Hi,

Last night I had a minor problem with displaying files/folders in both my Documents and Pictures folders. I clicked on my Documents folder and the folder appeared to be empty, even though I hadn't deleted any files/folders and “This folder is empty” was not shown in the folder.

I restarted my PC using Start > Power > Restart and when I logged back I to my local account and checked my Documents folders all the folders appeared.

The only changes that I had made to my PC were software: I uninstalled my Geforce RTX 2070 Super drivers and updated them to the latest version on 1st October.

I have previously used DDU to uninstall them, but this time, I uninstalled each piece of Nvidia software via Control Panel and clicked Restart when prompted, I did this twice and then I did a Custom clean install to install them.

The Windows Updates installed on the 1st October were KB4577063 and KB2267602.

The Windows Updates installed on the 2nd October were KB2267602 and KB4576945

Sometimes I do change display resolution when running Steam.

Today 3rd October, all files/folders are present in the Documents folder and the folder icons appear in the Picture folder.

Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated, please.

Thank you.

Have you done a clean install since you’ve been having all these issues? It sounds like your windows is inherently messed up.

You might try opening an elevated command prompt or PowerShell session and enter the command sfc /scannow.

I have run sfc /scannow and there were no integrity violations.

It may just have been a glitch then. Make sure you have a good backup of your data and then just keep an eye on things.

In my opening post, I said that I updated the graphics card drivers the night before - 1st October, without usinh DDU. Just via Control Panel for each piece of software related to Nvidia.

Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated, please.

Thank you.

I don't think your GPU driver update is unrelated to your documents folder missing issue. The application error itself is unlikely to be related either, the exception code of 0xc0000005 is interesting however - that's an access violation exception which can be caused by a number of things, including malware.

I think I would run a couple of good anti virus scanners on your system - do a full scan with Windows Defender and also a full scan with Malwarebytes scanner.

I would also check whichever disk your documents folder is on - if it's an HDD run a chkdsk /x /r and if it's an SSD run a chkdsk /x /f - you'll have to reboot afterwards. Also use something like CrystalDiskInfo to examine the SMART data for that drive and see whether anything looks out of range.

Hi @ubuysa do you think that my GPU update is related to this glitch? You said "I don't think your GPU driver update is unrelated to your documents folder missing issue."

Should I reinstall my GPU driver?

How should I run the chkdsk commands that you mentioned, in Windows 10 or before boot at a command prompt?

Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated, please.

Thank you.

Sorry, that was a typo. I meant that I don't think your missing documents folder is related to your GPU driver update.

You can run chkdsk within Windows or via the installation disk. Either way you'll have to reboot Windows afterwards. :)

The Documents folder was not missing, the files/folders in this folder along with the Pictures folder was shown blank. Might this have been a dodgy Windows Update?

It's possible I suppose. If you have System Restore active then try restoring the latest updates.....
