So my score now is this:

around 350 points below my best score (https://www.3dmark.com/fs/25348489), but as I said, today I have an ambient temperature that is 7°C higher than on the day of that test, which ended up causing 5°C higher for the GPU average running Firestrike. Both GPU and CPU performance was a bit off.

At this point, not sure if the decrease in the score is related to temperature only or to W11 as well. Here is your task manager screenshot:

Thanks for this. It seems that there is nothing in Windows chewing CPU so the "it won't run on pre 8 series Intel CPUs (because they're too slow)" must be down to the UI management.

It would be interesting to see how hard dwm.exe works. :)

Any way to test that? Browsing around and doing daily stuff I've seen it wander between 0.4 to 4%. But when idle, it rests at zero with around 47Mb of RAM usage.

The only new thing that I've noticed on the task manager is this, but CPU usage is zero if I don't have the widgets bar opened:

I don't really know. I was just thinking back to the Vista days when you needed a decent CPU to run the (new) Aero features and wondering whether something similar was happening in Windows 11?

Really don't think so, it doesn't feel any heavier to me... but it could be that the new animations might be masking it a bit. The requirements are quite low for them to drop Zen1 and 7th gen Intel, it seems that MS is quite lost on this. Have a look below:

"Windows 11 is designed to be compatible with the apps you use. It has the fundamentals of >1GHz, 2-core processors, 4GB memory, and 64GB of storage, aligning with our minimum system requirements for Office and Microsoft Teams.

Using the principles above, we are confident that devices running on Intel 8th generation processors and AMD Zen 2 as well as Qualcomm 7 and 8 Series will meet our principles around security and reliability and minimum system requirements for Windows 11. As we release to Windows Insiders and partner with our OEMs, we will test to identify devices running on Intel 7th generation and AMD Zen 1 that may meet our principles. We’re committed to sharing updates with you on the results of our testing over time, as well as sharing additional technical blogs."
