Heya! A couple things we could change here. A question first, what monitor will you be uisng with this PC? Either make and model or resolution and refresh rate would be ideal!

Hi, I'm planning to purchase the MSI - PRO MP242V 23.8 INCH IPS FHD MM HDMI monitor.

Thanks for the info! I'm honestly a little unsure of the requirements of programming so here's two builds that focus on seperate areas depending on what you're looking for. Both are slightly over budget, but I'd really recommend the stretch if you can.

This first one is the more balanced of the two, it's more focused on gaming which means I'd also recommend a better monitor. The AOC 24G2U is our go to monitor for 1080p 144hz specs (the specs you'd want for this GPU)
Case
LIAN LI LANCOOL 215 GAMING CASE Much higher quality, better airflow case that'll keep components cool
Processor (CPU)
AMD Ryzen 5 5600X Six Core CPU (3.7GHz-4.6GHz/35MB CACHE/AM4) A good allround CPU that better fits this budget
Motherboard
ASUS® TUF GAMING B550-PLUS WiFi (DDR4, USB 3.2, 6Gb/s) - ARGB Ready!
Memory (RAM)
16GB Corsair VENGEANCE DDR4 3200MHz (2 x 8GB) Due to the CAS Latency of the Corsair RAM, 3200mhz is the ideal choice
Graphics Card
8GB AMD RADEON™ RX 6600 - HDMI, DP - DX® 12 A considerably better GPU for gaming, performs just behind the 3060 for about £100 less
1st M.2 SSD Drive
512GB INTEL® 670p M.2 NVMe PCIe SSD (up to 3000MB/sR | 1600MB/sW) Swapped both the drives for NVME SSD's, they're considerably faster for not much more cash
1st M.2 SSD Drive
1TB PCS PCIe M.2 SSD (2200 MB/R, 1500 MB/W)
Power Supply
CORSAIR 750W TXm SERIES™ SEMI-MODULAR 80 PLUS® GOLD, ULTRA QUIET
Power Cable
1 x 1 Metre UK Power Cable (Kettle Lead)
Processor Cooling
CoolerMaster Hyper 212 (120mm) Fan CPU Cooler Black Edition The 5600X will be fine with the stock cooler, you could remove this and save ~£35
Thermal Paste
STANDARD THERMAL PASTE FOR SUFFICIENT COOLING The standard paste will be fine. I've also removed the extra fans, the 215 comes with 2 large front ones and one on the rear
Sound Card
ONBOARD 6 CHANNEL (5.1) HIGH DEF AUDIO (AS STANDARD)
Network Card
10/100/1000 GIGABIT LAN PORT

This 2nd one is more focused on CPU and RAM power, if programming requires that. We've stepped back to the 1650 for this which will be servicable for the monitor you've mentioned. Although gaming at 1080p 60hz is not a great experience cmpared to what's available

The case is arguably the the most important piece of the PC. You want a case that has good airflow, which will allow components to keep cool. If you have a bad airflow case it'll raise temps which will lose you performance and potentially shorten the life of your components.

The 215 is a good choice because it has a huge mesh front with 2 large fans to push air through the system then one at the rear to pull the hot air out the back, as well as mesh at the top to allow the hot air to naturally rise out the top. The RGB can be turned off if it's not to your liking, alternatively, if you're looking for something a bit more understated, the Corsair 4000D Airflow is a great choice.

I wouldn't really. The market is all kinds of screwed up with the GPU shortages so prices are really inflated. £1350 is already pretty low end in terms of budget these days. If I had to recommend something I guess it'd look something like this? The 1650 still seems to be an acceptable gaming card but it's quickly becoming the minimum requirement for more demanding games so I'd expect it needing to be replaced sooner rather than later. You could go for a 10/11400F for slightly more performance and slightly less cash, but the 11th gen platform is floored in a number of ways that could limit future upgradability so not a move I'd actively recommend if you intend to keep the PC for a while.

I’d reckon a good 6-8 years with a couple of GPU upgrades and maybe a mid life CPU swap.

I’m aware we’re already a way over the original budget but with that spec, if you can spend a little more cash, I’d really recommend swapping the motherboard to the STRIX B550 and adding the AX200 WiFi card (if you need WiFi), especially if programming is particularly CPU intensive, as well as swapping to the RMx850W PSU for better GPU upgradability. It’s a bit of extra cash now but it’ll save a lot later as well as tonne of hassle (swapping a PSU or motherboard can be a pretty involved job)

Has your budget changed as that's substantially more expensive?

We can only work to a budget, if you let us know the MAXIMUM you're willing to spend, then we can configure something.

But that build isn't suitable, you have an integrated GPU when you've got a dedicated as well which is compromising the platform, aside from other issues.

The 5700G is a far inferior CPU to the 5800X and really a CPU that doesn't make much sense. With a budget like this you're after as much value as possible, this means RGB RAM, while looking nice, adds a bit to the cost. You'll want to make sure you're 500GB drive is faster than your 1TB drive and with 2 Intels the larger one is currently faster (hence the PCS drive selection on my previous posts) The H100x is a couple of generations prior to current and a bit outdated. The Corsair AIO's come with high quality thermal paste pre-applied so the MX4 isn't necessary here.

There's a lot of things I'd change here. My recommendations above would make the spec look like this- admittedly. I didn't realise it'd add quite that much to the cost, so my apologies for that.

The other option you have now I think about it, is the new intel Z690 platform. The i5 12600K performs on par/ ahead of the 5800X for most CPU reliant tasks and the 12600K is only a small percentage behind in gaming performance. It also comes to less than the 5800X system so seems like a pretty smart idea to me.

I think the budget was initially £1350 which we worked to, they then enquired about a PC at the £1000 range and swapped back to the £1350 area. The build above is about £1400 which is yes more expensive but I wouldn't say substantially so over the £1350 budget.

(to my reckoning anyway)

Apologies, didn't read back over the thread, just saw the 1000 build.

I quite like the i5 processor choice as it is better compared to Ryzen 5800x in most departments. From the builds you have provided, what do you think is the best one in terms of longevity of the pc and overall high end specs?

It's difficult to know really. Historically Intel hasn't been the best at the amount of generations they support with a Motherboard, but after being completly showed up by AMD last gen, they've added a tonne of extra pins which implies they'll have better long term longevity this time round. As well as that, AMD is right at the end of the AM4 lifeline so we'll likely only get 1 or maybe no new CPU's that are supported on the AMD platform.

TL: DR: It's difficult to know but it's most likely Intel.

I've decided to go with the Intel setup, which monitor would you recommend? In terms of programming and video editing, the higher the resolution the better. Also need to take the amount of hertz into account for when I game.

With the current GPU, for gaming you wouldn't want anything above 1080p. Considering high hz, the AOC 24G2U would be my recommendation- it's a well reviewed 1080p 144hz gaming monitor and with an IPS panel, the colours should be good for your video editing needs
