What is the noise and thermal throttling like on the new Recoil VII with 4080/4090, ahd how do these graphics cards compare in PCS build benchmarks?

I'm looking at picking up a new recoil VII with a geforce 4080 (or 4090) - but have a few questions and concerns

1. How noisy is it? Fan noise in particular. Are there any videos showing this laptop under load?
1a. and how much difference does the liquid cooler addon make?

2. How much of a difference is there between the 4080 and 4090? I've seen average is around 20% faster, but PCS build has same power usage by both cards, are there any benchmarks showing the relative results for PCS builds?

3. How hot will it get under load, and at what point does it throttle performance due to temp?
3a. and how much difference does the liquid cooler addon make?

4. How is the build quality of this chassis? I've seen mention that older tongfangs were sub-par, but new ones are better - would be great to hear more info on this latest version.

Looking forwards to any info here - Feels like this laptop could be a replacement for my aging Defiance-II and 1080-ti tower, but will be good to make sure my expectations match reality.

None of us work for PCS and the chassis are brand new (posted last week) so I don't believe anyone has one yet to be able to comment, you may want to give PCS a call to discuss.

Will do!
Checking my post history, seems you gave me the same advice about issues with my old laptop back in 2017!
I never did post a follow up, but things worked out ~OK.
Thanks, will try to post more info this time

Welcome back :)

I think the chassis went on sale around tuesday / wednesday last week, so I imagine we may start seeing some reviews come in certainly by the end of next week hopefully, and hopefully we can get some benchmark scores on the leaderboard to work out actual performance.

From what I've seen so far, the 13th Gen Intels are actually far more efficient than previous generations which is brilliant to see, but I know almost nothing about the 4000 series GPU's

I’ve ordered Recoil 17.3” with RTX 4080 and can’t wait to see it!

I’ve done big research about RTX 4000 before marking a move.
I was considering 4070 or 4080, as 4090 if far above budget. However differences in performance between those two is huge.
Basically 4070 isnt better than 3070Ti at all, only improvement is noticeable when DLSS 3 and Frame Generation is ON.
4080 however make big difference. Cost almost £400 more, but hey, you need to spend £2k for Recoil with 4070 anyway.

So I decided if I’m spending that money I’ll go with 4080, which has almost 40% more Pixel Shaders ( 7424 vs 4608 ) and 4GB memory more.

Would love a review when you get it and if you feel like, run some benchmarks and post your scores:

Hi - looking at exactly the same spec just now (4080 build is out of stock atm so it's giving me a bit of time to really dig into my decision.). Annoyingly for exactly the same build only a few weeks apart it's quoting me nearly £100 more. Times we live in, I guess!

I can't see any mention of Tonfang chassis in any of the config info - I probably can't see it for looking at it though. Unless perhaps PCS have just started using their own brand?

I was reading through the forum mentions of the Recoil (various generations) and someone mentioned it was a double-brick power supply. Does anyone know that that's still the case? I'm aware it's a desktop replacement.

And has anyone seen ANY reviews of the Recoil VII (is that the same gen as the 17.3" Recoil available in Feb/March 2023? Again, can't see mention of 'VII' anywhere.)

Never bought from PCS before and couldn't find anything re this precise spec - so you're my life ring, friend! :D

Also ordered the same spec - although with an extra drive to run Zorin for dev work.

Due to being so new, it's a struggle to find any real info, but the chassis seems to be this one from Tongfang:

This is my 5th laptop from PCS, so no doubt it will be ugly, fast and hot - but ultimately pretty solid - if my previous experiences continues! So don't panic - they are usually decent builds. I've recommended to a few other people in the past and they have all been pleased too. I don;t hesitate to press "go" with PCS these days. :)

It states which chassis on the quotation at the bottom.
Interestingly, it doesn't say it on my quote or my order confirmation. Which is why I went looking for it to confirm which has (or can support) the specs I ordered. I was worried I would end up with an old version of the chassis.

Ah - OK - if I replicate the order as a new quotation and THEN post to forum.

But of course, that would be a new quotation and not the one I actually ordered.

It's not the quotation that shows it, like you quoted above, it's when you click the "post to forum" link and get that particular quote. When the OP posted they did so this way, in your previous reply it looks like a copy and paste from the screen just before the "Post to forum" one.

Unsure why that information is solely available on the post to forum link, but at least there's a way to get it :)

I know you probably think I am being thick - but the first one I posted IS from the post to forum output. Of the order.
The original quote is now expired and so I only have my order. That does not show the chassis manufacturer/model in the post to forum output. I know it _usually_ does - but for my order - it really does not... look:

Only works from quotes.

Hi,
I'm looking at similar specs and am really interested in the heat and noise so any update would be great.
Was also looking at the Alienware (x16 R2) with a similar build and their vapor cooling but that takes me nearer £4k as a spend so not a preferred option.
My current laptop is an old PCS build with a GTX 970M so is @6 years old which unfortunately, now runs very hot and noisy.

I know it's probably overkill as my gaming is predominately World of Tanks and, I'm not so interested in the water cooling as i do use it as a laptop - it's on my laps sat on the sofa in front of the TV :)

So i will watch this thread in anticipation

Have you given your old pcs build (Defiance II ? ) a clean out?
make sure to ground yourself first, check some videos online about laptop cleaning if not familar with the process.
I ended up cleaning down between the heatsink fins in the laptops exhaust, got the thing running much quieter and happier!
Careful not to leave dust on one side of a fan, making it noisy and wear fast.

FWIW - I ended up getting and returning a Recoil VII for a partial refund - had endless unsolvable crashing issues, and a replacement machine had no sound output. Hopefully I was just unlucky, but would personally not be willing to try this model of laptop again.

To more directly answer your question - the recoil VII is a bit noiser and hotter than my old defiance 2 (Heat is mostly a function of power supply, and it's max is nearly double, but noise is only a little more)

Thank you.
I have had it apart a few times to clean and it was actually relatively dust free. It has gotten so hot that my keys in some instances (especially the Z and X keys) are not as responsive so i have had to just remap my keys for gameplay.

I appreciate that any laptop will run hot through power requirements and load but assumed a newer more powerful option would possibly have less demand for my requirements :)

It's concerning that you had issues with your build.
