We were all in that position, it takes time to learn (over 50 years in my case) and, as Spock says; "for everything there is a first time".
I'm not guaranteeing that changing the battery will help, but in a 4-year old laptop it's the first place to start. Take careful note of the battery polarity before you remove the old one - photograph it to be sure. DO NOT touch the new battery with your bare fingers, the acids on your skin can damage the battery. Us a paper towel or clean handkerchief to hold the new battery whilst you insert it.
