Yeah, not the best start, but I am grateful to actually have my PC and tasty G card while so many others are still waiting, and hopefully my day gets better from here with it all.

Spec is:

View attachment 23696

I probably did not spend as much time researching as I could, as I was in a bit of a rush (and I'm no expert), but basically just ordered a present day update to everything my old system had, as it has served me long and well.

It's insanely powerful, just not ideal for gaming I would suggest. It's not what I would have gone for but it'll definitely do a fine job :)

I would definitely leave the front open when using intensively though, perhaps even consider removing it if it doesn't look too unsightly.

Im assuming its for things like CAD and heavy video editing type tasks?

It is a gaming and work PC.
Which bits are not ideal for gaming? Will something on it let me down? Or is it the whole AMD v Intel thing you mean? I tried to future proof it a little, as I did with my last one, which seemed to work out well.
I'd be interested to hear your thoughts as I always welcome any knowledge.

The choice of chip (18 core), being Intel plays a role here too.
The RAM speed probably isnt ideal for the CPU either, Intel have 2933MHz as the highest speed listed for it so im not sure how well thats gonna go down in terms of stability, from what i've seen Intel chips are not as fond of high speed RAM as AMD is.

I'm kinda stabbing in the dark here on that though, people with more/better knowledge will hopefully correct me or fill in the gaps for me lol

I would of thought its a total beast at stuff like video editing and hardcore number crunching though

With gaming there are 2 simplified basics to consider.....

More powerful GPU = more frames
Faster CPU core = more frames

The CPU & motherboard choice is aimed at intensive multi-core compute operations. As such, without serious fettling (overclocking with LN2), it's not going to perform as well for gaming as even the most basic of CPUs (Obvious comparison would be the 5600X). AMD vs Intel does come into it, in quite a big way, but even rigidly sticking with Intel you would have a far more powerful gaming machine with the likes of the 10900k

Single core performance of the 10980XE is 4.6Ghz - Cost circa £900
Single core performance of the 5600X is 4.6Ghz (Although reportedly hitting 4.9-5ghz quite often) - Cost circa £330

The X299 platform is the oldest Intel platform there is and, unfortunately, doesn't offer an upgrade path for being future proof. There aren't a great many options on intel for actual future options, hence most people would recommend AMD (Myself included and I'm on Intel myself right now).

With the sort of budget you had for your build you could have had the highest performing gaming system available. Your system is currently extremely high end for compute performance but very much middling for gaming performance with no real future expansion options (save for the GPU).

Your system won't perform poorly, not by a long shot, but it's not very well optimised for your uses when you look at the investment made. You could have bought 2 very high end systems 4 years apart that would both perform significantly better than this one system (Considering the future proofing analogy).

I believe the controller won’t allow it over the 2933mhz, but it will be set in the bios for that speed anyway, so there shouldn’t be an issue.

Ooo, didn't realise about the RAM speed, I will keep my eye on that, thanks.

Wow, that all sounds so bad, especially the part about it not performing as well as even the most basic of CPUs. I chose Intel due to a history of the games I play performing better and more reliably with it and with having no issues with my previous CPU and the one before that.

I was so excited to get it today too, even through all the wet mess, and now it looks like I have a lemon on top of that...

Very Sad Face.

Its not a lemon...it will still do what you want it to do, it could just have done it better.
Call it a B+ rather than a A*

It's not bad at all, it's just not focused on your uses. It's an excellent rig with high end hardware. It's just that the money spent could have gotten more performance with a fair chunk of change left over.

If you're having second thoughts you can send back with no quibble. You have 14 days to change your mind without any pressure at all and PCS are great at handling such situations. If you do decide to go down this route seek some advice, you'll get a perfect build for your cash. The only difficulty may be queue times as you will no doubt be back to the start.

Intel were previously the king of the gaming hill, but AMD have taken over in the last few months with their 5000 series chips. Their technology is far ahead of Intel now and it's going to take a few years for Intel to get back to the races. The AMD chipset has a far brighter future ahead than any of the current Intel systems.

As said above though, even sticking with intel none of the X299 chips would be recommended as they are so old and power hungry. They don't perform as well as the mutli-core AMD offerings or as well for gaming as the lower end gaming chips (5600X).

Your system won't cause you any hassle, it's just more armoured car than Sports GT.

I would assume he’d keep his Strix allocation though surely? So probably only say... two weeks to rebuild the rest. 5800X sounds ideal for this build.

Thank you for taking the time to reply, I do really appreciate it, even if it's not the best news. They say you shouldn't ask a question if you are not prepared to hear the answer.

Out of interest, do you know what the best performing ASUS ROG mobo + intel chip is at the moment and also on the other side, if it was going to be AMD + mobo what would be the best recommendation for that too.

Thanks again for taking the time.

A 5950X is the best AMD chip, that balances HEAVY workload and gaming. Threadripper is for super heavy workload.
5800X and a Strix X570 would be more than suited to your build - plus the 5800X is in good stock. A 5900X is same in gaming and better in heavy workload, but is like £300 more and a long wait time also.

However it would not be an amendment at this point, it would be a cancellation and reorder - thus back to the end of the queue I believe

Though as said the build will be perfectly fine, maybe not as good as it could've been but it will still have no issues.

That would be nice, but I doubt it. It would take a kind hearted soul at PCS to make that happen I think. A return is simply that, a return. It won't be an exchange so it would be the end of that particular purchase/contract.

A new build would be a new transaction I would guess.

This is where you would land with AMD. You could opt for the 5900X but as suggested above, you'll net zero for gaming and it's a long wait along with the costs. Faster storage is an option with AMD so I went for what I consider the best.

Just something to add. You'll want a serious monitor for such a GPU regardless. It'll run 4K all day long, it would do a Super Ultrawide like the G9 some serious justice too.

Don't want to be spending all that hard earned on a system and not being able to make the most of it in the screen :)
