Wrong GPU running laptop, and nvidia control panel not working

That's because it's only using 1 GPU at a time, it auto switches between them so DXDiag will only show what's currently active.

Mine only shows the one also:

Thats mega weird dxdiag should display all gpu's. This is how mine displays:

@PerkyPeach this laptop can actually be forced to only use the Intel GPU in the BIOS and i am wondering if somehow thats what has happened.

Enter your BIOS by restarted and mashing F2 before it turns on. Then go to the advanced tab and scroll down to switchable graphics. Hit enter.

You should get the following screen (to get the list of different GPU options you need to hit enter on Display Mode) iGPU forces the PC to use the Intel GPU, dGPU forces the nvidia one and MsHybrid uses both intelligently for power saving. It should be on MsHybrid? If it is on MsHybrid switch it to dGPU so we can test the Nvidia card. If it is in iGPU switch it to MsHybrid.

When you exit make sure you save changes.

It was in MsHybrid so I changed it to dGPU.

@SpyderTracks I did do it in Sade mode yes, no luck.

After booting and chosing dGPU my laptop work but there are these weird pixely colored stripes all over the screen.

Now what? 😬

Now you call PCS your Nvidia card is dead mate. Those weird pixelly stripes are what is known as artifacting and 9 times out of ten they are caused by dead hardware.

Sorry mate.

Oh wow. What a bad experience. It said it was in testing before I got it, so that really puzzles me that they didnt find that out 😭

I have had this before on PCS laptops. It is mega disappointing and i know exactly how you feel trust me.
You would like to think it was working when they tested it and somehow the GPU died during transit these things do happen. I am sure PCS will investigate.

It may not necessarily be the GPU it could be the motherboard but like I said artifacting is indicative of a hardware fault.

I'm not at all sure how much testing PCS do. I know they soak test them for 24 hours to ensure they work and don't overheat. I very much suspect from posts on here that they don't test every port or feature, so it's entirely possible that the dGPU was never tested.

It would be useful I think for PCS to outline what testing they do carry out.

What GPUs are they Spyder? Could be a DX11 vs DX12 thing? It is odd it’s different out of interest, like you say could be CPU or maybe the motherboard.

The nvidia gpu is a GTX870m and another with a GTX1070

They're old school 4th gen i7's so fairly old by now. But yeah, if I activate the GPU and then run DXDiag it will show the nvidia card, otherwise it only shows the intel gpu.

I wonder if it's the difference between the newer MSHybrid vs the older Optimus.

I just tested it with my old defiance which has a 1050ti and that shows display 1 and 2 as well.

I appreciate this thread is going well off topic but it intrigues me.
