Compared to WoW? Who the blazes told you that?!

Google it :)

Its a now very old, very dated MMORPG that I tried a while back and nearly punched the screen :D I know long time players still love it (for some reason), but I cannot see a way a new player could start now, with all the modern games out there...I swear the original XCOM games look better (not all about shiny gfx, etcetc...but still)...oh and its incredibly tedious and grindy (like all good game back then were)

Yep, very dated and a grindfest. Good for the time, but hasnt really kept up with the times. Played this damn game for 4yrs but would not recommend people to start playing it now.

I played for about 6 years. Good game at the time, but it's changed so much since i last went on. Also, £6 a month to play as a member? no thankyou!

I've played Runescape since release, still play now. It can be a serious grindfest at times, but it's generaly enjoyable most of the time. I currently have a level 133, one of many high level character i've made over the years. The graphics arn't the best but it's not all about graphics.. FF7 isn't considered one of the best rpg games of all time becuase of its graphics.

Also, it cannot be compared to WoW in any way, apart from it's in the same genre. I personally prefer runescape to WoW (I have a level 80 character) for a few reasons, Wow is an MMO but it's very linear progression through the game put me off a little, for example, needing to be a certain level to progress to a new area or the monster would destroy you wich felt very restricting. On Runescape, you can go anywhere and do anything you please.. there are over 30 skills to train, none of wich are restricted by not being a certain charcter level to access, so you can play the game exactly the way you want to and customise your character to suit your way of playing.

Also, some of the posts stating that you shouldn't start as a new player are total rubbish, it's a very accessable game to new players with a nice easy learning curve.

A largely enjoyable game wich i'd reccomend trying. It's not for everyone though, but personally i love it.

A very good game in its day (people love or hate it). I used to play it with friends when it was in its prime between 05 - 07. I still log in once in a while.

Point Of Interest: The original creator (Andrew Gower) left in 2010 and sold his remaining shares to an American investment company called IVP (Insight Venture Partners) who now own a 55% majority share of the company.

Ever since it's become all about the $$$ and the game's original rules have been thrown out of the window. Real life wealth can now determine success in game which was never the case before, as you can basically buy your way to the top via a spinning wheel that randomly rewards EXP lamps. Given that the game's average audience is well under 18 this is extemely unethical and (I hope) a lawsuit waiting to happen. No doubt they've found some loophole but it's very shady and IT IS gambling, no matter what they say. Encouraging 13 year olds to gamble up to £300 a day on virtual items is not a good idea, nor is a very lax form of security check on credit cards when buying (going to be alot of very angry parents when they next check their bank statements methinks).

Check their official forums for more info, the game is currently in complete turmoil. I'm not a member anymore and haven't been for ages but if I was I would have cancelled and I would urge you not to start playing on principle.

It's a damn shame that Jagex (until now a well respected and very successful game developer in the UK) are no longer in control of their own creation, but being bossed by the shareholders in the US.

More info on this:

An interesting read, sums the situation up nicely - http://wizzley.com/horing-jagex/

Old Rules - "We don’t want players to be able to buy their way to success in Runescape. If we let players start doing this, it devalues Runescape for others. We feel your status in real-life shouldn’t affect your ability to be successful in Runescape."

Apparently this rule no longer applies. They broke their own rule (and deleted and reworded it).

Also a recent entry to the T&Cs stating that they're not responsible if purchases are made without the account holders permission. So if your account is hacked or a parent's child makes a purchase, they claim this is now non-refundable. Is that even legal? Wouldn't trust them with my card details anymore!

I agree with Tom, back in it's day it was a great game. Recently, it's changed drastically. Personally, i'd lost interest in the game a while ago, but like Tom, i log on from time to time to chat to old friends that still play, and it's actually tricky to remember how to do simple things such as getting money out the bank/money pouch as it's now called haha.

It's become to profit orientated such as stated in that article above :)

All very true but most players don't give a damn what's going on in the back ground, and yes there is new money hungry owners, but that doesn't affect in anyway how i play the game.. and if people want to waste their money buying virtual gold that's upto them.. it happens in every single MMO out there. But it doesn't affect how i play the game. So, everything you have said is pretty much irrelivent because it has zero impact on my game experiance.

Fair enough. But it seems to me like a massive amount of players are bothered by it. At least the more vocal ones.

It might not affect your gameplay experience but it does make the highscores completely irrelevant. Plus IVP have a history of taking over games, milking them dry and running them into the ground. Might not be a game left... one of the reasons I don't sink alot of time into online MMORPGs anymore, if they vanish you have nothing left to show for it.

They can milk all they want, it's not uncommon for a company to make filthy amounts of money from games. Blizzard for example have 12 million Wow subscribers paying £8.99 a month.. That's the equivelent profits of a hollywood blockbuster every month. But people don't moan about it. So why do you?

Like CoD, they have probably lost a lot of their original fans so they will just try to appeal to the younger ones who can fork out for games on their parents cards, thats basically what CoD is doing, I think both have realised they are a sinking ship so might as well milk it as much as they can

Because one is a subscription that every player pays and are all on an equal footing.

The other gives people willing to pay more money a greater advantage.

There is a massive different between the two.

Saying all this, I still do not see how any new player could get into Runescape now (ignoring the issues listed by Tom etc), with all that the world of gaming now has to offer. Baffles me that :)

There are much better free games out there now, BF Play 4 Free, NFS World, War Inc Battlezone

just to name a few of the many that are out there

I have to disagree.. the quality of MMO's out there is pretty dire.. 99% are blatant WoW clones, Aion, Guild wars, Rift.. i have played them all.. they are just blatant Wow clones. Once you have played one, you have played them all. Runescape is a totaly diffrent experience.. and becuase it is so diffrent, that is the exact reason for all the hate (evident in this thread). It's an MMO that's nothing like Wow = instanly a bad MMO (in the eyes of a wow nerd atleast) And again because it is so diffrent, that is why i have stuck to it for nearly 10 years.

Even if the RuneScape game engine worked properly - which it doesn't at the moment - I wouldn't start a new RS account unless I used a computer which can't handle anything modern or just wanted to know what a basic MMORPG is.

I don't know if you know, but at the moment their game is having real FPS issues. I have a 7850, which should obliterate the graphics on it.. yet i only get 15 on high? haha

Well people do moan about WoW, but I digress, don't take my comments personally, or think for a minute I'm just out to bash the game cause I'm not. Didn't I already say I used to enjoy playing it? I just feel the future of the game is in big trouble if they carry on the way they are now. It won't be the totally different experience you describe if they do.

And yeah the current frame rates are really bad, I guess Java can only cope with so much lol.

This probably has something to do with your AMD card.. you should probably upgrade to Nvidia :)
