Is it possible to get Windows 7 Backup to understand I want drive C: backed up to drive G: and drive F: to drive H: ? It insists on putting C: and F: on drive G: and ignoring the H: drive altogether.

If its a full "System Image" you want then it will only do this from the drive where windows is installed (usually C) , even so you should be able to select the target drive to back up to when you initially set up the backup options , to select another drive to back up to just simply change the backup options to suit witch drive you want to to back up to.

The only time i have known it to "ignore" a drive is if there is not enough space for the backup or the partition / drive is not NTFS format.

I'm probably just not getting the configuration right, I think. There are two 2TB drives in the box, and two 2TB USB drives, and I really wanted it to backup drive C: to drive G: and drive F: to drive H: - but if it will be easier going back to the Chinese software from EaseUS, which did what I wanted, I'll just do that.

8 Terabytes. More than Bill Gates said would be enough...

You should be able back up your OS drive with the "create a system image" option to any internal or external hard drive you choose by opening backup and restore from control panel and selecting "create" a system image".You can also back up a second hard drive or more by going to "computer"/right click on the drive you want to backup/properties/tools/backup now, click on "change settings"/select the drive you want to install the backup on,ignore the warning "other people might be able to access your backup on this location"/click on "next",
you will then you'll be asked "What do you want to back up" you can either select "let windows choose" or "let me choose".It's always worked for me,well on windows7 anyway,
knowing windows though,it may not work for you for one reason or another.

My thanks for that! I hope it's possible to make both backups follow a schedule, as well. I know what you mean about things that work on one machine not working on another...

Now all I need to do is sort out a place for off-site backups. Or an ethernet over mains connection to a headless server in the garage... Just because I am paranoid, doesn't mean they aren't out to get me.

I can confirm the points vanthus has raised , i have used windows backup in all the situations he has detailed & have never had any issue with it - even on vista , i still use it to this day , a lot of people say its not very good , but its always been very good for me , its never failed me & got me out of some real scrapes.

It did malfunction one time where it would not do re-installs from the OS , but this most probably was a virus issue , i just used the boot disk for re-installs :)

Thanks to all of you! If what you have given me fails, I'll come back to this post. It sounds as if I will be fine with what you all have said. Cheers!
