Optimus V Fan Noise

Had my Optimus V a day now, seems decent enough. One big negative is that the fan will come on every few minutes, FULL SPEED! Even when the CPU is just at 50 degrees minimum load, using onboard GPU

Its so loud i can almost hear it from upstairs, its really beginning to irritate me. I need to bring this laptop to customer sites and to study on at the library, and i'm worried its just not going to work

What can i do to stop the fan ramping up unnecessarily?

Check the System Cooling Policy you have set. It's under Power Options in Control Panel. Scroll down the list of advanced power options until you find the one for Processor Power Management, expand that one. Then expand System Cooling Policy, you can select from two options; Active and Passive.

Passive slows down the processor before increasing the fan speed (so this is the quietest option).

Active increases the fan speed before slowing down the processor (so this is the best performance option).

See whether that helps?

It happens with mine.. I love it because it annoys the girlfriend.

Like Ubuysa says it should be in there, or check the BIOS.

Did changing the system cooling policy make any difference? Interested in getting one of these and the fan acting like that would really annoy me.

I've had the Optimus V since Thursday and changing the system cooling policy hasn't stopped the fan from running at 100% when I am doing nothing. Any help would be appreciated.

I'm also having the same problem i got my laptop today and i agree it's pretty loud even for a fan

I've not been able to stop it. I feel like it should have been mentioned on the sales page to be honest, as i've had people tell me the noise is ridiculous. However, as i bought the machine on finance, i am probably stuck with it now

Me neither yet.. it just seems to go way too fast hence making it loud and i can't find any way to control the speed of the fan..

I've got an older model of the Optimus, and whilst the fan may be a tad loud its certainly not annoying.

In any case.. the fan is only spinning up to keep the cpu/gpu cool or within certain temperatures. IF the fan wasnt spinning up, then the cpu would probably end up running hotter than it should be. if, it wasn't spinning we'd all be moaning that our cpu's are too hot. lol.

Anyway I'd suggest getting a cooling pad, to raise the system up so air can flow underneath, this will help with temperatures and noise.

But remember guys, the laptops PCS sell, (even the low/mid range models) are all high end products, in a small case. You have loads of components packed next to each other, including a cpu and a gpu they are going to get a bit toasty.

Even with a Coolermaster Notepal V3 my fan still randomly goes on at 100% every few minutes even when I'm not using it. It does get quite annoying. GPU idles at about 43 and the cores about 40. With some games the fan is constantly on even though the temps don't get higher than 60 C. I don't really mind it with the games though as you want your Laptop to be as cool as possible. Other times the fan is completely silent and the Laptop manages to keep cool.
A BIOS update or something to fix the cooling policy from Clevo would be good.

Yeah it's like you said for some reason runs at maximum fan speed when it doesn't need to even when i just turn my laptop on and go straight into a game the fan goes crazy even if it could be lowered somewhat it would help a ton and still keep the laptop cool enough

What exactly are you doing when the fans are making the noise? Do they kick in as soon as you start the system? what temps are you recording?

Soon as i start any game such as Alan wake with higher graphics and temp is around 50c tried cooling pad and everything the fan just jumps to 100% and doesn't stop for ages after that and it does also randomly start the fan 100% even when i'm not doing anything sometimes

If the fans start as soon as you start a game I find it normal regardless of the temperatures since you are pushing the gpu/cpu. For a gaming laptop you should expect some noise, I got the vortex IV and I use headphones when gaming so it is not really an issue for me but when doing work (office, adobe) the laptop is pretty silent. If the fans are blasting as soon as you start your system there might be something going on but when gaming you should expect that.

The noise is a bit annoying. Its similar to that of the Alienware m14x which has a bit of reputation now due to it.

Since first getting mine the fan doesn't seem to do it as often as it did. For me, its the fact that its either silent or 100%. I think everyone knows they have reasonably powerful laptops and noise will come, but some form of fan control in the BIOS would be great. For info, my fan would kick in even during desktop tasks at first but has settled to only now and again but always on games.

Although I agree with this somewhat the fan shouldn't be SO loud you can hear it from another room or another part of the house, that's ridiculous noise if you ask me. I have a gaming laptop and although the fan ramps up when I'm playing games it's never so loud that anyone outside of my room can hear it. My boyfriend can hear the fan EXTREMELY clearly even with headphones on while playing games. PCS should have at least warned their customers how loud the fan was, if my boyfriend knew it would be this loud he wouldn't of bought it..

If the fans are very loud I would suggest contacting PCS technical support to make sure there is nothing wrong with the laptop.

I push the fans to full speed (Fn+1) when gaming to make sure the gpu remains cool, I wouldn't suggest attempting to decrease the fan speed since it helps keep your components last longer. I would suggest recording temperatures to check when the fans are kicking in, if they are when temps are less than 40 degrees then I would suspect there is something wrong.

My fan is currently doing 0% then 100% and alternating between these every 15 mins or so at these temps. I'm not even using it. The only thing that bothers me is Temp1 which might be causing the fan to come on.
Like AxeBoy said its either off or 100%. It doesn't ramp up slowly which is what I would like to see. It does seem to do it less the longer the laptop is running which is weird.

Before my earlier post I was playing Saints Row 2 with the GPU staying at 48 and the cores going as high as 43. The fan was on constant at 100% even 20 minutes or so after closing the game. It is loud enough that some people may even hear it over headphones or the built in speakers. I don't mind it while gaming because I would rather keep everything cool but when idling it is annoying.

Do you think PcSpecialist would give me a refund for this? i mean i know laptops are supposed to kick in fans at high levels of noise but i can't even hear the game with headphones in..
