What should i upgrade on this current pc build

This is my current PCSpecialist build from about 4/5 years ago that I collected from PCSpecialist near Huddersfield, I live in a town near them.

I'm looking at upgrading some of the components to make my life a bit easier in Video Editing (Power Director 365) and Gaming (Avid Elite Dangerous player and Microsft Flight Simulater).

Quite happy with 1440p resolution not particularly bothered about going to 4K, my current home video's look stunning in 1080p and 1440p due to my Panasonic 3xCmos Video Camera.

I am a retired IT Sales Consultant, 74 years young and in good health except for type 2 Diabetes, so cost is important.

I'm thinking of upgrading the CPU and the GPU but without breaking the bank!

I will be replacing my drives though, taking the Windows 11 Pro, Boot Drive to the Samsung 990 Pro 2Tb M.2 Drive and the Data Drive to the Samsung 990 Pro 4Tb Drive (when available and price drops) and removing the Samsung 860 Evo Drives completely.

If the 5800X3D is an option, it's a great choice with MSFS in mind. It performs exceedingly well. With the GPU, it's just whatever you want to put into it really. The PSU you have is borderline for the higher end offerings but I would be OK with a 4070Ti in it personally.

With the drives, I can't really understand the reasoning that you have with the choices. I would personally opt for a 500gb Windows drive, to make sure you keep everything out of it and to run optimally, anything more than that is wasteful IMO.

A good strong second drive is a great shout, but I would keep the other drives in play as well as they are excellent drives for the uses you currently have. The 970s could be sold/moved on.

If you did opt for the 5800X3D in the system, you would need a better cooler. Anything in the corsair lineup with a minimum of 240mm would cover you nicely.

Thanks, I have a similar thought process going on for an upgrade, but not sure on 5950x via 5800x3D, 4070ti looks good but if prices start dropping on GPU's I probably may go for the 4090 series, if there is a series.

The reason for the 2Tb Boot drive is so that I can partition the drive 1 partition for the O/S and 2 partition for Drivers, O/S related Software, Games and other things that may be needed or used by my O/S, The 4Tb Data drive will be for all Movies, Music, and Important stuff etc

If you wanted the 4090 you would need to upgrade the PSU as well. The bare minimum would be 1000w IMO, but for me I would want 1200w for such a level of card. It would cover another upgrade down the line if you wanted also.

With the 5950X vs the 5800X3D, the 5800X3D would be significantly better for gaming.... especially with FS2020 (and the upcoming 2024). The 5950X would be a bit faster with encoding certain video streams, but with the upgraded GPU a lot of the grunt would fall on the GPU over the CPU. I don't think I would have the 5950X over the 5800X3D with your uses. The 5800 is a significant upgrade over the 3600X no matter which way you slice it, I think the 5950X would be overkill where the CPU is used most, but under-performing where gaming is concerned.

With regards to the storage I would not partition at all. Partitioning is fine for organisation, if simply having folders isn't good enough, there's no benefit other than organisation and there's a real hit on performance. I wrote a little blurb on storage a little while back that kind of covers some of what you are looking at. I would strongly advise a drive just for the OS and nothing else. The remaining drives can then be sliced up however you wish. I would consider having FS2020 on one of the SATA drives that you currently have completely on its own.

Thanks for that, I will not partition the 2Tb Boot Drive but just create folders as you suggest, old habit.
PSU I too am thinking to get a 1200w PSU to replace my 750w.
What would you suggest as a cooler for the Ryzen 9 7950X3D or similar? Currently using the Corsair H60 2018 Hydro Series.

Starting to look as though I may need to pay a lot more than I initially thought!

Thanks for your advice and suggestions.

The recommendation was not to have a 2tb boot drive, but to use a small one and use folders on the second drive. Just for clarity for anyone else viewing, I don't want anyone thinking this is what was recommended.

For the 7950X3D, are you aware that you will need a motherboard & RAM as well?

I think by the point you are getting to you would be far better selling your current system and starting from scratch. Everything is going to be replaced other than the case anyway :)
