I must say I am very pleased with the Ionica 16" laptop. Tests with Passmark, Timespy and Firestrike have shown the performance to be on a par with median results for my hardware and nothing was giving poor results.
However, my old Vortex III is over 10 years old and I am unfamiliar with modern connectivity and hardware and there is some confusion. The configurator says the Ionica has 1xThunderbolt 4 port + 3xUSB 3.2 ports whereas the detailed specification states it has 1x Thunderbolt 4 port, 1xUSB 3.2 Gen 2 port(type-C), 2xUSB 3.2 Gen 2 ports. The latter is correct and by the time I plug in a wireless mouse, that leaves just one useable USB port.
At this point I buy the docking hub (only one choice).
I plugged in the dock and tried a 1TB touro, 2TB Toshiba and 4TB Seagate USB drives. All the drives lit up as though active but did not work or show in 'This PC'. They did show in Settings/Bluetooth & Devices/ Devices but an unknown USB device (Port reset failed) occurs with driver error. Mains powered devices such as printers and externally powered backup drives do work. So do my old HDD drives in external caddies but some are a bit 'iffy' in the hub and due for retirement in any case. USB sticks seem to work even though they are not mains powered. The HDMI does not work in the hub.
Various combinations were tried but it was eventually found that the error occurs just by plugging in the hub on its own.
So...... with the hub removed and rebooting, there is no sign of the hub or an error in Settings/ Bluetooth and Devices/ Devices/ Other devices. I plug in the hub and get 'Realtek USB GbE Family Controller' in other devices. After about a minute I get a further entry in other devices of 'Unknown USB Device (Port Reset Failed) Driver error. In Device Manager this device is shown in Universal Serial Bus controllers as located at port_#0016 Hub_#0002 with 'Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43). A USB port reset request failed.
OOOOHH....... The docking hub is stated to be USB-C and that is what I have plugged into on the back of the laptop. However, if I plug into the side of the laptop EVERYTHING WORKS but this is the thunderbolt 4 socket. Problem solved you might think but, no, I do not want a hub and other hardware hanging on a 6 inch cable by the side of my laptop. I want an extension cable out of the back of the laptop going to where movement of the laptop will not be restricted.
SO...... What do I need to do to check the connectivity of the USB-C so that it works.
