Will Enabling Optane Memory Delete Everything?

Using the Intel Rapid Storage Technology it says all the files on the fast drive will be deleted if I enable optane memory. Does this mean I will lose everything?

Isnt optane memory basically early SSD cache drives?

I did wonder.... I remember having a 32GB one on one of my laptops, back when SSD was EXPENSIVE...

Can you take a screenshot / photo of the page you're on and the setting you're adjusting?

It does appear that configuring optane as an HDD cache will setup a RAID configuration with any attached HDD's, so yes, it would wipe all the drives in the configuration.

So yes, it would wipe the SSD partition of the H10 drive I believe from what is outlined in that thread.

It wouldn't affect your other drives, my apologies, they are completely separate, I was getting confused with the Intel M series optane which is a separate cache drive that pairs with a separate HDD or SSD in your system.

This is one unit with a 32Gb Optane partition and 1Tb NVME attached to it on the same device.

Sorry for any confusion, my bad.

I'm a little surprised that wasn't configured by PCS themselves during the configuration stage since you ordered with windows.

What are you intending to use that drive for BTW? Is there any particular reason you went for a hybrid drive rather than a standard NVME?

Not really a reason, more money than sense in this case probably, is it straightforward to reinstall everything from a backup if I enable it?

You’d have to take an image rather than a backup if you wanted to restore the whole OS and everything on it.

You can take an image with built in tools in windows:

You're the man Spydertracks, last quick thing, this won't affect the files on the HHD?
No, afaik this drive is completely independent to any others, the optane cache only offers pairing to the NVME partition of the same drive, it has no ability to manage other drives. It’s essentially just a modern hybrid drive. The Optane M series are a dedicated cache drives that can pair with additional HDD’s, those are the more common use of optane to speed up old HDDs where you still need huge disk sizes that an SSD can’t reach currently ie 10Tb and upwards.

The irony is that a standard gen 3 NVME drive would have been a lot quicker and far cheaper.

It’s always best to avoid any type of hybrid drive, they’re usually early releases before standard drives are mainstream, they’re never particularly good performers and are often quite unreliable.

So would I be better off with the system installed on the SSD?
No as it’s an old SATA SSD which are only really used for storage nowadays. NVME is an M2 format which is a different connector and about 10 times the speeds of a SATA SSD

If you wanted proper performance then I’d buy a Samsung 970 evo MVME and slot it in.
