Vortex II 17 - poor performance

Hi All,

I'm the proud owner of a new Vortex II 17, comprising of an i7-2630MQ CPU, a Radeon 6970M GFX card, 8GB of memory and a Seagate Momentus XT hard disk.

I've now started to install some games and do some benchmarks, but seem to consistently post much smaller figures than other. For example:

Passmark – total score 754.8, with CPU at 3106, compared to 6293 on the cpubenchmark.net.

3DMarks 06 results in 7500, whereas comparable systems are posting 14k+

Dirt2 benchmark reported 43 avg frames per second, compared to 50+ on a similar notebook on notebookcheck.net.

GFX Driver versions are off the Clevo disk, I think 8.8.10.

Any ideas?

Hi Devize,

Good points there. I wasn't connected to the mains at the point of doing the tests, etc. I'll have a look at the power options this evening and do another set of tests on mains.

I'll also update the drivers as you suggested. Has anyone else got a similar configuration on the Vortex that I can compare to?

Cheers

Paul

I have exactly the same Spec as you apart from i'm using a Scorpio Black instead of the Seagate HDD. Only got it Monday so have been diving in playing games instead of doing any benchmark testing but I can have a stab at it later maybe so you have a comparison. PM me with what your using and how your doing it and i'll do the same tests.

Hopefully with the Drivers updated, High Performance setting enabled in power options and on the mains you'll see a difference.

Hello again,

I installed the new drivers and changed the power settings to Performance and hey presto, now running 3DMarks 06 at 17,500.

Cheers for the help

Glad you got me started I was getting worried reading your post as I literally ordered a near identical machine 2 days (except with 80GB SSD+500GB Scorpio Black) just need to remember and update my drivers when it arrives, cheers! :smartass:

Glad its looking good now. The 6970m is a beast. Out of curiosity whats your temps? I idle at 43 and not exceeded 77 playing games at ultra settings 1080p which I think is a good indication of how well its been pasted + the case design in disipating heat.

I'll check the temps tonight, but the fans certainly push plenty of the heat out the back of the laptop. Fans are slightly noisier than I would have liked but can't complain based on the performance! :D

45' at idle, but then its quite warm today so there's a higher ambient temperature. That's with a 30% fan according to GPU-Z.

Very happy now that I've sorted the power saving options anyway.
