The USB 3.2 Gen1 front panel connector (U32G1_12) goes to the top panel in this Lian Li case. I have clicked it out and back in again. Is this the one you mean?
front bottom corner of the motherboard, connector with the red wire and motherboard speaker on it

You've done a very thorough job, as you say, get some sleep and have a look after, sometimes you'll see things from a different angle, but if nothing leaps out, unfortunately, it's likely a call to PCS.

All sorted.

Thank you to everyone who spent time and effort helping me out last night. It turns out that the problem was caused by the nut behind the keyboard. I built my own PC some time ago (?15yrs ago). But for the last 10 years I have only used an iMac and laptops - these all just have one button to turn them on. So I thought turning on the power supply was sufficient to boot my new machine. When working through the various plugs to make sure they were properly sited I noticed that one was called something like "power reset". I then realised that there was a little button on the top of the machine. Doh! I am very embarrassed. It works flawlessly.
And using this link https://win10.guru/windows-10-digital-license-how-to-transfer/ that was referred to in this forum thread https://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/foru...-to-windows-10-for-free-still-relevant.65782/ I was able to flawlessly transfer the licence from my now defunct bootcamp installation of Windows.

Oh! Ah, well, these things happen – and you do now have a very good idea of how your computer is put together.

I once bought a food processor and failed to get it to work. I sent it back for repairs. A fortnight later it came back with a note that read "Seems to be in working order. We wonder if the customer hadn't found the power switch."

I had not found the power switch.

My normal one is "where are my car keys? WHERE ARE MY CAR KEYS?" To which the answer normally comes: "You're on the motorway doing 70mph: have you checked if they're in the ignition?"

and if they are not in the ignition you start wondering how you are going 70mph

Many years ago I unlocked my Mini, got in and then had trouble getting the ignition key to turn. I then noticed that I had acquired some fluffy dice hanging from the rear view mirror and various items that I didn’t own on the back seat. It turned out to be a different Mini in the same horrible brown colour. The door key worked, but the ignition key didn’t.

Thank you to everyone who advised on my choices for this build. I can now see that the choices advised were good ones. I will paste at the foot of this post the final specs (if you do the method that gives the live link it doesn't show subsequent updates you made so I have cut and pasted the order that shows the changes).

I have run the Puget benchmark program for Premiere Pro and the sytem behaved very well. Neither the GPU nor the CPU temps went above 70°C despite all 32 threads running. And I had expected the fans to make more noise than they do, on heavy load. All very nice. Just had to post a pic of all those threads:

I don't think the ASUS® ROG STRIX X570-F GAMING (USB 3.2 Gen 2, PCIe 4.0) - ARGB Ready! motherboard has bluetooth? Or does it? Not a problem - it would just involve one cable fewer to attach the 2.0 sound.

No, it doesn't. Bluetooth almost always comes together with WiFi. It wouldn't be difficult to add, but for audio I'd recommend against it if you have the option: it adds significant latency. I'd stick with wires unless that's a major problem.
