If you're spending a bit more on the storage I would opt for the 500gb 980 pro as the primary, with the 1TB Intel 670 as the secondary. Makes more sense to have a faster primary drive.

No that looks spot on. I think you will be very happy. It's set up for a high end GPU as well so if you ever wanted to up the capacity for gaming, all you need to do is drop in an appropriate GPU :)

Rather than upgrading the board, if you have spare cash, I would personally put it into the GPU as the 1650 is pretty weak by todays standards.

What monitor are you pairing this with, what make and model?

Gaming wont be a priority for me which is why I picked a weak GPU, I'll probably game max twice a week.

I guess it would depend on what the intensive programming tasks are!

It's definitely a good PC for general programming tasks, e.g. web development and stuff. If you're compiling the Linux kernel three times a day, less so. In either case there are things I'd tweak, such as the cooler and storage.

I'll be using Virtual Machine, PHP Storm, Kali Linux, Ubuntu, Github etc. I'm going for the software developer role and the PC will mainly be used for general use as well as coding.

Ok, it doesn't sound like you're fully sure of what you need.

I'll highlight the reasons for the questions:

If you're doing any kind of virtual work, you want high core count and high RAM as each VM will require dedicated threads and RAM. Intel sucks for VMs because of the way the CPU is designed in a big/little config. The E cores (efficiency) are simply Atom cores, as soon as offload any kind of virtualisation process to these cores, performance is gonna tank. So it's only the P cores that have any relevance. As such Ryzen would be a far better option

And then you need to imagine what kinds of VM's you're going be running. Will they be Linux or Windows as that will affect resources requires for the OS, then what are they hosting? You need to factor in if you're doing professional domain level programming, or end user? If business level, then you'd want secondary VM's with business platforms running to test compatiblity with your code alongside whatever professional environments the company uses. Etc etc etc.

If this is a new role for you, you want to overspec because what you think your requirements are now, I guarantee will change and you want to be prepared for anything that comes your way. Don't think of your requirements now, think of 7 years down the line.
