We had something similar to this on my girlfriend's computer the other day. It was called something like "Antivirus 2011" that looked identical to windows defender and claimed to have found 54 viruses on her computer.
This virus also stopped access to all programs on the computer including firefox. I removed the virus by accessing command prompt upon boot up then disabling and deleting all the files and registries.
Awful, awful scam.

That sucks man. I was buying a phone online and as I had to return the one I wanted around 4 times in one week from 3 diff retailers as they were all duds my mum and dad BOTH had to cancel cards as Natwest thought something fishy was happening as there was a ton of large purchases. We were out of £50 but that was coz their P&P is stingy..

dear me have you been diddling about in the internet again. My mum says there's lots of unsavaoury business washing about. Stay away from those naughty warez sites say's she, even if your girlfriend/wife does want a free copy of MS Word :)

The bank account which your money went to HAS to be owned by someone.

They need to be found and someone needs to break their necks.

I had this exact virus about 4 months ago, it somehow got through what I thought was a tight internet security setup. It only took me about 3 minutes to get rid of it, though.

The program stops you using task manager etc & from running your malware programs. However you can either run in safe mode or just run in normal mode & as soon as your windows screen appears, hit windows+R & go into msconfig, then you'll see it in the startup selection. Untick that, then run your malware/virus scanners & it'll get rid of it. I seem to remember the bugger's name in startup was a bunch of random letters.

The wife nearly fell for something like this a couple of weeks ago. Thought she had a nasty virii. I heard her mumbling in the kitchen...say "Hmm, I need to pay for this software" and ran into the kitchen screaming "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1111111111111111"

Paha! Man I had that image in my head and just burst out laughing. Most women and computers do not go well together I find.

On the serious side it is a scary thought how easy these things can happen. Next minute you lose a great amount of money you just can't simply afford in this day and age.

Little bit sexist there. Actually I find that women can often be a lot better on computers, especially things like programming / testing where it requires a lot more patience. The best coder I know is a woman.
