Just ordered the most expensive laptop I never thought I'd need.

Hi everyone I'm Clint, Retired and spending the kid's inheritance.
I want to get into AI image and video processing.
I looked at SAAS businesses but decided I might as well get something I can run the programs locally on or the monthly subscriptions will soon add up.
I should add that I won't be playing any games, This machine will be solely for AI photo and video production/editing
Anyway, I was having a tough time getting the spec I wanted, I wanted to go the AMD route as I don't trust Intel after the debacle with their 13th and 14th gen CPU's
I also wanted an Nvidia GPU because of the Cuda cores which are required of most of the processing software's, I also wanted at least 16GB of Vram.
Then I discovered PCSpecialist and have placed an order for a laptop using the AMD AMD Ryzen 9 9955HX3D 16-Core Processor and I have selected the RTX 5090 with 24GB of Vram.
To go with this I intend to add 96GB of fast ram, unfortunately I wanted to add this to my spec at the time of ordering but, as they were out of stock, the system wouldn't let me place the order despite the fact that my laptop will not be available until the end of April when the GPU is released.
I asked in the online chat if they couldn't simply put some ram aside for my build when it comes in but was told I would just have to hope the ram was in stock when it came to build the laptop which seems a bit odd to be honest.
I could have placed my order when the ram arrives but it is not expected for 10 days and I wanted to get my order in the queue so I ordered the laptop with the minimal 8GB which I will replace with 96GB purchased locally when I get the laptop.
I realise a desktop will give a better performance but I don't have the space for a desktop system desk etc.
I am not completely new to the I.T. business having set up and successfully built up my own local I.S.P business back in the 90's, remember the days of dial up? :)
I have built many P.C's and have a Masters degree in new media.
Anyway, just wanted to say hello and introduce myself and tell my story of how I came to be on this forum.

It's probably the most powerful laptop money can buy.

Did you order the water-cooler as well? All that power can throttle without some extra cooling.
No I didn't. I'm hoping it won't be needed as it will only be used for AI video and image production so hopefully won't be pushed to it's limit and if it is it will only be for short periods of time. I'll keep an eye on the temps though. :)

It needs to be used with this chassis, it unquestionably WILL thermal throttle even in normal loads let alone AI and editing.

Thanks, I thought the laptop version was throttled down from the desktop version so likely wouldn't need it.
It has almost 300 shaders disabled and then is heavily frequency limited and of course power limited.

But that system will throttle both on the GPU and CPU without the cooler. It's not a laptop, so not designed to be portable, it's designed to be always plugged in to both power and the liquid cooler, without that performance will be heavily capped.

Or do you just mean it's not the kind of laptop you'd carry about with you, I won't be taking it out and it will always be plugged in but it will, most times, be on my lap with a two fan cooling pad.

It's not a laptop.

There are various styles of "Laptop" esque devices, from low powered netbooks, up to DTRs

This is a DTR which is short for Desktop Replacement, they're not designed to be portable, they're designed to be static and connected to power but for people who don't have the space for a desktop.

DTRs have desktop grade processors, as such there is very little battery life, they're pretty heavy, and will require the watercooler and being plugged in.

Without being plugged in, they're heavily power limited and performance is just really enough to do basic office tasks. The GPU especially will be very much power limited running on battery.

I tested mine with and without water.

It almost sounds like a vacuum cleaner if you try running Microsoft Flight Simulator without the water-cooler. And of course that's while throttling to stop it melting. Your AI video production will very likely do the same.

Light to moderate workloads are OK though but the fan does still make some noise.

That said I run on water ALL the time and it remains pretty quiet.

I hear they will always run hot but the cooler will increase the performance so I'm guessing I won't do any damage by running without the water cooler to see how it performs for me? it will be on a laptop, dual fan, cooling base

The liquid cooler itself simply prevents thermal throttling, allowing you to use it at full power as designed.
Using the laptop without an external cooler causes no immediate damage, but prolonged overheating is not the ideal way to maintain a laptop in my opinion, and it surely shortens its lifespan.

Keep in mind that you can make changed to the build right up until it's in testing. Just in case you want to keep an eye on the RAM situation and consider the cooler prior to receipt.
