Windows 10 install experiences

This isn't just an issue with Creative, most stand alone sound cards and a lot of brands of inbuilt sound cards are in the same position regardless of manufacturer, from what I hear it's Microsofts fault, they changed something about how sound works with Windows a matter of days before release without telling anyone and it left the sound card manufacturers behind.

Ah I didnt know that. Nice of them to do that lol I did think it was a bit odd from Creative since there has been several preview builds out. Daniel K had Creative version Windows 10 drivers working from February this year tbh, so Im not sure how he managed it; unless those were also broke recently with the official release. The one I dowloaded was an update from this month, but didn't mention any of the other builds not working with official release. Don't think they work with other sound cards unless they are Sound blaster based so unless you can find some other 3rd party ones Wozza yeh, id wait.

Just updated my brothers (now) ancient Clevo p180hm with Windows 10 and all works fine; even transferred over the drivers that power the touchpad volume controls etc it has on the chassis. Thought those would be an issue for sure. It didnt however install the latest Nvidia driver where as a later Clevo I updated did....weird. All works fine though, and no errors.

My vote was based on my nearly new PCS machine. That was the last of the four upgrades I've done since the 29th, and the smoothest -- it even managed to bring across the Win7 drivers for a peripheral that doesn't have drivers for 8.1, which was a nice surprise. The only one of the four that brought me close to considering going back was my 18-month-old Toshiba laptop. It's running well now (though a couple of things that never worked quite right under 8.1 still don't), but I had some issues a few days in with the system processes hogging resources after a few hours of uptime. I ended up disabling a lot of stuff, uninstalling most of the Store apps, and eventually doing a small registry hack to make it behave, but I somewhat suspect the issue was with one or more of the manufacturer driver updates that turned up after the upgrade, and it might have made more sense to try rolling those back.

Just got round to doing it on my machine, pretty much painless. Whole thing took less than 30 minutes, no driver issues at all and the only slight issue I have found is I lost my favourites that were pinned to the task bar but I'm sure i'll get over that . I'll reserve judgment on the new features like multiple desktops until I can get some real use out of them but I can only see most of them being helpful

I'm slightly surprised that the number of people who just pressed go and everything worked right out of the box us hovering in the high 50% range. I guess some of the 2nd category will be down to a couple of drivers not being available yet but that does seem like its going to cause problem for a lot of average users.

Multiple desktops come to live when triggered from keyboard (ctrl+win+left/right). It's not mind blowing feature but can be very useful indeed

Ive had problems with sound after playing a game if i watched a movie i had to re boot and vice versa also messed with my internet connection which would just hang till re boot, back to 7 now, i have just ordered a new comp from pc specialist with 10 on but i am having second thoughts about it i just hoping with it been a clean install it will work fingers crossed.

Don't always assume it's the OS that is the issue when you hear other people complaining about issues in Win10. Chances are, it's probably driver/software issues. A lot of people have installed Win10 on very old hardware, expecting it to work a 100% without any issues, which is unreasonable if you ask me. That is not Microsoft's fault. If you have bought a new PC within the past few days from PCS, that should support and work a 100% with Win10 Should there be any issues, PCS is always willing to help, while there's also a handful of experienced people here on the forum that is also willing to help out with technical issues.

I think you will find that there is a compatibility issue with Windows 10 and many Bluetooth connections and not just with PcSpecialist machine's.

Since my upgrade I have had problems getting my laptop to receive any file from my android devices yet the laptop can send files to them, and they in turn can send files to each other, just not to my laptop.

I have been on to the tech help from both Microsoft and the Android manufacturers (two different ones) who all seem to blame each other for the issue. In fact at one time I was on live chat to Microsoft Win 10 tech, Samsung tech and Huawei and all were blaming each other for the Bluetooth issues, however it transpired that one of the three then decided to blame Google for its Android operating system, and another one told me it was pcspecialist's problem and I needed to contact them.

At this point I gave up, copied all the transcription's from my online chats and sent it all to the press to see if I could get somebody to actually help solve the issue.

I even had the online tech help from Microsoft take remote control of my machine and do everything I had already told her I had done like reinstalling latest drivers etc, I asked her what she was doing when she asked for the exact model of my laptop, and she explained that she needed to ascertain the Bluetooth manufacturer so she could download the correct drivers, and I said well its right there in front of you on the device drivers page, at that point I realised that she was going to offer no new help.

I am afraid that all these so called tech helpers actually know no more than most of us, so maybe its a ploy by Microsoft that by issuing Windows 10 free we all now have to go out and buy new computers so they are fully compatible with Microsoft's operating system.

I have posted the question on the Windows 10 forum but have received no help from Microsoft experts??

Dunno about your BT issue, it seems like you have all angles covered. I moved away from using BT between my phone -> PC years ago, as It seems drivers has more or less always been a hassle. I use a small app called SyncMe to transfer files back and forth between my laptop and my android phone through WLAN. Do a clean install with AHCI + UEFI enabled.

I think Win 10 has introduced some additional security around receiving stuff via Bluetooth.

I can send files/photos between my phone and laptop but on my Win 10 laptop I have to right click the Bluetooth icon in the taskbar and select "Receive file" to allow the laptop to receive the file from my phone. Similarly I have to select the "Send file" option if I want to send a file back to my phone. Don't know if that is any help to you?

FWIW my experiences of Win 10 upgrade:

Have now upgraded 3 of the family PCs to Win 10. A Win 7 desktop and a Win 8.1 desktop (both running the Pro versions of Windows) plus the little 11.6" Gemini tablet hybrid (running Windows 8.1 Home ). Have kept the Vortex IV on Win 8.1 for the moment to use as a comparison/control for testing in case any further issues are identified.

I didn't do clean install's - just backed everything up and updated in situ. All went well with just a few niggles that now seem to be sorted.

The Gemini was the smoothest and the upgrade has made it so much better and easier to use in tablet/touch mode than it was under 8.1. It is suddenly more popular for browsing etc.!

The desktops both had problems with MS Outlook after upgrade (could receive emails but not send properly) both fixed by running sfc /scannow from the elevated command prompt.

The 8.1 desktop also runs some software that uses a USB dongle (Sentinel HASP) that wouldn't run after upgrade and gave an error message. Turned out the run time environment Service hadn't been started by default. Used Computer Management to find and start the relevant Service and all is now well.

The 8.1 desktop has a WD MyBook attached to a USB port for backing up. This "disappeared" after the upgrade but moving it to another USB port resolved the problem. When it reappeared it had a different drive number but a quick edit to the backup destination quickly sorted that.

We also encountered what was dubbed "sleepy mouse and keyboard" syndrome where the mouse pointer kept pausing occasionally and there would be a delay of a second or two between typing on the keyboard and the text appearing on the screen (sometimes with a character or two missing).

We use the Logitech wireless keyboard and mouse with the unified USB transmitter/receiver. Win 10 seems to switch the power saving mode on by default for all USB ports (even on a desktop!).

Unticking the box in device manager/properties that says "Allow computer to switch off to save power" seems to have solved the mouse problem but did not fully resolve the keyboard problem.

Further digging uncovered a "Check Keyboard Status" setting (search for keyboard in the settings search box). On the speed tab change the Repeat Delay to shortest you can and click OK. This seems to have resolved the keyboard problem now.

All in all it has been a relatively smooth upgrade process and (so far!) all family members like it, seem happy using it and are able to do what they want with it.

Hi and thanks for that Bishybarnybee, but if you mean click on the icon in the bottom box on my screen where the upwards arrow is and then click on the Bluetooth icon there is no option to 'receive file', in fact all the option that are there are greyed out except the one to 'show Bluetooth devices' and all that does is tell me what devices I am connected too.
When I try to send a file on the settings-Bluetooth page it shows the devices and the one that is sending comes up connected instead of paired.
In fact when I try to send a picture from any of my android devices I do not even get the box on my laptop come up with the option to receive the file as I did in Windows 8 and Windows 7.
I have now gone back to the old reliable way of sending and receiving files via a wired connection to each device.
I did try the program suggested by 'thisisevilevil' but that would not recognise my laptop when trying to connect it kept giving me the error message 'access denied' so have given up on that one too.

So i updated when it got officially rolled out and was working completely fine. My boot up times were even faster than on 8.1 but in the past few days the boot up times have been painfully slow. I've not personally installed anything but W10 itself has likely installed some updates. Any idea what could be casuing this? i haven't really had a chance to play around with it and see what'snew. It's probably installed or enabled extra services to the startup list, it's just odd it's been fine until just recently.

I didn't do a fresh install and it's running off an SSD.

Hey Tonlev. So the steps to make this work would be the following:
a) Make sure your mobile phone and laptop is connected to the same WLAN
b) Make sure your laptop has trusted your network and is configured as a "Home Network" as filesharing otherwise won't be possible
c) When configuring SyncMe on your phone, make sure you enter the IP address of your WLAN adapter on your laptop. You can find it by entering a cmd prompt -> type "ipconfig".
d) When asked for username/password in SyncMe provide it with the username/password you use to log in to Windows 10
e) Make sure your firewall is not blocking these connections

This should definitely work, even though you don't have any folders shared on your laptop, as you would be logging in as an admin. It's basically the same as using \\computername\c$ for instance, which is the default admin share configured in windows.

Anti-virus programs are well known for interfering with updates and upgrades. You might get away with simply turning off your anti-virus engine during the upgrade, but uninstalling it might be the only way.

What worries me about that, though, is leaving the pc unprotected during the upgrade. Is it possible to disable/uninstall the anti-virus and leave the firewall operating, or does that need to be disabled too?
