How to choose a monitor for cinematic games?

Hello everyone,

I've got an Inferno L2 on order. Obviously there's a run on monitors at the moment so with basically nothing in stock I went for the Iiyama ProLite B2791QSU-B1 since it would get me started and make a decent secondary monitor when I work out what primary I want to get.

I've read the (excellent) gaming monitors guide, but feel I still don't know enough to make an informed decision.

I don't really play online FPS games - the games I've put the most time into are Skyrim, X3, Mount & Blade and Total War so I want a monitor that will make these and similar games look epic. This leads me to think that high contrast ratio and wide colour gamut are more important to me than response time. The general advice is that VA panels have better contrast, while IPS panels have richer colour. Since I'm not sure which is more important to me I'm a bit stuck.

Can anyone suggest a good 1440p monitor for me? Budget would be happy with something in the £400-500 range, could stretch to £550. Screen size of 27-31" seems to be the sweet spot but I'd consider others.

Above would be my choice also. IPS can technically be better looking but the HDR should scratch that itch.

Another thing to think of, most decent tvs have good lag control and decent HDR and the likes, if you just want it to play games on that's what I do (got a Panasonic oled next to me I play on and test on with decent grey to grey responce)

Worth a think about if its mainly for gaming.

Just seen this: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B08669WZRH

It's not available just yet but the HDR600 spec caught my attention.
That's incredible value for the specs, it's actually 1440p 240Hz which is quite rare anyway, let alone at that price, would expect more in the region of £600..... I'd say grab it when you can, excellent monitor. You can't go wrong with Samsung Gaming panels either, they're amongst the best.

Ordered. Had planned to wait a little longer before hitting the button on an extra monitor, but definitely didn't want to miss out on a £100 discount on a spec like that.

It's only 3 weeks before estimated stock availability also, I reckon at that price, they'll sell out extremely quick, that's just insanely good value.

Furthermore, if you're happy with the 1440p resolution, that monitor will give you room to grow with updated GPU's also, as with a RTX 2070 you'll only be pushing about 100 - 120fps in heavy titles.
