Is this Spec too Much for my needs

Hi Everyone,

I am wanting to move over to the PC gaming world from the PS5. I will mainly be using the PC for gaming, however I also do a lot of digital art as well as photo editing.

I play a variety of different games, and I am looking to build a PC which will last a very long time, as well as be able to run the largest GPU intensive games without absolutely maxing the machine out. The game I play the most is Warzone, however I also spend a lot of time playing other AAA games such as:
  • Warzone
  • The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.
  • Elden Ring
  • Last of Us 2
  • Resident evil Village
  • Cyberpunk 2077
  • Horizon Zero Dawn
  • Red Dead Redemption 2
  • Final Fantasy

I’d be planning to play the RPG titles at least at 1440p at 60 FPS but ideally 60 FPS at 4K resolution. As for the monitor, I will likely go with something that can keep up with the PC build. I initially had in mind the Alienware 27 gaming monitor - (AW2721D) as it has very high refresh rates, while also 1440p resolution. Open to suggestions for the monitor. I dont think a monitor over 27 inches is for me, and as long as the minimum refresh rates are around 144 or higher, that should be good for me.

I am looking to make this a long term investment as the last time I purchased a low-mid range PC was back in 2009, so I would like something to stand the test of time (Relatively speaking)

It will be a bit of a treat to myself, and I am happy to spend a fair amount on a decent set up, while also keeping everything reasonable when it comes to price/performance. I would be aiming for a budget of ~£2,000 - £3,200. Currently GPU costs are very high, but with the new Zen 4 and RTX 4000 series around the corner, I hope these prices will come down a bit.

My current choices below:
(let me know if you think its a bit over the top, or I could change the components out to save cost but keep performance)

Case
ASUS TUF Gaming GT501 RGB Tempered Glass Mid Tower Case - White
The style, colour and design attract me to this case. Good set of I/O ports, with the exception of USB type C port, but I can live without that.

Processor (CPU)
Intel® Core™ i7 12-Core Processor i7-12700KF (3.6GHz) 25MB Cache
  • Good processor for gaming, or so I am told. I will be having this also overclocked to increase performance
Motherboard
ASUS ROG Maximus Z690 Hero Motherboard
  • Recommended for top end gaming PCs, however if a cheaper motherboard is available which provided similar performance, happy to consider.
Memory (RAM)
Kingston FURY Beast 32GB (2x 16GB) 5200MHz DDR5 RAM - Black
  • Most games these days recommend 16GB RAM, but how long will that recommendation last for until they need more RAM. I have opted for 32GB, to consider the potential that increased needs of Games and software also increases.
Graphics Card
Gigabyte GeForce RTX 3080 Ti GAMING OC 12GB Graphics Card
  • I found this to be a hard choice to make. A lot of different brand names for the same model RTX 3080 Ti, went for Gigabyte as I know that brand and some reviews rate it highly.
  • Again, probably chose the 3080 ti version over the 3080 mainly due to future proofing and some reviews giving it better overall score when it comes to 4K gaming.
1st M.2 SSD Drive
Seagate FireCuda 530 1TB M.2 Gen4 NVMe SSD (up to 7300MB/s Read | 6000MB/s Write)
  • PCIe Gen 4 boot drive with quick read/write speeds
  • 1TB should be more than enough, however also conflicted if a smaller drive would be better for boot up and have a 2nd SSD drive for storage etc
Power Supply
ASUS ROG Strix 850W 80 PLUS Gold Fully-Modular PSU Power Supply
  • Looking for a quiet power supply as my last one sounded like a rocket taking off.
Power Cable
1 x 1.5 Metre UK Power Cable (Kettle Lead)

Processor Cooling
Corsair iCue H150i Elite Capellix RGB 360mm AIO CPU Liquid Cooler
  • Seems like a reliable AIO that would hopefully serve me for years to come.
Thermal Paste
Thermal Grizzly Hydronaut High Performance Thermal Paste

Operating System
Windows 11 Home 64 Bit
Operating System Language
United Kingdom - English Language

I'd really appreciate any feedback and suggestions for improvements that anyone has to offer. Thanks!

The above doesn't look like a PCS build. As this forum is owned by PCS we can only comment on PCS builds. If you're looking for advice on a self build I would recommend an open forum such as Tom's Hardware. Alternatively we can also try and spec you a PCS build if that is something that you're interested in.

Hiya, these forums are for PCSpecialist builds only I'm afraid, we can't comment on competitors builds or self builds, you may want to check out Toms Hardware which is an open forum.

Hi Mr Wilson, thank you for getting back to me so quickly. I apologise, I was not aware as it was a friend who said I should ask on PCS forum. If you could spec a PCS build taking into consideration my requirements, that would be amazing.

Kind Regards

Happy to help you put together a PCS build.

Just to condense your initial post:
You're looking for a PC to handle gaming, digital art, and photo editing.
You have a budget of £3200, and you want to include a monitor in that budget too.

If you could please confirm the above we can get cracking :)

Yes to the above. Thank you. Monitor I was maybe factoring outside of the budget, but more on advice to what monitor will bring out the best of the pc.

The monitor and the GPU are closely related, we'll pick out a monitor that pairs well with the GPU. With this sort of budget 4k is definitely achievable.
What would be your total budget for PC and monitor, just so we know what we're working towards? Also, is there a reason why you think a monitor >27 inches wouldn't be for you? I would be looking at a 32 inch 4k display such as the MSI MPG321UR-QD for your requirements, as a strong performer from both a gaming and productivity standpoint.

ideally I’d like to spend no more than 600-£700 on a monitor and a max of £3200 on the pc. I currently have a 27 inch and feel a 32 would be too much, and I was maybe in the future going to add a 2nd monitor. Space being limited on my desk 2x 27inches would be a perfect fit.

Paired with this 28 inch 4k 144hz Samsung Monitor we can get you a cracking PC and monitor for just over £3.2k!

Case
CORSAIR iCUE 5000X RGB MID TOWER GAMING CASE
Processor (CPU)
Intel® Core™ i7 12-Core Processor i7-12700K (3.6GHz) 25MB Cache Solid CPU for your gaming and editing needs

32GB Corsair VENGEANCE RGB PRO DDR4 3600MHz (2 x 16GB) No benefit to DDR5 at the moment, you're paying a heavy premium for little to no performance gain
Graphics Card
10GB NVIDIA GEFORCE RTX 3080 - HDMI, DP, LHR Will smash out 4k gaming comfortably. No point in paying an extra £500+ for the 3080ti which might net you 10% more frames. Better to put that money towards a future GPU upgrade.
1st M.2 SSD Drive
500GB SAMSUNG 980 PRO M.2, PCIe NVMe (up to 6900MB/R, 5000MB/W) Fast primary drive for OS and programs
1st M.2 SSD Drive
2TB SEAGATE FIRECUDA 530 GEN 4 PCIe NVMe (up to 7300MB/R, 6900MB/W) Fast, large drive for games and projects. Games are getting bigger and bigger so this covers you to have all your titles installed at the same time.
Power Supply
CORSAIR 1000W RMx SERIES™ MODULAR 80 PLUS® GOLD, ULTRA QUIET 1000W is the new standard. The 4090 FE has been confirmed to draw 600W by itself, compared to the 350W of the 3090, so a beefy power supply is needed in anticipation of future GPU generations.
