X570 vs B550 Ryzen 5000, Thunderbolt

Hey All,

I currently have an order in which is Crosshair VIII Hero X570 mobo, 2 m.2 drives and a 8tb spinning platter drive. I'll be modifying to Ryzen 5900x on the 5th. Yes I am also a 3080 back order and likely a long way off getting one.

My new PC is multi-use, gaming, audio / DAW and some data science / ML.

One thing I am looking at is having a Thunderbolt header for and audio interface however the Crosshair doesn't have the header, the ASUS Tuf B550 Gaming Plus has the Thunderbolt header but I'm not sure whether I'm going to be hitting any chipset limitations with all the io and the new 5000 cpu. Would like the option to overclock but realistically I'm probably not going to bother so the B550 might be enough. Unfortunately the Tuf board doesn't have the greatest reviews either.

Alternatively I can stick with the Crosshair and go USB for the audio interface which has a small performance downside but might not be noticable in practice.

B550 or X570 or some other option?

You don't want to be going as low as the 550 for that level of chip...you want the Strix 570 as a minimum for the VRMs needed to keep the chip stable and performing higher
Makes sense, the issue is that neither of the x570 boards in the configurator have a Thunderbolt header.

You can upgrade the X570 (or any of the non Thunderbolt MBs with a free PCI 3.0 x 4 slot with an aftermarket card.

They seem to go from about £70 (for Asus/Gigabyte branded ones).
You can only do that if the motherboard has a thunderbolt header, which the X570 does not. Unless you have some links to suggest otherwise?

Plus thunderbolt add in cards are normally over £150 on their own

Ah bugger - thought it would be plug & play.

Will delete my other post now to avoid confusing the issue further 👍

That's my understanding too, ASRock do 1 or 2 X570 mobos with TB header but they're not listed by PCS.

Yes, PCS don't do any X570 boards with thunderbolt headers unfortunately. It's not something that was found in the original boards, it came later on.

Thunderbolt is a definite bonus for Audio, although of course you can still get plenty of audio interfaces that are USB based.

If you were wanting thunderbolt specifically with that combination of uses and wanting the 5900x / 3900x, you definitely need X570, B550 just won't cut it.

We are expecting a new chipset board (X670) possibly being announced in January at the virtual CES even to be released relatively soon after.

Until then though, it's a bit of a brick wall with PCS configurations at that level.

I have the X570 TUF board on my order. Should I swap to the Rog Strix instead? they are the same price.
Edit: No, the Rog Strix is more expensive, configurator fail, whats the issue with the X570 Tuf board?

Why do you want the x570? Have you not had advice on your build? I would definitely get advice.

Yeah we had a back and forth here: https://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/forums/threads/price-drop-when-zen-3-ryzen-releases.73223/
But somewhere along the changes it appears I've ended up with the X570 TUF board rather than the Rog Strix.
I'm hoping to add the 5900x CPU when it releases, the biggest difference I can see between the two boards are the Rog Strix is HDMI 2.0 whereas the TUF is 1.4 ? Not sure what other differences there are.

The first post on this thread seems to be stating you need/want a Rog Strix X570-F as a minimum and I'm curious as to why.

You’ll need the strix for that cpu. The VRMs aren’t capable enough on the b550 for the higher wattage parts.
