Video editing PC, how is this spec?

Hi All, I am looking for a video editing PC, I have a newly bought gopro 10 which records in 4/5k and I like making family videos as a hobby and wanting a decent video editing pc. I haven’t decided whether I want to use adobe premiere or sony vegas software.

So this is the spec I have built. My budget was £2000 but I have got carried away and also included a 4k monitor . I do like to have something decent. I would appreciate if someone/experts comment on my chosen spec and advise.

thanks in advance

Theres a few immediate things I would highlight,
The 11th gen intel were not particularly great, in a lot of cases the previous gen actually outperformed them, so I would consider changing that.
The cooler choosen isnt going to be enough, you need a decent cooler for intel chips, especially higher spec ones and there were issues with the PCS liquid coolers (not very reliable, that may have changed) i'd point at a H115i model as a minimum for that level of CPU
PSU needs to be higher, to give proper headroom on power but also for future upgrade potential. I understand its not aimed at gaming but would still look more towards 850W as a minimum, pref 1000W if taking a 3070Ti...got some questions about that as well in terms of how it fits into your uses and budget.
Id also change some of the storage options. I get the bulk storage but im curious over the other two chosen
The motherboard wont be enough for the CPU you have chosen.
I would opt for faster RAM.

If editing in 4K then the 4K monitor makes sense, but a 4K editing machine would likely be after a bigger starting budget (or one that doesnt include a monitor at 2K)

As this is hobby, I would suggest aiming at 1440p to get a decent machine that can do what you want it to, i'm also feeling you want to game on it as well from the drive choices?

Are you able to include the reconfiguring link? It would of been at the bottom of the page you copied across above.

Thanks so much for your response. Here is the link

the graphics card was preselected, I have no idea about that.

with regards to the storage, basically my only reason for all this storage is to ensure I have enough storage and yes I have most likely got carried away. I prefer the Ssd drives and just decided to include another non ssd.

please feel free to change the motherboard/ram, all this was preselected.

i do really want to edit in 4k, so would like to stick to that, isn’t this pc spec powerful enough for that?

I am not really into gaming to be honest. But would prefer the spec for gaming just incase.

Are you saying the storage is too much for budget purposes or performance?

please feel free adjust everything you stated and reply.

many thanks

A 4K video editing machine, including 4K monitor, isnt realistically going to come in on a £2K budget.
Not without some heavy concessions.

Having a 1440p setup wouldnt stop you from working in 4K, it just wont display it but you would be able to then play it on a 4K screen at 4K still. Even at £2K, when you include a monitor, it still makes it a tricky build.

Some of the parts youve put, like 64GB RAM, would be hinting more towards professional level as well, yet you say this is hobby stuff because youve got a new camera...its a very heavy spend to push for 4K based solely on that.

I would say build a competent 1440p setup, it will allow you to still work with 4K raw footage but if you're going to be using the system to do some gaming and other multimedia, I think its a far more realistic approach for a £2K budget.

If you are doing storage with the pure aim of editing, a 500GB M2 OS drive and then mass storage HDD and maybe a scratch drive would be more appropriate, video doesnt benefit from the faster speeds you get with SSD/M2 SSD unlike the operating system.
If you wanna throw in a games drive just for the option, I wouldnt go for 2TB or for such a premium model if its on an off-chance
You need to think about where you are targetting your budget.

I would look at sourcing your monitor seperately to get a wider choice and most likely better value/price and I would very, very strongly suggest a 1440p monitor, IPS display would be more suited if main use is video editing and that in itself will cost more.

Would also look at using an external DVD writer rather than a case that will add more just due to limited options on having a bay for it.

Thanks, sorry I mentioned my budget was initially 2000 but the specs i built are actually 3100. Monitor was for around 270 i think.

i wasn’t planning on recording footage on the drive where the operating system is.

so based on that would you suggest any changes, my budget is revised to 3k

can you suggest which motherboard I should have and faster ram?

thanks

Just as a warning, if you went with what you spec'd, youd have performance issues with the motherboard chosen and would likely end up frying components with any real use...it is -very- unbalanced and some pairings literally arent fit for purpose.

3K makes a huge diffference...
Perhaps something like this? Leaves £500/£550 in the tank for a 1440p IPS monitor (youd still need to shop around for a good one/price), still has the flex of being able to have games on the second M2 drive (the intel one) but you can also configure your editing software to use that intel drive as a scratch drive, bulk storage with eh HDD and a decent PSU that you would be able to make use of if you upgrade the GPU's over time.

The build should also have good bones to then upgrade etc and should last you a long long time.
See iof you can get any of the proper guys to have a look at it, I would imagine there are going to be some improvements that can be made, but it should give you a rough starting point to work from. It was @Scott who I remember giving me most the info that helped guide my choices when I wanted to incorporate video editing on my build.

I would imagine theres an Intel CPU/platform choice as well that might actually be more up to date but the 5900X should be -very- good at the job.

BTW the AOC Agon AG271QG 27" is a very good monitor, not cheap, but IPS (its quite an old model now though...bound to be better choices if bought seperately through places like amazon etc).

Hits a really nice sweet spot for gaming and also editing with an IPS screen and 165Hz refresh/1440p but would strongly advise shopping around for options.

Thanks I will look into the specs, my only question is why do you recommend a 1448 monitor instead of a 4k? Is it purely costwise? I am happy to increase my budget to another couple of hundred pounds if that is the case,

Aza

Rising Star
You would be able to edit and work with 4K on that system, in terms of having the power to do it just monitor would display 1440p, you could easily hook the system up to a 4K tv and watch it on 4K@60Hz.

To upgrade to a good 4K monitor, it wouldnt be another couple of hundred, youd are possibly talking about a higher spec GPU to run the monitor as well, especially if 144Hz to allow for the gaming side (the 1000W PSU would allow for that though if you upgraded later). You tend to work with 30fps for video though, maybe 60fps... more than that it has a weird quality to it and seems a bit unnatural.

For a good 4K monitor with IPS screen, and a possible GPU spec increase to run the screen, wouldnt be surprised if it added a further £500/£1000 to the cost. But again, wait for some of the experts to have a look im only a novice at this stuff. They may well be able to pull a rabbit out the hat.

Plus Samsung G7 4K 144Hz IPS at £585 would be £3200...
And still possibly some bits that can be trimmed/altered with the spec, so I might be well off on the price expectation...

So the processor selected is better/powerful than the intel ones? and is this multicore? Adobe premiere recommends that if using their editing software.

Would you recommend and decent speakers upto £150 please

Just for some clarity, is this purely for video editing? No gaming at all?

If it's purely for video editing you could shave a bit off of the system itself and push the budget into the monitor. With video editing you ideally want to have good colour reproduction, so the refresh isn't so important. IPS would be a must for me with an editing monitor.

If you want to have it all, you probably could. But it would be around £3500 I would imagine, including the monitor.

Feed back with the full needs of the system and I can have a little spin at it if need be. I would say that I think everything is covered to what we know so far already though.

Thanks for the reply. This is purely for video editing and on a hobby basis but I do like to try to buy the best within my budget which is pretty good for a hobby pastime!

However I would still like to ensure it is game proof. I bought a pc in 2010 spent £2000 ensure it was game proof and not once I have played yet lol

However contradicting the above can you please reconfigure based on video editing only and see what you get for me for £3500. That would be my max. Being a video editing setup only - I would still consider it as I probably would never play games on it.

Monitor wise I don’t think I will be that fussed being a top spec because after production I will be able to play the video on my 4k TV. What I do like is the PC to be maxed out with power and features. I will most likely use Adobe premiere also.

Many thanks

High end hobbyist with gaming below. Pretty much the above system with a couple of tweaks. No need for 64GB of RAM as that would be professional level. As a hobbyist myself I get away with 16GB but I would personally want 32GB in a system nowadays.

I've also prettified the system overall.

Something like the G7 would be a good pairing. It covers gaming and it has a nice IPS display to replicate your TV etc:

Total cost £3292, but you may want to factor in £200 for a second 1080p/1440p monitor to go alongside your primary. I wouldn't work without, at least, dual screen nowadays.
