AMD RX 9000 Series GPU Reveals

So have done a test windows install just to run some benches

This is Firestrike on all defaults, it's saying hardware monitoring isn't enabled, not sure why

This is stronger than I was expecting, obviously this is purely raster performance but still, I didn't expect it to be this high.

This is bog standard default test at 1080p, no frame gen, no upscaling, no clocks or voltage adjustment, just 250 points off a 7900XT, reckon I can easily bridge that with a small overclock and undervolt.

I'll come back to this tomorrow, gonna call it a day.

Give me a day or two and I’ll let you know the 9070xt performance on a 5120x1440 monitor

5080 definitely has a bit more power, but it’s just insanely expensive and totally not worth it iMHO
Yeah this is all I keep hearing, even being told to just wait for the next generation of cards if I don't go for the 9070XT. lol.

I know your's is an 'invalid' result, so it's dodgy and shouldn't be used as a comparator, but here's your RX9070XT vs my RTX4090 (from today)...

I'm now the proud owner of an RX 9070 XT box. The GPU is inside (probably), so installing it is on the to do list for Sunday. Family birthday tomorrow and 6 Nations on Saturday will keep me busy until then!
Yay!!!

To whet your appetite and make the wait until Sunday even more difficult, @Ekans2011 just did a forestrike bench of his 12900h and RTX 3070ti mobile vs my 7800x3d and new 9070xt and mine almost doubled his score

It may be a mid range card but it’s still got some surprises!

Ill do some ray tracing and VR benches tonight and post them

Is the Sapphire Pure a good 9070XT, or would you go for a different one?
It’s a reference design, so standard power design up to 314w, but I have a reference design and it’s shaping up to be pretty impressive.

Depends if you’re into overclocking or not

Don't know why we're seeing random 'invalid' results due to hardware monitoring errors...as I'm just running one test after the other without changing any settings

So another test I was really interested in which no one has discussed yet is the VR performance

This was hitting 300fps in VRMark Orange Room and while it's nowhere near even a 2 year old mainstream gaming card, it's well over what's required for a good VR experience which is all I'm interested in.

Just span up Half Life Alyx and it looks incredible!!! This is first proper go on a headset other than the original HTC Vive, so it's going to be a significant step up, but I really was impressed. Got the settings adjusted to the full 120fps max on the headset.

The bonus with the PSVR2 over the original Vive is that you can far tighter dial in all major areas of the headset far more easily so you get a much better fit and therefore viewing experience aside from the fact it’s much higher resolution and OLED. I had major motion sickness issues on the vive but nothing like that so far on the PSVR2

And then the heavy load VR Test, Blue Room averaging over 145fps, still plenty for any VR experience

This is all in Windows, Linux is a different story, you have to run a modified unsupported Kernel, along with customising the Mesa install and then finally customising the AMD drivers. It's a bit of a kerfuffle and I haven't had any joy yet, I'm just going to wait for the kernel to support the new drivers natively.

So far I’ve played some Crysis Remastered and Horizon: Zero Dawn remastered, so not heavy cutting edge titles but both Ray Traced, and performance was really good on both at 5120 x 1440

I need to run Control next as that is still a bit of a Ray Tracing benchmark

The most recent game I currently own is Final Fantasy Vii Remake

I have come across 2 driver issues so far:

Crysis Remastered: Complaint that the driver was too old and therefor disabled full Ray Tracing, although there was definitely partial ray tracing as the water effects and light effects were definitely present. Hopefully this can be addressed with a future update

Half Life Alyx: complained of VRAM being maxed out, no way it was using 16GB, so expect the game is struggling to read the driver correctly and mis reporting. I don't think it impacted gameplay at all, so hopefully this is a simple bug that can be addressed.

But other than that no instability whatsoever, no driver crashes, no artefacts or anything untoward. AMD have been improving steadily since 5000 series, I think they've done a fantastic job.

I did try FSR4 upscaling on Horizon: Forbidden West and it's impressive, I couldn't tell any difference from native visually, ran really stable.

And it's the damn price, this card was half the price of an equivalent Nvidia card, and with the VRAM limitations on Nvidia, you really HAVE to go for the 5070ti as a bare minimum over 1440p if you actually want to be able to play modern games.

There's just no contest IMHO, I see absolutely no benefit going for Nvidia this time round save for the 5090 which is in a tier of it's own if you're willing to pay the price.

I’ll do the comparisons to my 4090 tomorrow. Don’t have any VR ones to hand because - strangely - I don’t do VR 😁

But in everything other than full RT, you can see what a bargain it is compared to a £1500 GPU from 2 years ago.

I was really surprised the Raster performance was so similar, even if that is a 2 year old card.
