Hi there. Could you answer a few questions to help us?

What’s the budget for the system?

What VR are you using and what monitor do you have? The make and model or resolution and refresh rate would be handy info to have.

Any other uses for the system other than Flight Sim? Streaming, editing etc?

I’m issuing a formal warning for getting in there and doing the spec before me 🤨

The 3090 is likely to net you only a few extra FPS, it’s a big outlay for minimal performance gains. The added VRAM would not add much benefit in VR as the panels on the headset wouldn’t be able to show the improvement in textures.

As for the CPU, I reckon the 5900X should be more than sufficient. If you’re set on the 5950X, just bear in mind you’ll really want the Crosshair VIII for your motherboard. I’ll quote our resident Flight Sim enthusiast mod @Scott here...

FS2020 only uses one thread heavily at the moment but that should change with DX12 (everyone is praying for that to be the case). Even then, 6 cores should be amazing. If streaming then the extra couple of cores on the 5800X could be relevant but, again, they aren't necessary thanks to the hardware Nvenc codec on the Nvidia cards (hardware streaming). If using other streaming platforms I don't know how easily they can tap in but I'm sure it's straight forward.

I’ve tagged Scott in as he also knows his stuff when it comes to VR, it’ll be worth waiting to hear his take on things 🙂👍

Either of the specs above have you more than covered. The 5900X is the best choice for FS2020 IMO, as it should manage the highest clocks over a sustained period.

The 3090 won't offer much at all IMO. You're not going to get the best FPS regardless of which GPU you choose and opting for £500 more for around 5fps (yes, around £100 per fps) isn't the best idea.

The builds above are exactly what I'm aiming for this year and I'm a HUGE VR & FS2020 fan/user.

We love you Ukraine
The HP Reverb 2 is a superb headset also, excellent choice. A lot of people don’t realise it was designed in partnership with valve who make the Index.

The Reverb is essentially a more modern index which the motion tracking on the headset itself rather than the older method of separate satellites for the index.

Superb headset!

Can I ask a quick question? Because FS2020 takes such a long time to load would there be any benefit to putting windows 10 on the SSD and FS2020 on an M2 drive?

In both of the builds above the plan is for Windows to go on the 980 M2 drive and FS2020 to go on the Firecuda M2 drive (along with any other games). Both drives are lightening quick and will help with the load times of FS2020. There are no conventional SSD drives mentioned in the above configs.

Absolutely, if you went with one of the specs we put together for you, you'd just have your OS and programs on the 500GB Samsung 980, and then use the 2TB Firecuda to store your games. MSFS20 is only going to get bigger so having a big fat fast drive for it will be a boon!

EDIT - @Scott has slightly quicker typing fingers than me this morning....

Finally questions I promise:
1. RAM 2 x 16GB OR 4 x 8GB RAM is there a slight difference in performance?
2. Do you go for a HDD instead of an SDD on cost grounds only, or are there any other reasons?

Thanks

There have been some problems with some configurations of 4*8, so best to stay 2*16
video & general file storage doesn't need the high speed of SDD, which is really a piggy in the middle format these days
