What have you bought in the sales so far?

The thing I wonder is... steam selling a game like Bioshock Infinite for £7.99... Yeah steam are taking £7.99 of our money, but surely Steam had to pay more than £7.99 for the code from 2K? How do steam make money out of selling games at such low prices? Or do publishers literally sell their codes to retailers for a pittance?

If nobody is buying a game then reducing the fee to like 75% off is going to cause mass-purchasing which means more income than if the game was full price.

Could be a number of things. Steam could buy keys in bulk for a pittance, wouldn't be too out of the question as it's all digital so no need for transport, packaging, etc. Or they might have had the majority of purchases for a game during the release period and need to find a way to get rid of keys that aren't being bought. Or some other dark magic I don't understand :)

I personally think they get them for a pittance. If you think PC DVD games on release sell for like £30, that includes all the packaging, transport, retail stores, staffs wages, profit for everybody involved. Basically a lot of stuff that's in addition to the actual game. Take all that away and there's probably not a lot left that goes into the game. And like I said, once a game has released most people who are going to buy it will have bought it for full price, then there'll be a big dip in sales which can be lifted by these super sales. Cheap purchases are better than no purchases at the end of the day!

From reading interviews with Indie devs Steam takes a percentage of the sale of each game. I'm guessing this percentage would change depending on who the developer is as I'm sure the big companies have more bargaining power. Sales gain less money for Steam per game but there is a much higher volume of games sold.

I'm just looking through my steam collection and I haven't paid more than £10 for any of them (it includes things like Tomb Raider, all the bioshocks, Half Lives, first two Batmans, Crysis 2, Dark Souls, Dishonored, Skyrim, Far Cry 3, all GTAs, Max Payne 3, Portal 2, Witcher 2, X-Com). Presumably there are people out there who actually pay full price for things and make Steam some money?!

The only thing I'll happily part with full payment for is GTAV if/when it gets released as on PC it will be awesome I think... let's just hope they don't have auto aiming as an option.

Literally every game I had on my wishlist has been on the daily deals or a flash sale. Bit of a result! :D

Damn these sales forcing me to buy more games that I'll barely get a chance to play! I got Far Cry 3, Brutal Legend and Rage (was curious about the mega texture gubbins) on Steam, then Crysis 3 and Fifa 13 on Origin. Oh and I gifted Dishonoured to my cousin; love that game.
