New PCS Build Windows 10 Pro Activation question

Hi,

I have noticed on my new PCS build that Windows 10 Pro has been activated with a digital license. But under “Update product key” it states “The last product key (ID: xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxOEM) you entered cannot be used on this copy of Windows. (0xC0020036)”

It looks like the Product ID not Product Key was entered, but Windows still seems to be activated because it is stored in the motherboard BIOS.

Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated, please.

Thank you.

Can you take a screenshot and post it?

that’s a pretty serious error, it does mean that the license has failed and windows updates will no longer install.

I would contact PCS when you get a moment and run through getting it licensed. You don’t want to be without updates for any period of time, just too risky.

Further edit, for now, try disabling controlled folder access, then open cmd as admin and type sfc /scannow

Hi,

I have taken a print screen of the Windows Activation screen and I have also run the system file checker, which found and repaired some corrupt files. The results are saved in their respective log files.

Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated, please.

Thank you.

And does it still show the 0xC0020036 now that SFC has fixed some errors?

Are all the latest updates installed?

Did you buy it with Windows 10 Pro included or did you install your own copy?

Hi,

Yes the error 0xC0020036 is still being shown since I ran the system file checker last night and shutdown the PC and powered it back on today.

All the latest Windows Updates have been installed as of yesterday.

This version of Windows 10 Professional was pre-installed as part of my new PCS build, so should be a paid full license.

Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated, please.

Thank you.

Did you actually pay for Windows 10 Pro in your original order?

Posting your full spec from the order page would help too. :)

I’d contact PCS to get it checked.

I have sent an email to PC Specialist including a print screen of the Windows 10 Pro activation screen, showing the exact error message under the "Change product key" section.

I am waiting for a reply from them.
Thats your best option I think. Let us know how this gets resolved for our own education please? [emoji3]

Hi,

I did get a reply back from PC Specialist. They want me to phone them next time I am with the machine, so they can remote connect to it to investigate because the Windows 10 Activation screenshot that I included in my email, like the one I have already attached to a previous post in this thread is contradictory because it seems that it is activated and shows the error message.

To be honest, I am not comfortable with them connecting to my machine remotely.

Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated, please.

Thank you.

Why aren’t you comfortable for them to remote in?

I have alot of files, games installed and emails stored on my machine. I have not had to use remote connect before and as this is a new PC remote access is turned off.

I have looked at the System page in Control Panel and it says that Windows is activated under the Windows activation section at the bottom of the page.

Shouldn’t make any difference, they’d probably use something like teamviewer.

If you don't trust the people who built your PC then who will you ever trust? In any case you'll most likely be able to see what they're doing.....

Remote assistance allows you to view and take-over at any time so you will see everything. Team viewer is the same.

It's only the likes of Remote Desktop that you would be blind with but there's no way they will use this method as it requires port forwarding etc.

Hi,

Before I do this what is the process to establish the remote connection to my PC? Will I need to be signed into a Microsoft account or be sent a code via email to grant access?

Thank you.

There are multiple ways to do it. The most straight forward is normally the email link code. You would need to contact PCS and ask them their process.
