The thing I wonder is... steam selling a game like Bioshock Infinite for £7.99... Yeah steam are taking £7.99 of our money, but surely Steam had to pay more than £7.99 for the code from 2K? How do steam make money out of selling games at such low prices? Or do publishers literally sell their codes to retailers for a pittance?
If nobody is buying a game then reducing the fee to like 75% off is going to cause mass-purchasing which means more income than if the game was full price.
Could be a number of things. Steam could buy keys in bulk for a pittance, wouldn't be too out of the question as it's all digital so no need for transport, packaging, etc. Or they might have had the majority of purchases for a game during the release period and need to find a way to get rid of keys that aren't being bought. Or some other dark magic I don't understand
I personally think they get them for a pittance. If you think PC DVD games on release sell for like £30, that includes all the packaging, transport, retail stores, staffs wages, profit for everybody involved. Basically a lot of stuff that's in addition to the actual game. Take all that away and there's probably not a lot left that goes into the game. And like I said, once a game has released most people who are going to buy it will have bought it for full price, then there'll be a big dip in sales which can be lifted by these super sales. Cheap purchases are better than no purchases at the end of the day!
