Vyper 17.3" FIRST IMPRESSIONS

So what can I say...

Firstly I ordered the Laptop with Windows to install myself... Windows was already installed with minimal bloatware, very happy and surprised by that. The activation may have occured when pairing my Microsoft account.

Secondly. Wow. The box was light, thought the actual laptop had been stolen 😂 its amazingly light, and contains super powerful hardware.

At first I heard of thermal throttling possibly being an issue in a chasis this thin and light... It performs just as a thicker laptop would. Don't worry.

The CPU gets to 95-96 degrees celcius under load in Turbo, which is what would be expected of a laptop this thin. Tested the laptop with Cinebench, running the software in Turbo and Office mode multiple times to get a consistant result... Well, the pictured result is from office mode, just iver 4000 which is Ryzen 9 4800hs territory and im sure office mode lowers the wattage from Turbo mode, unsure if same wattage as the ryzen chip. Having the laptop set to Turbo mode gives a 4200 result. When compared to my Desktop with a 5820k six core processor, I see around a 40% CPU performance increase! I was expecting around 20% due to being a mobile part albeit newer. Saw some benchmarks of the 9750h which is a 6 core 12 threaded part and well, that performed similar to the 5820k, so thats where my expectations came from. Very impressed.

The screen feels bigger than my previous 17.3" laptop, due to the thinner bezels, feels great, looks great, even brighter than my monitor. No dead pixels on arrival either. The screen is IPS, and looks amazing.

The graphics card is an RTX 2070 non super. The super will only gain you around 5fps in games hence why the normal card was chosen. Only played one game so far, Quake 2 RTX, and the framerate seems to be in line with the Desktop 2060, possibly a slight bit faster. That's good, as with RTX turned off, it performs around that of the GTX 1080 in my desktop.

The only complaint I have is a tiny almost unnoticeable scuff on the chasis as pictured, possibly from transport or the factory, but it doesnt bother me too much.

I have not tested the battery life yet but will do so in a follow up post within the next month.

So far very happy with this laptop.

Nice, thanks for posting. The Windows system that comes if you order is without an OS was put there only so that PCS could test it. There is no guarantee that it's complete or fully configured. We always advise installing your own copy of Windows if you order without an OS so that you know exactly what you have. :)

Would you be able to post a picture with the bottom of the laptop and one with the keyboard a better one.. then the ones on the pcspecialist listing are not so great

Unfortunately no enter key on the numpad and the shift key on left side is smaller then the original viper picture from pcspecialist post.

Do you feel like the Defiance model has the same keyboard layout ?

To be honest, i'm unsure, however the defiance should have lower level of performance due to the slimmer form factor and max-q graphics. By looking at the images of the defiance it seems be a similar keyboard layout. Cant entitely tell though.

The Defiance has a full keyboard with "end", "-", "+" and "Enter" on the numpad side.

That's a shame about the small shift key on the Vyper keyboard. The Max-17 which is the same chassis from Tongfang sold by Eluktronics in the US does has the full size shift key, so presumably if you order the US keyboard with the Vyper it may have the larger shift key.

Are there any major differences between a US and UK keyboard? Apart from the US not having the £ symbol.

Yes, speaking as an American currently living in the UK, there are a number of differences. The quotation mark, @ symbol, and a bunch of other keys are different. It definitely takes some getting used to....
