Monitor Recommendations (Work in progress)

Hi all

Monitors are a very important subject with all PC's obviously, they're the final output of all that power you've configured in your PC / Laptop and it's important that the monitor pairs correctly with your build for optimum performance.

There have been quite significant improvements with monitor technology over the last few years so thought it worth collaborating an up to date list of our usual recommendations based on rough configuration and use case.

The general advice is, you need to pair the resolution with your build. With refresh rate (Hz), Hz = FPS, so you want the fastest Hz you can afford for your given resolution. Even if your GPU can only push a fraction of the Hz, still get 144Hz if you can afford it.

The general rule is, to be considered adequate for gaming, the GPU needs to push a minimum of 60FPS at full settings for that monitor.

Here we'll list the resolution and refresh, and next to that, the rough GPU's that pair with it.

GAMING - Adaptive sync of Freesync or Gsync is a given for any gaming monitor these days, any without this technology aren't considered. Adaptive sync is where the monitor synchronises the refresh rate of the monitor with that of the GPU leading to reduced tearing and much smoother performance even at lower FPS. Nvidia cards will work with either GSync or Freesync monitors, AMD cards will only work with Freesync monitors as of time of writing

Yeah, they pulled it because the reviewer samples that went out were reported to have issues with flickering at 240Hz, so they've pulled it to sort that out.

I'm sincerely hoping it won't be long before it's on general sale, but even then, I think demand is so high it will probably sell out quite quick. Obviously they'd restock it, but I just think it's going to be incredibly popular despite the price. I mean really for what you're getting, I think it's insanely good value!

Would advise keeping an eye out for it.

@SpyderTracks , probably a really dumb question, the monitors above all need either a Super or a Ti to run. Is that to run them at the max refresh rate? Where do the non-super/ti cards sit?

The supers replaced the non supers, they’re just a newer version for around the same cost as the non supers. We generally don’t recommend non supers at all because they’re quite a significant performance loss without the saving to back it up.

The 2080ti never got a newer version but has always been king of the hill.

I have an AMD Ryzen 5 3600x and an RTX 2070 super. I saw that you recommended the AOC Q27G2U BK for the RTX 2070 super. I am a bit worried as that monitor is not on the compatability list for nvidia. A search on the internet seems to show a few people have problems with screens going blank using nvidia and that monitor

@cornish365 The monitors on the compatibility list on the NVIDIA site are ones that have been tested by NVIDIA and so can be called "G-Sync Compatible"....however, not being on that list doesn't mean it doesn't work..my AOC monitor is not on the list and the G-Sync runs flawlessly on it

Any Freesync screen will work with both Nvidia and AMD GPU's, Gsync screens will only work with Nvidia cards.

The only ones listed as "GSync compatible" on nvidia's website are ones that have specifically been tested by them and deemed to be worthy, these are paid for tests by the manufacturer, and just clever branding. Just because it isn't specified as Gsync compatible doesn't mean it won't work. Any freesync monitor will work with an NVidia card.

They are the cheapest models available, basically the same specs, just different manufacturers. The LG has better brightness.

If it were up to me, I’d go for the LG, the ASUS is more expensive just because it’s ASUs, and LG make phenomenal panels.

Thanks, glad it’s helpful, it takes a surprising amount of time to do one listing and I’ve not been able to give the forum the time I would have liked to recently but I do pop back here every now and again to update. There are a few new monitors being released over the next couple of weeks more online with the RTX3000 series power, so I’ll do my best to get those added as they come up.

It’s an exciting time for monitors due to the 3000 series changing the game, we’re gonna be seeing some crazy premium panels and I have no doubt that prices for 4k 144hz will start to come down (as we’re already seeing with the @£800 ones)

Your right the release of the 3000 series is very exciting and will spark an advancement in the monitor market to keep up with the new graphics cards capabilities. £800 for a 4K 144hz monitor is so much value for money you could spend that on a sofa or my friends wife would spend that on curtains !!! I think you always get such a big bang for your buck when buying tech!!!!!!

Sorry I see what you mean , your right. I always put my foot in it 🥵, it's a life long habit of mine, plus I then proceed to dig myself into a deeper hole trying to get out of the one I first unintentionally dug !
