Looking For Advice

Also I've noticed a lot of builds having a smaller SSD and then an HDD as secondary storage, rather than this suggested build with 1TB SDD. Is that a better way to go?

This is personal preference but good advice practice. Some recommend two drives as what you do is on the smaller fast drive you your operating system and applications. Then on larger drive, can still be a fast one, put your games and files etc.

This way then when you need to do a clean install of windows you don’t lose all your files / game downloads etc.

Steveyg suggested such a build earlier but you seem to have missed that.

Normally if budget allows, what we would normally spec is as follows:

1TB HDD such as the Barracuda for general storage
A very fast 500GB M.2 such as the 980 for the system drive
A fast 1TB M.2 such as the 670p for the games drive.

The reasoning behind the above is you store general files that don't benefit from fast storage, such as documents, videos etc on the HDD, then the really fast M.2 gives great boot & program loading times, and finally the fast M.2 still gives great loading times for games and also means should you have to reinstall the OS you don't have to reinstall all your games

Oh those wife things do cause problems................

Tell me about it. I added to the mortgage to get these windows done, wooden shutters for when it’s finished and decorating etc, then added a bit more thinking I might get £2-£3k for desktop set up. Nope, a week after they finish the windows, the roof is now scheduled to be redone at a cost of £6k so I lose out there…nag nag nag it’s leaking nag nag nag.

Well I've just discussed it with her and she agrees it's better to spend a bit more so we will get few years use before needing to upgrade so my budget is now £1500 for the PC itself which is pretty close to Steveyg's suggested build £1484.

I think the G5 would be sufficient enough to be honest.
Also if you can hold out till nov 30th for the monitor amazon usally have some cracking deals on monitors black friday sale ! For gaming I would stick with the 5600x over the 3700x 5600x is newer chip 3700x is last generation

If you were looking at going 8 core, then I'd suggest 5800x but this would need better motherboard and better cooling, which means a bigger budget

Hi again, think I have settled on this build thanks to suggestions from a few guys on here. Would be grateful for any further feedback before ordering. Looking at the G5 monitor just for information and my planned use is mentioned in my original post. Thanks again.

Ok, just a couple of little tweaks, you didn't need the 570 motherboard with the 5600x, so I've reduced it to the the 550, which has freed up some cash to give you a really fast boot drive & couple of quid for a coffee

Almost finalised but can I ask if there's much difference apart from price between the 512 GB INTEL 670p and the 500GB Samsung 980 PRO?

Speed (by around 3x in some scenarios) and reliability (185TBW for the Intel vs 300TBW for the Samsung). The Intel is kind of mid-range, decent but unexciting, whereas the Samsung is just about top-line (the Seagate Firecuda 530 is possibly a tiny bit ahead -- greater endurance but slightly lower raw speed). Honestly, they're both fine, but for the difference in price, I personally would go for the Samsung.

Samsung 980 Pro is a Gen4 M.2 so it can make use of the coming Smart Access Memory and it's significantly faster
