First Gaming PC

Thanks for clarifying. I have seen others say anything below a 2060 isn't ideal for VR but then PCS says the 1660 cards are VR Ready so I wanted to double check. I haven't found enough VR games I want to play to justify getting an Oculus yet so it will definitely be a while. Would I have a better experience running an AMD GPU with AMD FreeSync than a NVIDIA GPU or does it not matter too much?
As far as I'm aware, them being VR ready means they're able to run it, but the 1660 Super is a lower performing card than the 2060, so if we don't recommend VR on a 2060, I definitely wouldn't on a 1660 Super. If you think you're a while off, I don't think it's worth worrying about too much. If and when you get into VR you'll need a new GPU anyway, so I'd look into it closer to the time.

Honestly I'm not too sure about the AMD Freesync and NVIDIA G-Sync, I have seen that it's possible to get G-Sync on a Free Sync monitor? AOC has this guide on how to do it. But, I'm not too clued up on it so I'll leave it to someone else.

Here are my updated specs. I'm looking at the 1650 Super too but I'm unsure of whether this can deliver decent fps on medium/high graphics settings. I'm also considering having a 2TB HDD instead of 1TB although I'm not totally clued up on drive types and how they differ from one another yet. Is this a suitable build for 1080p 144hz gaming with a decent upgrade path? I can't see myself going any higher than an RTX 3070 in the future but you never know.

Apologies for all the questions. I just want to be 100% sure I'm buying the correct system for my purposes.

This looks like a pretty decent spec to me! You could save some money by going for the Lian Li 215 case as it has a better fan layout than the 400D airflow and is £11 cheaper. Swapping to the WiFi motherboard and removing the card will save another few £. I've also removed the anti-virus as it's been known to cause issues in the past. These changes would cover the upgrade to the 2TB HDD you asked about without an increase in price (price with it comes to £1,240). The stock CPU cooler will perform well enough to cool the 5600X but if a stretch to a 240mm AIO cooler could be made, I'd highly recommend it.

When it comes to the 1650S vs 1660S, personally I'd recommend the 1660S as it seems to give an average 15-20% frame increase which will allow you to run your games at those higher graphics settings (benchmarks here), but I also understand that the extra £120 is a lot of money. Maybe someone else will be able to give you a more decisive answer 😂

In your spec, you have an M.2 SSD and a HDD. The M.2 is more expensive but super fast storage, this would be used for your Windows OS, Programs and some of your games. The HDD is much slower but large capacity storage, this is normally used for general files such as documents, photos or music that don't require being on a faster storage drive. If you also find yourself struggling for space on the SSD, you could also put the games on the HDD but loading times will be longer. For your HDD question, the 2TB HDD is only about a tenner more for double the storage, so is definetly worth considering if you can make the stretch.

The future upgradability of this system will be good with the 850W RMx PSU, you could happily put a 3070 (or equivalent) GPU and it would still run perfectly comfortably.

I'll go for the 1660S to be on the safe side, as well as the 2TB storage. I was told I'd get better Wifi performance from having the seperate card as well as bluetooth which I think I'll need because I have wireless headphones so I'll probably have to keep that in. I'll consider swapping the case though. Thank you very much for the advice.

Godlike
I've found a monitor that's G-Sync compatible as well as 1080p and 144hz. The reviews seem to vary but it has 4 and a half stars overall. Would this work well with my build or are there better options under £250?

That monitor has a TN panel, which has quite low image quality and viewing angles. TN panels are fairly outdated now, their only main use being with competitive gamers as they boast the best response times and refresh rates.
IPS and VA panels offer much better viewing quality and in recent years the technology has improved to get them to hit those all important 144hz refresh rates.
The AOC I suggested earlier will be G-Sync Compatible and I would recommend it over the HP monitor. @JUNI0R also suggested a few other strong picks for around the £200 mark.

You’re better off going for a FreeSync monitor as it’s compatible with both Nvidia and AMD technology. If you get a G-Sync monitor, you’re restricting yourself to just Nvidia for the foreseeable, I wouldn’t want to back myself into that particular corner personally 🙂

Thanks for the info as I wasn't sure on the panels. My only opposition with the AOC monitor is purely aesthetic. I'm looking for something that's all one colour, preferably black/dark grey. I prefer a minimalist look, especially when it comes to gaming computers.

Totally fair! I wasn't aware of the bluetooth headset so it'd be pointless changing then having to buy a BT dongle 😂

I recommended a G5 for the 1440 144hz build a while back but no 1080p 144hz ones, well not on this thread anyway! 2 recommendations we make a lot are the AOC 24G2U and the MSI Optix G241, both are great 1080p 144hz IPS (meaning bright colours and wide viewing angles) monitors for £200 online.

Just to double check, is this the same one? It appears to be slightly bigger.

Yup! That's the MSI Optix G241. Both the MSI and the HP you linked have the same size screen, (24 inch) it might just be the perspective of the photo?
Ah I see, I was wondering because the one in the link you provided said 23.8 inches. Obviously there's not much of a difference between that and 24 inches so maybe that's just how Curry's have labelled it.

Hi again everyone. I've just gone to order (took me a couple of days because I had to get my savings out) and the Corsair Airflow 4000D is now out of stock which is just typical 😂

I've contacted PCS to see if they know when it'll be back in stock. If I go ahead and order anyway, which would be the best substiution, the Lian Li Lancool 215 or the Corsair Airflow 5000D? I prefer the look of the Corsair cases but the first one is tempting because of the price.

Those are two very different cases at very varying prices! The 5000D is a very large more minimal case that has the potential for great airflow if you were to add a few fans. The 215 is a more standard size and with the large ARGB fans on the front- it's a great choice too. Personally, for a case closer to the price of the 4000D, I'd recommend the 220T, it's a great case that comes with 3 high quality included ARGB fans which will provide great airflow. The RGB can be turned off using Corsair's iCUE software if it's something you're not a fan of. If you have the budget, you could go for the 5000D with a few extra fans, but that does add up to be £51 more than the 220T which, for reference, is roughly the same cost as a 512GB M.2 SSD or a 240mm AIO

Thank you for the quick response. Is it possible to turn off the RGB in the Lian Li Lancool case or change the colours at least? and would the extra fans with the 5000D case be an absolute necessity? If so, I'll probably go for one of the others as I've stretched my budget a lot already.

You would really want the extra fans in the 5000D airflow, they are designed with that expectation. The Lian Li 215 is an absolute show stealer of a case, at that price. You could always just buy the 4000D yourself and have it sent to PCS though - £80 from amazon, but once again... ideally you’d want to add extra fans

Dear Corsair, remove those two fans or add a tonne more. They're super conflicting for building a good PC Sincerly, everyone 😂

Thanks for the info. I'm going to go for the Lian Li 215 or the Corsair iCUE 220T. I think I prefer the look of the latter but if the Lian Li one performs better, I'll go for that.

That looks like a pretty solid build, it should last you the best part of a decade with the occasional GPU upgrade 🙂👍
