after 2 days am considering a full refund due to fan noise, I have 3 days to decide !!!!!

Chassis & Display Optimus Series: 15.6" Matte Full HD LED Widescreen (1920x1080)
Processor (CPU) Intel® Core™i7 Quad Core Mobile Processor i7-4700MQ (2.40GHz) 6MB
Memory (RAM) 24GB SAMSUNG 1600MHz SODIMM DDR3 MEMORY (3 x 8GB)
Graphics Card NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 765M - 2.0GB DDR5 Video RAM - DirectX® 11
2nd Graphics Card NONE
Memory - 1st Hard Disk 240GB KINGSTON V300 SSD, SATA 6 Gb (450MB/R, 450MB/W)
2nd Hard Disk 750GB WD SCORPIO BLACK WD7500BPKX, SATA 6 Gb/s, 16MB CACHE (7200 rpm)

unfortunately the fan issue is very prominent.....

spoke to support today and am being supplied with 1.03.01 bios and ec firmware tomorrow.

In advance on pcspecialist own supplied bios etc, I downloaded and installed from the above links...

At 1st I thought all was good, and it did spin up/down fan and was quiet, but now after an hour it is on constantly, and all I'm doing is browsing the net

speedfan shows temp at only 37C.......

I'll update with the one I receive tomorrow, but the dilemma is can I stand the noise, over what is a good laptop so far....
