Very Low 3DMark11 (4300) score for GTX 680M

Hello All

I purchased Vortex 15" Laptop with below config from PCspecialist about 2 years ago. At the time when I purchased the laptop, I ran 3DMark11 score in performance preset and I got a normal score of around 6000. But now when I run 3DMar11 again, I get a score of around 4300. http://www.3dmark.com/3dm11/8207689

I tried re-installing the graphics drives, even tried running the laptop in high performance mode, but I ended up getting the same low score every time. Laptop was connected to power source the whole time when I ran the tests. I am unable to understand what the problem is. Can anyone please advice? I am really going crazy here. Also, the reason I ran 3DMark11 was because Batman Arkham Origins was running ridiculously. I installed the game about 3 months ago and played it for about 2 hours and left it at that. It ran fine at a custom preset back them. But the same game when I tried to run now was giving me very low fps (not measured).

My laptop config is as below

Chassis & Display Vortex Series: 15.6" Glossy Full HD LED Widescreen (1920x1080)
Processor (CPU) Intel® Core™i7 Quad Core Mobile Processor i7-3610QM (2.30GHz) 6MB
Memory (RAM) 8GB SAMSUNG 1600MHz SODIMM DDR3 MEMORY (2 x 4GB)
Graphics: NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 680M - 4.0GB DDR5 Video RAM - DirectX® 11
Memory - Hard Disk 500GB SEAGATE MOMENTUS XT HYBRID, SATA 3 Gb/s, (7200rpm)**SPECIAL**

Hello Rangs,

Sorry im an AMD user so im note sure how much help this will be but do you use a program called Nvida Experience at all?

Also have you updated the drivers at all recently? Between then and now?

Nvida Experience is software that will look at your drivers and your games and optimist your settings for you for the best possible gaming experience that your rig can handle.

Might be worth a try.

If not hopefully a Nvidia Guru will respond soon.

Hope this helps though

Mike

Hi Mike,

Thanks for the response. Updated the latest non-Beta drivers only a few hours ago (uninstalled the previous driver completely and installed the latest driver). Same 3DMark11 score (around 4300) before and after driver update. I ran the tests with and without nvidia experience - the results were the same!!

And yes, I have updated the drivers many a times between then (when Batman AO ran fine) and now.

I notice on the link of your 3dmark score, it says virus and other nasties may be chilling out in your system. So it's probably worth doing a virus scan - if you aint already that is.

Hi, I already have Bitdefender Internet Security on it. Also, I have re-installed the OS now to make sure that this has nothing to do with the OS. And I am starting to feel that this is related to the hardware! I ran 3dmark11 after re-installing the OS and FPS for each test looks exactly the same. I forgot to take backup of the wifi lan drivers before formatting the hard drive. So unable to connect to Internet to get the score at the moment. I will get my drivers DVD and install lan drivers tomorrow. But something tells me, I am & *@#ed!!!

Yeah. Batman AO used to work properly at a custom preset. But that changed suddenly. I started getting unplayable frame rates. To test the problem, I re-installed assassin's creed 3 and tested fps at everything maxed out. I got an avg of 10fps using fraps. I am sure I was getting more than that in AC3. and evidently, batman was definitely working fine 3 months ago.

After a complete OS reinstall, the new score improved only slightly. http://www.3dmark.com/3dm11/8210112
One perplexing part is - 3DMark11 score page reports the memory bus clock as 900, whereas it should be 1800. For other correct scores, the memory bus clock is correctly reported as 1800. Is this something to worry about? Can temparatue actually affect the graphics card performance? I noticed that the processor temp hit 95 C mark yesterday for the first time. Room temp was close to 40C yesterday!!! Guya, any inputs please. Really going crazy here!!!!

Your temperatures seem fine, I have the Vortex 2, and under heavy load (BF4) it sits at about mid 90s so i wouldn't worry about that, if it hits over 100 then start to panic.

Can you run a game and then tab out of it too look at your system monitor to see if anything looks like it is drawing a lot of resources other than the game itself.

Is Batman the only game that's acting up?

Assassin's creed 3 gives 10fps with everything maxed out. I am sure it used to give around 15-20. So games seem to be impacted correspondingly. Also, i ran 3dmark11 three more times, and the scores keep dropping every time. The last run gave 4100 score. I will hang myself and give this laptop to my enemy

You have all the setting maxed out?

Its unlikely that card will run assassins creed or batman maxed out and run smooth.

What i would recommend is to drop the game down to lowest settings or medium setting and work your way up until you get a balance between performance and quality and see how you get on with that.

Have you cleaned the machine lately? I usually clean it out once a month and actually take out the heat syncs because the dust that collects in them is mental, i do live in a dusty house mind you. Never get laminated flooring :)

Check this out.

It wasn't really running smoothly with everything maxed out. I just remember running fraps with ac3 long time ago. I had maxed everything out and I got around 15-20 fps, which was simply unplayable. But now I am getting fraps score of 10fps. I have never ever cleaned it as such. I will today. Thanks.

I will try and benchmark some other games today

I did check that site before. Over there the average fps for AC3 is 30+ in Ultra settings. I am getting 33% of it. But I never really got 30+ on Ultra setting even when the laptop was working fine. But something has really gone wrong with the laptop. When I turn it off for a few hours and then turn on and run 3DMark11, it shows a score of around 5000. Successive runs start showing lower scores. Drop of around 400 points in every run. (5000,4600,4200,3800). Do PCS tecnical team visit these forums?? I wonder if they have even come accross something like this. I wish I could send this to PCS for a checkup, but I relocated to India because of work opportunities :-( sob sob.

Are these temps even remotely normal?? I ran 3Dmark11 4 times and I got these temps. Laptop chassis temp reached 97C in 15 mins with even running any stress tests!!!

Yeah for a stress test that temperature seems fine, think anything above 100 i would start to panic, think the threshold is 102 if i remember correctly.

I wasn't really stress testing! All I did was turn on the laptop and run 3dmark11 3 times. Let me run prime95 now. Will keep the laptop close to the wall that separates my house from the neighbors. If this thing blows open, well.. I always hated them...
