Will the RTX 3090 be beaten?

Had my PC for about a year now, got a 2070 Super and it's running good! However, in a year or so when hopefully the shortages get...shorter...I'll be looking to sell the 2070 Super and upgrade to the 3090.
Now, my question is, is it looking likely for something better than the 3090 to be coming out within the next year, or is it quite unlikely for this? I don't want to end up purchasing a 3090 only for something far superior to then pop out of nowhere and have me twiddling my thumbs. Not really had chance to catch up with all the GPU news and updates so any insight would be helpful.

Thanks!

The 3080ti will be out shortly, that will be far better for gaming (the 3090 isn't a gaming card, so is fairly pointless for that).

But it all depends on what build you currently have and what monitor you're pairing it with? For something suitable for the 3080 or up, you'd need a £1000 monitor to make any use of it.

When I was planning on going for the 3090 I was planning on going for a 4K 120Hz monitor alongside it. I currently have a 1440p 165Hz monitor and a 4K 60Hz monitor so it's fine for now. Would my current 10700K be fine with a 3080Ti in terms of bottlenecking?

It's not the processor that's the issue, it's the case and PSU and general cooling ability of the build.

I wouldn't suggest 4k 120Hz unless it's a TV, you don't want a monitor of that refresh rate, the 120Hz ones are very early releases done before 144Hz becomes a standard, as such they're weak panels, and vastly outperformed by the far newer technology of today.

Will have to do some saving up for a 4K 144Hz then! 😅 I currently have the Lian-Li Lancool II, I'll definitely need an upgrade on the PSU so I'm thinking of maybe a 1000W PSU when I do the upgrade. Would you say the case needs upgrading too?

I don't know what your specs are? It's related to the full build, if you can just post them from the order page?

You'd definitely need a new PSU, it's not just the wattage that's relevant but the rating of it also, you'd need a minimum of an RMx range if you were going corsair which is a modular Gold rating.

You'd need a new case as well, something over about £150, but you need to obviously research and find one with good cooling.

The 3080ti is going to be a monster and will put out a lot of heat, pair that with the 10700k which is a volcano on it's own and you'll need extremely premium airflow rates going through the case.

Alright thanks for the info! Do you have any particular case you're a fan of, that could cope with the heat? I don't mind the price if it's definitely going to help out with the cooling

Generally any of the higher end corsair or Lian Li cases would be the ones I'd go for:

Lian Li O11 Dynamic (any variation of, they're all absolutely stellar)

Corsair Crystal 680x

Any of the Obsidian Range

iCue 5000x

What do you mean by that?
It’s a professionals card, video editing and rendering etc i believe - hence the VRAM being so high. Although i’m not sure they’ll let the 3080ti beat it, they very well could do and justify that their target audience are different people.

Exactly this. The reason it's so pricey is because of the VRAM more than anything, the only purpose for it is for big rendering projects so it can load massive resources into the VRAM to vastly improve rendering times. Completely wasted for gaming, unless you're talking 8k 60Hz in which case, yes, it would be worth it.

But at 4k, it's mostly pointless, the 3080ti is a far more suitable card and will likely perform around the same for significantly less money.

The 3090 is essentially the new nomenclature for the previous Titan cards.

I agree indeed, the only reason why you would go for a 3090 is to "skip" the queue for a 3080. (Like I'm doing and others did. Is it a wise choice? It depends: if you have the money and you don't care, that's good! It's a pure passion "pull the trigger" move, I wouldn't say my choice is necessarily wise, I do very little video editing and I wanted to skip the queue although you still need to wait. But I'm fine with it, I live with my demons I can't beat 😆).

With a 3080ti it would be a far better choice, but obviously we would need to understand when it will be released.

So again, if you're not in a rush, I would wait. :)

The 3080ti will be the card !the 3090 over the 3080 for gaming is a waste of money the performance increase is very little for the extra cost think I did some maths on this a while ago in the 3080 thread was somthing like £90 a frame for the 6-8 frames extra

Same here. Bought a 3090 to 'Skip' the 3080 queue. Put it this way. If the waiting list is still 4 months for a 3080 but I was able to get my 3090 in my PCS build in 3 weeks, well I can Crypto-mine the price difference between a 3080 and 3090 in that 4 months. Heck, at current mining profits I could nearly mine the entire cost of the 3090 in those 4 months...get to game on it from right now and end up with the top tier card of the 3000 series even if only by a few frames and even after the 3080ti launches months from now with a months long waiting list....remember my 3090 was effectively free because I was able to get one NOW and start Crypto-mining with it...NOW.... :D My 3090 will have paid for itself just in time before Proof of Stake hits Ethereum and likely causes mining profits to drop from current levels.

Lets hope proof of stake reduces the energy waste that comes from mining! https://www.vice.com/en/article/pkb...ATUEAwznlFmFvrszQfPVqIDCtdDfovAcI1S4lV_MpZ0CU
