Very infrequent PCS computer boot problem

Hi,

Over the past few months, I have had the same problem with my PCS computer.

When I turn on the computer the BIOS POST and then 2 beeps doesn't not occur, meaning the PCS logo doesn't not appear and I have a blank screen.

There is no activity from the M.2 SSD drive or the activity light. If I press the 'reset' button on the front of the PC, it boots normally.

This is very infrequent, but has occurred 3 to 4 times now, including earlier tonight.

The full PCS spec is below.

Open it up and remove the M.2 drive, then replace it again ensuring it's properly seated, don't do the locking screw up too tight either.

Whilst you're in there, pop out the RAM cards and re-seat them securely too. Do the same with the graphics card and any other PCIe cards in there as well.

Do ensure that you either wear an ESD wrist strap or that you ground yourself some other way.

Hi,

If thinking of using an ESD wrist strap, are there any particular brands to buy or suppliers - which are genuine and reputable?

Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated please.

Thank you.

No, not really. You might even be able to get by having the PC plugged in but switched off. If you ensure that you're touching the metal case you'll be fairly well grounded.

If you're the type of person who often feels a small spark when touching metal surfaces definitely get an ESD strap. All it does is keep you connected to earth and stops any static build up in your hand.

Amazon have several.

As above, my trick is to leave the PC plugged in but switched off at the mains. This grounds everything. Touch the case before you start and you'll be fine :)

Hi,

The room my PC is in is carpeted and the computer is placed on the carpeted floor.

What would be okay in this instance?

Thank you.

Sure. You are more likely to pick up static on the carpet but it will be discharged as soon as you touch the case as long as it's plugged in (and off).

Hi,

I have been looking on Amazon at differnt ESD wrist straps and I am thinking of buying these, which are a 2 pack.

Would these be okay or are there better ones to buy?

Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated, please.

Thank you.

They will be fine. You don't really need two but having a spare is no bad thing. :)

Hi,

Sorry for not giving an earlier update, but I haven't managed to look at my PC yet.

The ESD wrist strap only arrived today. I ordered it 7 days ago from Amazon.

I have an AMI BIOS and I also have occasionally heard 1 long + 3 short beeps before the PCS logo is displayed and then PC continues to boot normally.

The other few times that I have previously mentioned when there is a blank screen, there are no beeps at all. Not even the single initial BIOS POST beep, when the power button on the front of the PC is pressed.

It's odd but the PC has been booting okay over the last few days, except for tonight – 1 long beep + 3 short beeps and the PC has continued to boot normally without needing me to press the reset button first. This has been exactly the same when this has previously occurred.

Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated, please.

Thank you.

Pop out the graphics card and RAM sticks as already suggested. That's what you bought the ESD strap for isn't it?

Hi,

A quick update.

I have checked the on-board Q LEDs when I last booted the PC. All of the Q LEDs light up and go out one after the other.

The one that stays on is the white one.

Should I check anything else other than the graphics card itself?

Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated, please.

Thank you.

Well, the white LED indicates that there is a problem with the graphics card...I doubt it's drivers as the LEDs light before Windows loads. If you've popped the graphics card outchecked all the connections etc are secure, then I'd contact PCS. They may have other thoughts on this (hopefully others on here too) and, if agreed that it's a faulty card, they may be able to send a new one out

Hi,

Before the look at the graphics card.

I have also had a problem when I update the graphics card drivers. I normally install the latest one without uninstalling the old one first.

Once the new drivers have been installed the Windows 10 Start menu doesn't respond. To get this back to normal, I have reset the PC.

Could this related to the other problem with the graphics card?

Thank you.

Yes, it most certainly could be related. What you describe here calls into question the stability of your Windows system and before getting PCS involved with potential hardware issues you need to be certain that you have a stable operating system. The Windows Reset feature is pretty much worthless in situations like this, you need a clean reinstall from bootable media to be sure that you have perfect copies of the various libraries.

I would download a new copy of Windows 10 2004 and do a fully clean install (deleting existing system partitions) allowing Windows Update to install all drivers - finally download and install the latest Nvidia driver from their website.

Then check for boot issues before you make any other changes to the software platform or config.

Hi,

Once Windows 10 has been done as a clean install - should I download any motherboard drivers for audio, etc?

Thank you.

No. Once Windows is installed run Windows Update repeatedly until no more updates are found. This will install all drivers. The only one you might want to manually install is the graphics driver, these change so often that the Windows libraries might not have the latest version.

It's wise to cable connect to your router when you do the install and run Windows Update, just in case Windows out of the box can't drive your wireless card fully.

Should I delete all of these so my m.2 SSD is blank when I do a clean install of Windows 10?

Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated, please.
